Food allergy with monovalent sensitivity to poultry meat.

BACKGROUND: Allergy to poultry meat is only rarely covered in science. The few reports are usually related to patients allergic to eggs or bird feathers. OBJECTIVE: Two patients with a clear history of monovalent, ingestive allergy to chicken and turkey meat, without other food allergies, were analysed. The relevant allergens were to be identified by immunoblotting. METHODS: Both patients were evaluated with skin tests and specific IgE determination (CAP). Allergens were identified by SDS-PAGE and immunoblotting. Cross-reactivity of chicken and turkey meat was examined by IgE inhibition expe…

A survey of parasitic infections in Psittaciformes and Passeriformes in Mashhad, Iran.

The health, growth and fertility of avian species can be negatively affected by parasite infection. This survey assesses the presence, variety and distribution of internal and external parasites among parrots and perching birds in Mashhad, Iran. This study examined 751 caged pet birds from different species and regions in Mashhad for faecal samples and 132 oral swabs for digestive tract parasites. Furthermore, skin scrapings were conducted on 14 canaries displaying dishevelled feathers. During the study, mortalities and moribund birds that had been referred underwent necropsies to examine inte…

IFN-γ, IL-21, and IL-10 co-expression in evolving autoimmune vitiligo lesions of Smyth line chickens.

The Smyth line (SL) of chicken is an excellent animal model for human autoimmune vitiligo. In SL vitiligo (SLV), postnatal loss of melanocytes in feathers appears to be due to cell-mediated immunity. In this study, leukocyte infiltration and associated expression (RNA) of immune function-related cytokines in growing feathers were investigated throughout SLV development and progression. Both leukocyte infiltration and cytokine expression levels started to increase near visible SLV onset (early SLV), reached peak levels during active SLV, and decreased to near pre-vitiligo levels after complete …

Is Allopreening a Stimulus-Driven Defense Against Ectoparasites?

Allopreening occurs when 1 bird preens another bird. The behavior is normally directed at the head and neck of the recipient, i.e., regions that the bird cannot self-preen. Studies of penguins, pigeons, and other groups of birds suggest that allopreening plays a role in the control of ectoparasites, such as ticks and feather lice. However, it is not known whether allopreening increases in response to increases in parasite load, or whether it is a programmed response that occurs independently of parasite load. We conducted a laboratory experiment using wild-caught rock pigeons (Columba livia) t

Automatic bridge crack detections: A lightweight segmentation model for UAV inspection.

Bridge cracks are among the primary factors affecting structural safety and durability. Intelligent and precise detection and quantification of cracks are important in improving bridge operation and maintenance efficiency and safety assessment. Traditional manual detection methods are inefficient and highly subjective, while existing deep learning methods still have shortcomings in terms of computational overhead and detailed modelling. Therefore, this study proposes a high-precision and lightweight crack semantic segmentation network-Feather SFASwinUnet. The model introduces two new modules:

Farm Environmental Enrichments Improve the Welfare of Layer Chicks and Pullets: A Comprehensive Review.

Currently, cage housing is regarded as a global mainstream production system for laying hens. However, limited living space and confinement of birds in cages cause welfare and health problems, such as feather pecking, osteoporosis, obesity, and premature aging. Many studies have been conducted to alleviate layer welfare problems by providing farm environmental enrichments such as litter, sand, alfalfa bales, chick papers, pecking stones, pecking strings, perches, slopes, elevated platforms, aviaries and outdoor access with a trend towards complex enrichments. The provision of appropriate enric

Ultrastructural visualization of cross-linked protein features in epidermal appendages.

Upon vigorous extraction with ionic detergent under reducing conditions, the macroscopic structures of mammalian hair, bird feather and horny teeth of the hagfish become swollen and flexible but were substantially preserved. In each case, removal in this way of solubilizable constituents, such as disulfide-bonded keratins and associated matrix proteins, left a residue of epsilon-(gamma-glutamyl)lysine cross-linked protein. Residual features in hair included cell envelopes in the cortex, cell envelopes and intracellular deposits in the medulla, and nearly the entire cuticle cells. In feather, e

Leverage of lysozyme dietary supplementation on gut health, hematological, antioxidant, and immune parameters in different plumage-colors Japanese quails.

The current study was conducted on two different feather-colored Japanese quail varieties (brown and white) to examine the impact of lysozyme (LZ) dietary supplementation on growth performance, hematological profile, serum lysozyme, phagocytic and antioxidant activities, along with the gut status and the relative expression of some antioxidant- and immune-related genes. Two forms of LZ; extracted from egg white (natural LZ (NLZ)), and the commercial LZ (CLZ) were included in this experiment. For each quail variety, 240 birds were randomly allocated into four groups with four replicates per gro

Expression profile of MUC1 protein in Pigeon allergens positive asthmatic.

BACKGROUND: Certain urban areas could contain many pigeon's allergens, which may play an imperative role in the exacerbation of asthma in pigeon allergen sensitive asthma patients. The circulating form of MUC1 in human serum has been considered as a biomarker for some allergic diseases. The study aimed to investigate the role of MUC1 in pigeon allergens positive asthma patients. METHODS: We were enrolled 200 asthma patients including 81 males and 119 females. After positive pigeon exposure history, 108 patients underwent SPT testing against pigeon allergens (dropping and feather). A total of

Ruminal, intestinal, and total digestibilities of nutrients in cows fed diets high in fat and undegradable protein.

