Conflicting Dynamics of Galling and Pollination: Arastichus gallicola (Hymenoptera, Eulophidae), a Specialized Parasitic Galler in Pistillate Flowers of Thaumatophyllum bipinnatifidum (Araceae).

In the complex dynamics of plant-insect interactions, the specialized galling of reproductive structures presents unique evolutionary adaptations. This study investigates the parasitic relationship between Arastichus gallicola (Hymenoptera, Eulophidae), an ovary-galling wasp, and the inflorescences of Thaumatophyllum bipinnatifidum (Araceae). We employed field experiments and histological analyses to investigate the mechanisms driving this interaction. We reveal that ovule fertilization is not required for gall formation; however, pollination substantially enhances gall retention by reducing i

Roots, Leaves, and Flowers: A Narrative Review of Herbs and Botanicals Used for Self-Managed Abortion in Asia and the Pacific.

Abortion has existed throughout history, often outside of formal health care systems. This type of care, now called self-managed abortion, has historically been achieved in part through botanicals and traditional medicines. Their use continues into the modern day, especially in Asia, Hawai'i, and other Pacific Islands, where indigenous medicine traditions practice alongside allopathic medicine. Many of these botanicals, such as papaya leaves, hibiscus flowers, and young kī, and traditional medicines, such as tianhuafen, yuanhua, and Shenghua Decoction, have undergone scientific and clinical in…

Metabolomics and polysaccharide fingerprinting reveal compositional differences between cultivated Fritillaria bulbs and flower by-products.

Although Fritillariae Cirrhosae Bulbus (FCB) is used in food-related product contexts and local botanical-infusion practices, co-produced flowers remain underutilized and poorly characterized. To support QC-oriented screening and consistency evaluation, we compared bulbs and flowers from two dominant cultivated sources, F. unibracteata var. wabuensis (FW) and F. unibracteata (F), across 36 batches. UHPLC-Q-TOF-MS metabolomics annotated 76 compounds and discriminated between cultivated source and tissue, yielding candidate markers. Targeted UHPLC-QQQ-MS quantified five alkaloids; peiminine diff…

Natural variation in GmRVE4d facilitates soybean latitudinal adaptation by regulating GmPRR5a-dependent flowering and maturity.

Timely flowering and maturity are crucial for plant reproduction and environmental adaptation. Light-dark cycle-associated regulatory networks integrate photoperiodic cues with intrinsic developmental programs and play pivotal roles in flowering, maturity and environmental adaptation. Soybean is a short-day crop with strong photoperiod responsiveness; however, the molecular mechanisms by which these networks mediate soybean adaptation to diverse environments remain largely elusive. Here, we combine genome-wide association analysis with deep learning-based assessment of soybean maturity variati

CCRG1 Acts as a Downstream Effector of the Clock Proteins CCA1 and LHY to Coordinate Growth, Flowering, and Senescence.

The circadian clock is an endogenous oscillator that generates ~24-h rhythms, enabling plants to anticipate and adapt to daily environmental cycles. E3 ubiquitin ligases are central regulators of protein turnover in signaling pathways, but their roles in the plant circadian system have yet to be fully elucidated. In this study, we find that the transcript of E3 ligase CCRG1 shows diurnal rhythmicity and sustained oscillation under continuous light in Arabidopsis thaliana. Molecular analyses demonstrate that the core clock components LATE ELONGATED HYPOCOTYL (LHY) and CIRCADIAN CLOCK ASSOCIATED

MiPP2C44 promotes early flowering in Arabidopsis and enhances abiotic stress tolerance in mango hairy roots.

