Nitrate reduction and iron (II) oxidation by subsurface bacteria from the Iberian Pyritic Belt: Insights into the biogeochemical cycles in this environment.

Nitrogen and iron are central to Earth's biogeochemical cycles. The Iberian Pyrite Belt (IPB), a vast iron reservoir, hosts extremophilic microorganisms adapted to high metal and sulfur concentrations. This study investigates two isolates from the deep IPB subsurface, Citrobacter telavivensis T1.2D-1 and Stutzerimonas stutzeri T2.31D-1, evaluating their nitrate-reducing capacity and the role of iron in denitrification, with emphasis on nitrate-dependent ferrous iron oxidation (NDFO). Both species could reduce nitrate in sucrose-, lactate-, or acetate-fed medium, while their consortium enhanced

Membrane Vesicle Formation Removes Iron Sulfide Mineral Crusts From the Cell Surface of Growing Sulfate-Reducing Bacteria.

Sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB) drive the process of sulfate reduction in low-temperature sedimentary environments. Through the production of sulfide, they promote the formation of iron-sulfide (Fe-S) minerals when Fe(II) is available. The negative charge of the cell surface of bacteria can promote the binding of Fe(II), leading to the precipitation of Fe-S minerals at the surface of SRB when sulfide is released from cells. We evaluated interactions between Fe-S minerals and the surface of SRB using transmission electron microscopy (TEM) in cultures of Maridesulfovibrio hydrothermalis AM13 gro

Fe(II) complexation-regulated iron allocation supports coupled nitrogen and phosphorus removal in an anammox-FePs granular system.

Iron stimulates nitrogen metabolism and concurrently facilitates phosphate mineralization in anammox systems. However, this dual contribution directs iron into competing biological and mineral pathways that remain poorly understood. Here, Fe(II) complexation-regulated dosing was applied to control iron availability and balance metabolic enhancement with Fe-P precipitation in an anammox-FePs granular system. A four-phase regulation strategy revealed that balanced iron allocation was critical for efficient nitrate reduction and simultaneous phosphorus sequestration, achieving 99.5% total nitroge

Excellent Fe(II) Binding Tag in Protein Paramagnetic NMR Spectroscopy.

Most first series of transition metal ions have one or more unpaired electrons and show great variations in the paramagnetic property. The magnetic anisotropy of some transition metal ions, including Co(II), as well as lanthanide ions [Ln(III)], has been well examined in proteins by NMR. In contrast, few examples of Fe(II) complexes reporting the magnetic anisotropy were analyzed in proteins, except for the ones containing a heme motif or iron-sulfur clusters. Here, we showed that [2,2':6',2″-terpyridine]-6,6″-dicarboxylic acid (TDA) is an excellent iron-binding ligand. It forms a stable iron

Effects of ferrous ions partitioning at the oil-water interface on the oxidative stability of Antarctic krill (Euphausia superba) oil: Reverse micelles alter the physical location of ferrous ions.

This study investigates the role of ferrous ion partitioning in promoting lipid oxidation in Antarctic krill oil (AKO) containing reverse micelles. Cryogenic transmission electron microscopy and small-angle X-ray scattering confirmed the presence of reverse micelles in AKO. AKO with ferrous sulfate (FeSO4, water-soluble iron) and ferrous fumarate (C4H2FeO4, oil-soluble iron) were stored at 60 °C. Interestingly, compared with oil-soluble Fe2+, water-soluble Fe2+ significantly enhanced oxidation. Confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM) showed that water-soluble Fe2+ and lipid hydroperoxides (L

Dichloroethene reduction by Fe(II): role of transient Fe(II) phases.

Chlorinated ethenes (CEs) are some of the most commonly found groundwater contaminants, and their clean-up still relies heavily on energy intensive clean-up practices such as pump and treat. As a sustainable alternative, abiotic natural attenuation by Fe(II) species would be preferable. While data is available on reduction of some CEs by stable Fe(II) phases, these reactions appear to be slower than reduction by freshly precipitated, transient Fe(II) phases (i.e., reactive mineral intermediates, RMIs). Here, we evaluated cis-1,2-dichloroethene (cDCE) reduction by stable and transient Fe(II)-co

Removal of Fe(II) from water using raw and calcinated weathered basalt: Influence of mineralogy and physical properties.

In this study, raw weathered basalt (RWB) and calcinated weathered basalt (CWB), both low-cost natural geological materials, were employed for the removal of Fe(II) from contaminated aqueous solutions and groundwater. CWB was prepared by calcining RWB at 900 °C for 3 h. Batch adsorption experiments were conducted, and the data fitted best with the Langmuir isotherm model. The adsorption kinetics followed the pseudo-second-order and intra-particle diffusion models. Although calcination improved the surface area and porosity, RWB exhibited higher Fe(II) removal efficiency, likely due to its rich

Spectroscopic definition of ferrous active sites in non-heme iron enzymes.

