OBJECTIVE: To investigate the impact of different feeding methods on the manifestation of novel coronavirus infection symptoms in newborns following maternal infection with the novel coronavirus.
RESULTS: Among the 257 mother-infant pairs, participants were categorized into three groups according to feeding method: the direct breastfeeding group (n = 125), the bottle-feeding with expressed breast milk group (n = 87), and the artificial feeding group (n = 45). No statistically significant differences were observed in the maternal clinical manifestations of COVID-19 across the three groups (p >…

The recognition of the importance of the enteral route for (hyper) alimentation led us to develop three methods for enteral placement of feeding tubes using endoscopic techniques. With these three treatment modalities it was possible to carry out enteral administration of nutrients in a group of patients, in whom otherwise only total parenteral feeding or enteral feeding by needle catheter jejunostomy was considered feasible. The use of endoscopic equipment permitted correct placement of tubes beyond the stomach either in the duodenum, at the ligament of Treitz or into the jejunum. Also simult

OBJECTIVE: Over 3% of infants born annually in the United States are from a multiple gestation pregnancy, yet there is little data published about the feeding practices of their mothers. The objectives of this study were to determine and compare the rates of breast milk feeding of mothers of multiples and mothers of singletons.
METHODS: Stratified random sampling (n = 686) on the basis of plurality of pregnancy and gestational age at delivery was performed on a 1999 birth certificate database in the greater Cincinnati area. We collected information about infant feeding during the first 6 mont

Purpose: To investigate associations between feeding practices and the prevalence of oral Rothia, at the species and genus level, with early childhood caries (ECC). Methods: A total of 438 children were included in this cross-sectional study. A questionnaire was completed by the parent of each participant. Based on the feeding history, participants were classified as exclusively breastfed, exclusively bottle-fed, or mixed (both feeding). Supragingival plaque samples were collected, and 16S rRNA sequencing was used to assess Rothia genus and species' relative abundances. The association between

ISSUE ADDRESSED: Exclusive breastfeeding to 6 months of age is recommended. Currently, there is a lack of Australian data exploring infant feeding behaviours and the sources of information women use to guide infant feeding decisions. This study aimed to describe (i) infant feeding practices (breastfeeding, infant formula/other fluids, introduction of solids) of women with infants aged 6-8 months; and (ii) the information sources women use most frequently and find most helpful to make decisions regarding infant feeding practices.
METHODS: Between August and October 2021, 356 mother-infant dyad

BACKGROUND: Spinal cord injury (SCI) is a devastating condition with a high burden of morbidity and mortality. National guidelines state that patients should not receive enteral feeding for 48 hours after inury, which may be detrimental if a patient experiences a hypercatabolic response to polytrauma. We conducted a systematic review of the benefits and harms of delayed enteral feeding in this population.
METHODS: We searched MEDLINE, EMBASE and Cochrane CENTRAL for studies which had a time parameter as part of their evaluation of feeding in the acute phase of spinal cord injury in a critical

OBJECTIVE: Feeding and swallowing difficulties in children are increasing due to improved survival rates of children with complex medical conditions. Despite being common complications of esophageal atresia (EA), EA related feeding difficulties have received little attention in research. Establishing positive feeding interactions and practices are important for child health and development, and for parental and child mental health. The current study aimed to investigate the parental experiences of feeding a child born with EA.
METHODS: An international online survey was developed and dissemin

BACKGROUND & AIMS: During treatment for cancer, children experience many side effects such as lack of appetite, nausea, and vomiting. As a result, ensuring adequate intake puts pressure on both the child and the parent. This study aims to determine the prevalence, causes and consequences of eating and feeding problems in children treated for cancer.
METHODS: Parents of 85 children with cancer completed the Behavioral Pediatrics Feeding Assessment Scale (BPFAS) and symptoms, BMI, energy intake, feeding style, and parental distress were measured at 0, 3, 6 and 12 months after diagnosis.

