Dependency and interdependency: the incomes of informal carers and the impact of social security.

Consideration of the income and social security needs of informal carers has remained conspicuously absent from discussions about 'community care'. Similarly, carers have been more or less invisible in the development of social security policies. This paper reports on a study of the financial circumstances of a sample of working age carers, who were living with and providing substantial amounts of help and support to a disabled person in the same household. The study highlights first, the substantial work-related costs incurred by carers with full time employment; and second the financial depe

Financial Decision Making in Older Adults Is Associated With Frontoparietal-Salience Between-Network Connectivity.

Financial decision making (FDM) and awareness of one's own financial decision making abilities are both clinically and practically important constructs in older adults. Structural and functional neuroimaging may be useful to shed light on the neural mechanisms supporting these constructs and further help identify those at risk for making poor decisions and losing money. We used resting state (rs)-functional connectivity in the present study. We hypothesized that Frontoparietal-Salience (FP-SAL) between-network connectivity would be most strongly associated with FDM, while Default Mode Network-

Factors Associated with Participation in Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) among Low-Income Households: A Scoping Review.

Households with limited financial resources often struggle with inadequate access to healthy, affordable food. Community supported agriculture (CSA) has the potential to improve access to fresh fruits and vegetables, yet low-income households seldom participate due to cost and other barriers. Cost-offset (or subsidized) CSA reduces financial barriers, yet engagement varies widely among those who enroll. This scoping review explored factors associated with CSA participation among low-income households in the United States. Eighteen articles met the inclusion criteria, quantitative and qualitati

Decision-Making Support for People With Alzheimer's Disease: A Narrative Review.

The proportion of people with dementia has been increasing yearly, and the decision-making capacity of these people has become a major concern in fields such as the financial industry and in medical settings. In this narrative review, we discuss decision-making in people with Alzheimer's disease (AD), and we propose the support for decision-making in people with AD, especially financial and medical decision-making. We summarize several hypotheses and theories on the decision-making capacity of people with AD. These include the frontal lobe hypothesis, physiological theory, dysfunction of the h

The role of social support and integration for understanding socioeconomic disparities in self-rated health and hypertension.

This paper examines socioeconomic (socioeconomic status, SES) disparities in self-rated health and hypertension among 29,816 US adults aged 25 and older using data from the 2001 wave of the National Health Interview Survey. Our purpose is to examine how influential measures of social support and social integration are for each health outcome, and whether support and integration operate by mediating, or buffering, the effects of SES on health. Multivariate regression models show no significant influence of emotional support, but do indicate that many aspects of social integration are directly a

"…it is not the sickness itself that kills. It is the emotional trauma": a qualitative study of the lived experience and systemic barriers of women with breast cancer in Nigeria.

BACKGROUND: Breast cancer is the leading cancer among Nigerian women and is commonly diagnosed at an advanced stage; yet the everyday realities that influence patient outcomes and well-being remain underexplored. Understanding the lived experiences of Nigerian breast cancer patients is critical for developing culturally appropriate, supportive, and palliative care services. AIM: To explore the lived experiences, needs and coping strategies of women living with and beyond breast cancer in Nigeria. DESIGN: Qualitative study using a constructivist-interpretivist paradigm. A Healthcare Finance Model for the United States: A Conceptual Workflow for Episode-Based Pricing, Risk Sharing, and Value-Based Accountability Using Bundled Payment as the Core Mechanism.

The United States healthcare system is increasingly moving toward bundled payments as a model for value-based accountability. This approach functions as a healthcare finance model in which the episode of care serves as the central unit of payment design. Rather than reimbursing individual services separately, it organizes costs, risk, incentives, accountability, and quality measurement around the full clinical episode, making the episode the core framework for both financial and care delivery decisions. Under traditional fee-for-service reimbursement, services are paid separately, which can fr

Financial toxicity, family resilience and symptom burden in liver cancer patients: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Financial toxicity has emerged as a critical concern in oncology care, reflecting the severe economic and psychological distress patients experience due to treatment costs. While socioeconomic factors are known contributors, the potential protective role of psychosocial assets, such as family resilience, remains underexplored. This study aimed to investigate the prevalence and predictors of financial toxicity among liver cancer patients in China, with a specific focus on the roles of family resilience, psychological distress, and symptom burden. METHODS: Participants were required

Financial Hardship and Unhealthy Lifestyles: Perspectives and Solutions From Breast Cancer Survivors and Their Care Teams.

IntroductionFinancial hardship may undermine healthy lifestyle behaviors that are important for preventing avoidable recurrence and death during survivorship after breast cancer diagnosis. Significant research has characterized these challenges and disparities, but relatively little research has identified which strategies patients and their teams may prefer to overcome these challenges. We employ an assets lens to highlight patient-identified strategies to circumvent barriers across Social-Ecological Model (SEM) levels.MethodsWe conducted a secondary qualitative analysis of semi-structured in

Poverty, childcare responsibilities, and stigma hinder adolescent mothers from returning to school in a low-income urban informal settlement in Kenya.

BACKGROUND: While a few studies have examined barriers to school re-entry among adolescent mothers, studies focusing on the experiences of g … rls from returning to school, they contended that robust support systems encompassing childcare and financial support, and less hostile school environments constituted facilitators of school re-entry among parenting adolescents. CONCLUSION: While the 2020 National Guidelines for School Re-entry in Kenya seek to deter the exclusion of adolescent mothers from educat …

The Relationships Between Spirituality, Tendency to Forgive, Social Support, and Posttraumatic Stress Disorder Symptoms and Stress Among Female Survivors of Sexual Assault.

Over the past few years, there has been a growing awareness of the extent and consequences of sexual assault. Sexual assault has long-term consequences for the survivor's mental health and brings into question the resources available to survivors for dealing with the consequences of the assault. The positive effects of spirituality and forgiveness on mental health are well documented; however, few studies have examined how sexual assault survivors use spiritual beliefs and forgiveness to cope with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and stress symptoms. Social support is another resource that

Exploring the workload of informal caregiving in the context of HIV/NCD multimorbidity in South Africa.

The importance of informal caregiving for chronic illness has been well established in African contexts but is underexplored in the context of HIV/NCD multimorbidity, particularly in South Africa. Building on treatment burden theories that investigate workload in the context of chronic illness, this paper explores how informal caregiving networks impact the capacity of people living with multimorbidity (PLWMM) in low-income settings in urban and rural South Africa. Qualitative semi-structured interviews were carried out with thirty people living with multimorbidity and sixteen informal caregiv

Temporary Financial Assistance Decreased Health Care Costs For Veterans Experiencing Housing Instability.

Compared with housed people, those experiencing homelessness have longer and more expensive inpatient stays as well as more frequent emergency department visits. Efforts to provide stable housing situations for people experiencing homelessness could reduce health care costs. Through the Supportive Services for Veteran Families program, the Department of Veterans Affairs partners with community organizations to provide temporary financial assistance to veterans who are currently homeless or at imminent risk of becoming homeless. We examined the impact of temporary financial assistance on health