Protein phosphatase 2 C (PP2C) family members play important regulatory roles in plant development and abiotic stress responses, yet their functions in mango (Mangifera indica L.) remain poorly understood. In our previous research, a PP2C protein (MiPP2C44) was identified by screening a flowering-related yeast library from mango using flowering-associated proteins. In the present study, the function of MiPP2C44 was further investigated. Expression analysis revealed that MiPP2C44 was highly expressed in leaves and induced by salt and osmotic stress. Subcellular localization analysis showed that

Salicylic acid exerts effects on regulating flower bud differentiation and nutrient contents in red radish.

Red radish (Raphanus sativus L. var. carminatus) is a characteristic economic crop in China, with flower bud differentiation efficiency directly determining its yield and quality. However, how salicylic acid (SA) affects this process and tuber quality remains unexplored. Here, we investigated different SA concentrations' effects on endogenous hormones (GA3, IAA, CTK), flower bud differentiation, flowering, and pollen traits, alongside leaf soluble sugar, starch, and protein levels. We also applied response surface methodology (RSM) to build a regression model for optimizing SA application para

First Observation of Wild Double-Flowered Rhododendron nivale With Stamen Petaloidy and Possible Parallel Evolution.

Parallel evolution of similar phenotypes under similar selective pressures is often viewed as evidence for natural selection. However, how often such parallel variation occurs in floral traits, and its underlying mechanisms, remain poorly understood-especially in alpine plants. Here we report the first discovery of wild double-flowered plants in Rhododendron nivale, a dwarf shrub of the eastern Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, and the first record of double flowers in subsection Lapponica (small-leaved, high-altitude sky-island shrubs). Naturally occurring stamen petaloidy was found in two geographicall…

Extraction pH modulates structural, functional, and antioxidant characteristics of banana (Musa spp.) flower polysaccharides.

Banana flower is an underutilized agricultural by-product and a potential source of functional polysaccharides. In this study, the influence of extraction pH (2-12) on the structural and functional properties of banana flower polysaccharides (BFPs) was evaluated. The extraction yield increased significantly from 7.64% at pH 2 to 14.04% at pH 12. In contrast, acidic and near-neutral conditions better preserved the total sugar content, molecular weight (16.90-18.53 kDa), degree of esterification, galactose, and arabinose-rich regions. Strong alkaline extraction promoted de-esterification, reduct

Flower-Visiting Insect Diversity Within Buckwheat Crops: An Underutilized Crop for Sustainable Economic Livelihoods.

Buckwheat (Fagopyrum esculentum) is an important source of nutrition for humans, providing essential nutrients such as protein, fiber, vitamins, and minerals. Its cultivation is highly attractive to flower-visiting insects, which find abundant nectar and a moderate amount of pollen grains. This study aimed to characterize the taxonomic diversity and composition of flower-visiting insect communities in buckwheat crops across two sites in Chitwan district, Nepal and to assess whether temperature and relative humidity influence community structure. We further quantified the contribution of insect

Advances in the nanostructure characterization of biological hydrogels formed by the prion-like domain of EARLY FLOWERING 3.

Hydrogels exhibit traits of both liquids and solids, forming a 3D structural network with generally high water content, high porosity and increasing stability over time. However, probing the structure of hydrogels is challenging due to the semi-disordered nature of their internal molecular organization and the presence of multiple species with varying dynamics. Small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) is well suited to study materials of this nature due to its ability to probe different length scales and to provide information as to the structure and conformation of different molecular species with

Antagonistic regulation by mango MiSPL9a and MiSPL9b regulates flowering time, drought and salt stress in Arabidopsis.

SQUAMOSA PROMOTER BINDING PROTEIN-LIKE (SPL) transcription factors, which are unique to plants, contain a highly conserved SBP domain that regulates gene expression by binding to downstream targets. They play critical roles in various biological processes, especially in the regulation of flowering in plants. In this study, two SPL-like genes (MiSPL9a and MiSPL9b) were identified from mango genomic and transcriptomic data, and their sequence, expression and function were further analyzed. Sequence analysis revealed that MiSPL9a and MiSPL9b have open reading frames of 1173 bp and 1158 bp, respec