BACKGROUND: The Baby-Friendly Hospital Initiative began promoting exclusive breast-feeding in 2001 in Taiwan; however, few studies have investigated its impact. This study evaluated the influence of breast-feeding on Taiwanese neonates with regard to the frequency of jaundice, body weight loss (BWL), and elimination of both urine and stool.
METHODS: The medical records of 313 healthy mother-neonate pairs admitted at our hospital were reviewed retrospectively and divided into three groups: exclusively breast-feeding (n=161), mixed (breast/formula) feeding (n=80), and exclusively formula feedin

OBJECTIVE: To study the pattern of gastric emptying in very premature infants and to determine whether there are changes with postnatal age and the ability to tolerate feedings.
METHODS: Sequential ultrasound measurements of the gastric antral cross-sectional area were obtained in 32 infants (mean gestational age, 26 +/- 1 weeks) before and after feeding for 2 hours. Studies were carried out after initiation of feedings, when full feedings were received, and at 32 weeks. Infants classified as feeding intolerant (n = 9) were also studied when feedings were restarted. Gastric emptying was asses

In initiating enteral feedings for high-risk infants, clinicians struggle with three fundamental questions: When should enteral feedings be initiated? Should a period of trophic (minimal) feeding be provided? When feedings are advanced, how rapidly should the volume be increased? We present the findings of our systematic reviews of randomized trials addressing each of these questions. These reviews identified various limited short-term benefits of initiating feedings early, providing a period of trophic feedings, and increasing the volume at a relatively rapid rate when feedings are advanced.

Nutritional treatment in critical care patients is an important component of the complete treatment plan. Assessment of nutritional status and careful consideration of the disease course will help guide the selection of the most appropriate assisted-feeding method. Enteral nutrition is favored over parenteral nutrition when the gastrointestinal tract is functional. Common routes of enteral feeding include nasoesophageal, esophagostomy, gastrostomy, and jejunostomy feeding tubes. Parenteral nutrition is indicated for patients who cannot tolerate enteral feedings, or are poor anesthetic candidat

The World Health Organization considers maternal breast feeding to be the ideal manner to feed a newborn child, as well as being a unique biological and emotional base, and recommends breast feeding to be the exclusive feeding method until the age of six months. After a period of massive abandonment caused by multiple socio-cultural causes beginning about a half century ago, breast feeding is now starting to make a slow recuperation. In Spain, there is an initial predisposition to breast feed of about 80%. However, in spite of the initiatives carried out by organizations and professional group

BACKGROUND: Early Childhood Caries (ECC) is a prevalent multifactorial disease strongly influenced by dietary and behavioral factors. Night-time feeding practices and sugar exposure have been implicated, yet the relative impact of feeding duration, feeding type, and oral hygiene remains debated. This study aimed to investigate the association between ECC and major dietary and behavioral risk factors, with particular emphasis on the presence and duration of night-time feeding, in a pediatric population from Southern Italy.
METHODS: A single-center retrospective observational study was conducte

BACKGROUND: Feeding practices and behaviours in children with cystic fibrosis (cwCF) are thought to be atypical, with evidence pertaining to lower breastfeeding rates and higher problematic mealtime behaviours compared to the general population. To date, there has been no systematic approach to synthesising this evidence.
OBJECTIVE: This review aims to map the available literature on feeding practices, feeding behaviours and feeding disorders in infants and cwCF.
METHODS: Six electronic databases (MEDLINE, Embase, Emcare, PsycINFO, Cochrane and CINAHL) were searched on September 13th, 2024 a

BACKGROUND: Maintaining adequate nutrition is critical for people with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), also known as motor neuron disease (MND). Enteral tube feeding is offered to people experiencing difficulty swallowing (dysphagia) to prevent weight loss and aspiration pneumonia. Among the types of enteral tube feeding, percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy (PEG) is the typical procedure offered to people with ALS and will be mainly discussed here.
OBJECTIVES: To examine the effectiveness of percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy or other enteral tube feeding in people with ALS, compared to

BACKGROUND: Although Pre-lacteal feeding is a barrier for implementation of optimal breastfeeding practices and increases the risk of neonatal illness and mortality, still it is continued as a deep-rooted nutritional malpractice in developing countries. In Ethiopia pre-lacteal feeding continued as one of the nutritional malpractices in newborns. Therefore the aim of this study was to assess pre-lacteal feeding practice and its determinants among mothers of children less than 24 months of age in Sodo zuria district, Wolaita zone, Southern Ethiopia.
METHODS: Community-based cross-sectional stud