Non-heme iron enzymes play key roles in antibiotic, neurotransmitter, and natural product biosynthesis, DNA repair, hypoxia regulation, and disease states. These enzymes had been refractory to traditional bioinorganic spectroscopic methods. Thus, we developed variable-temperature variable-field magnetic circular dichroism (VTVH MCD) spectroscopy to experimentally define the excited and ground ligand field states of non-heme ferrous enzymes (Solomon et al., 1995). This method provides detailed geometric and electronic structure insight and thus enables a molecular level understanding of catalyt

Sulfur-carbon loop enhanced efficient nitrogen removal mechanism from iron sulfide-mediated mixotrophic partial denitrification/anammox systems.

This study successfully established Iron Sulfide-Mediated mixotrophic Partial Denitrification/Anammox system, achieving nitrogen and phosphorus removal efficiency of 97.26% and 78.12%, respectively, with COD/NO3--N of 1.00. Isotopic experiments and X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy analysis confirmed that iron sulfide enhanced autotrophic Partial Denitrification performance. Meanwhile, various sulfur valence states functioned as electron buffers, reinforcing nitrogen and sulfur cycles. Microbial community analysis indicated reduced heterotrophic denitrifiers (OLB8, OLB13) under lower COD/NO3--N

Colorimetric Detection of Fentanyl Powder on Surfaces Using a Supramolecular Displacement Assay.

Fentanyl is a potent synthetic opioid with an alarmingly low lethal dosage of 2 mg. The equipment necessary to detect fentanyl in field settings (e.g., hand-held spectrometers) is restricted to highly trained, well-funded, and specialized personnel. Established point-of-need technologies, such as lateral flow immunochromatographic strips, are available; however, they often involve multiple contact-based steps (e.g., collection, mixing) that pose a higher risk to users handling unknown substances. Herein, we developed a colorimetric displacement assay capable of contactless detection of fentany

Organic-rich bimineralic ooids record biological processes in Shark Bay, Western Australia.

Marine ooids have formed in microbially colonized environments for billions of years, but the microbial contributions to mineral formation in ooids continue to be debated. Here we provide evidence of these contributions in ooids from Carbla Beach, Shark Bay, Western Australia. Dark 100-240 μm diameter ooids from Carbla Beach contain two different carbonate minerals. These ooids have 50-100 μm-diameter dark nuclei that contain aragonite, amorphous iron sulfide, detrital aluminosilicate grains and organic matter, and 10-20 μm-thick layers of high-Mg calcite that separate nuclei from aragonitic o

Superior photo-Fenton degradation of acetamiprid by α- Fe2O3-pillared bentonite/L-cysteine complex: Synergy of L-cysteine and visible light.

Acetamiprid is a potential threat to human health, aquatic life, soil microorganisms and beneficial insects as a recalcitrant pollutant in wastewater treatment plant effluents. In this work, the synthesized α-Fe2O3-pillared bentonite (FPB) was used to degrade acetamiprid in the photo-Fenton process with the assistance of L-cysteine (L-cys) existing in natural aquatic environment. The kinetic constant k of acetamiprid degradation by FPB/L-cys in the photo-Fenton process was far more than that in the Fenton process of FPB/L-cys lacking light and the photo-Fenton process of FPB without L-cys. Efficacy of polysaccharide iron complex in IDA rats: A comparative study with iron protein succinylate and ferrous succinate.

Iron deficiency anemia (IDA) is the most common nutrient-related health problem in the world. There is still a lack of comprehensive comparative study on the efficacies of commonly used iron supplements such as polysaccharide iron complex (PIC), iron protein succinylate (IPS) and ferrous succinate (FS) for IDA. In this study, we compared the PIC, IPS and FS efficacies in IDA rats via intragastric administration. The results showed that the three iron supplements had similar efficacies. PIC/IPS/FS at a dose of 15 mg Fe/kg/d for 10 d increased the hematological and serum biochemical parameters t

Iron and Copper Alter the Oxidative Potential of Secondary Organic Aerosol: Insights from Online Measurements and Model Development.

The oxidative potential (OP) of particulate matter has been widely suggested as a key metric for describing atmospheric particle toxicity. Secondary organic aerosol (SOA) and redox-active transition metals, such as iron and copper, are key drivers of particle OP. However, their relative contributions to OP, as well as the influence of metal-organic interactions and particulate chemistry on OP, remains uncertain. In this work, we simultaneously deploy two novel online instruments for the first time, providing robust quantification of particle OP. We utilize online AA (OPAA) and 2,7-dichlorofluo