To study relationships of high undegradable intake protein and dietary fat on intestinal AA supply, the ruminal, intestinal, and total digestibilities of diets with or without added fat (5% of DM) and animal protein (blood meal: hydrolyzed feather meal, 1:1; 8% of DM) were examined with four cows in a 2 x 2 factorial design in a 4 x 4 Latin square experiment. Ruminal degradabilities were 14.9 and 18.6%, and intestinal digestibilities were 98.9 and 68.3%, respectively, for CP in blood meal and feather meal. Treatment effects on ruminal digestibilities were small. Protein supplementation increas

Sampling method influences Salmonella detection and quantification in pre-harvest commercial broiler production.

Effective pre-harvest Salmonella monitoring in broilers relies on accurate, reliable, and reproducible evaluation of pre-harvest Salmonella. In this study, six sampling methods were evaluated and compared to assess Salmonella prevalence and quantification during broiler production across three iterative experiments. In experiment one, bootsocks, electrostatic pad-rollers, feather swabs, cloacal swabs, fecal grabs, and litter grabs were collected from 24 houses across 10 farms (n = 288 samples). In the second experiment, bootsocks, bootsock-rollers, and feather swabs were collected in 16 houses

Anatomy, development and regeneration of zebrafish elasmoid scales.

Vertebrate skin appendages - particularly avian feathers and mammalian hairs, glands and teeth - are perennially useful systems for investigating fundamental mechanisms of development. The most common type of skin appendage in teleost fishes is the elasmoid scale, yet this structure has received much less attention than the skin appendages of tetrapods. Elasmoid scales are thin, overlapping plates of partially mineralized extracellular matrices, deposited in the skin in a hexagonal pattern by a specialized population of dermal cells in cooperation with the overlying epidermis. Recent years hav…

Chronic noise exposure has context-dependent effects on stress physiology in nestling Tree Swallows (Tachycineta bicolor).

Anthropogenic noise is increasing in intensity and scope, resulting in changes to acoustic landscapes and largely negative effects on a range of species. In birds, noise can mask acoustic signals used in a variety of communication systems, including parent-offspring communication. As a result, nestling birds raised in noise may have challenges soliciting food from parents and avoiding detection by predators. Given that passerine nestlings are confined to a nest and therefore cannot escape these challenges, noise may also act as a chronic stressor during their development. Here, we raised Tree

The Effect of Short-term Classical Music stimulus on Behavior and Tonic Immobility Reaction of Pullets.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of short-term stimulation of classical music on the behavior of pullets and to explore whether classical music as an auditory enrichment factor reduces the fear level in pullets. One hundred and twenty 10-weeks'old Roman white pullets were randomly divided into two treatments of which one group was exposed to classic music (M), and another one was the control group (N). The music was played during 8:00-18:00 every day for 7 consecutive days. The behavior of the focal animals was observed from 11:00 to13:00 every day for 7 days. The result

A Physiologically Based Oiling Model (PBOM) to Predict Thermoregulatory Response in Birds.

When birds are exposed to oil, their ability to thermoregulate is impaired as a result of damage to the insulative properties of their feathers. If an oiled bird is unable to maintain thermal homeostasis, hypothermia and death can follow rapidly. Physiological responses to oiling depend on several variables including environmental conditions (e.g., ambient air and water temperatures), life history of bird species (e.g., body size and habitat selection), and foraging strategies (e.g., divers, surface feeders, shorebirds). The most widely used approach to assess the effect of spilled oil on bird…

[Anaphylaxis due to chicken meat].

Acute anaphylaxis due to chicken meat is very rare; only a few cases have been reported in the literature. We report the case of a 13-year-old girl, with a past history of allergic urticaria due to eggs, who presented immediately after ingestion of lightly grilled chicken meat with facial edema, dysphonia, acute dyspnoea and a feeling of suffocation. A few months later, the patient developed asthma in the vicinity of poultry and after contact with chicken feathers.

The syrinx.

Birds contribute prominently to the terrestrial soundscapes on Earth. The sounds can arise from different sources, such as drumming by woodpeckers, bill clapping by storks or feather vibrations in the courtship flights of snipes and hummingbirds. However, most avian sounds are generated in the avian vocal organ, the syrinx. Vocal behavior is used in many different contexts and features prominently in mate choice and reproduction. It is therefore thought to have played an important role in the remarkable diversification of birds.

Tyrosinase and acid phosphatase activities in melanocytes from avian albinos.

Two forms of cutaneous albinism in the chicken were investigated for the presence and distribution of tyrosinase and acid phosphatase in melanocytes in situ and in culture. In sex-linked recessive tyrosinase-positive albinism, sal, melanocytes in regenerating feathers and neural tube-derived cultures contained morphologically normal and abnormal premelanosomes. Tyrosinase was localized primarily to the abnormal premelanosomes and probably not to the normal ones. The cells possessed, in addition, vacuoles with membranous inclusions, located in the dendrites, and capped by dopa-positive vesicles…
