Slow-release fluoride devices for the control of dental decay.

BACKGROUND: Slow-release fluoride devices have been investigated as a potentially cost-effective method of reducing dental caries in people with high risk of disease. This is the second update of the Cochrane Review first published in 2006 and previously updated in 2014. OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the effectiveness and safety of different types of slow-release fluoride devices on preventing, arresting, or reversing the progression of carious lesions on all surface types of primary (deciduous) and permanent teeth. SEARCH METHODS: Cochrane Oral Health's Information Specialist searched the followi

High Concentration of Fluoride Can Be Increased Risk of Abortion.

The presence of fluoride in drinking water can be either beneficial or harmful for human health, depending on its concentration. Most adverse effects of fluoride are observed at high concentrations (above 1.5 mg/L). This study was aimed to evaluate the effect of fluoride concentrations in drinking water on spontaneous abortion in two regions: one with low fluoride concentration and another with high fluoride concentration. The results showed that there is a relationship between the concentration of fluoride in drinking water and abortion, so that the risk of abortion increased at high concentr

Sodium fluoride causes oxidative stress and apoptosis in cementoblasts.

OBJECTIVES: Toothpaste with fluoride concentration up to 5000 ppm are recommended to the patients who are susceptible to root caries; however, the effects of fluoride on cementoblasts have received less attention. METHODS: The OCCM-30 cells were exposed to 0,0.5, 5, 10 mM NaF respectively. A TUNEL (TdT-mediated dUTP-biotin nick end labeling) assay kit was used to detect the DNA fragmentation. Hoechst staining was used to determine changes of nuclear morphology. Real-time quantitative RT-PCR and Western blotting were performed to investigate the mRNA and protein expression of caspase-3,-8,-9,

Effects of Fluoride on SOD and CAT in Testis and Epididymis of Mice.

Oxidative damage has been implicated to be one of main mechanisms by which fluoride (F) induces toxic effects. Previous studies reported that F destroyed the epididymal structure of mouse and rabbit. Epididymis is the important place for sperm maturation. However, little is known about the effect of F on the oxidative stress status of epididymis. Therefore, the aim of the present study was to explore the changes in the activities and transcriptional levels of CuZn superoxide dismutase (CuZn-SOD, SOD1) and catalase (CAT), as well as the ultrastructure, in testis and epididymis of mice administr

Risk assessment of fluoride exposure in drinking water of Tunisia.

The presence of fluoride in drinking water is known to reduce dental cavities among consumers, but an excessive intake of this anion might leads to dental and skeletal fluorosis. This study reports a complete survey of the fluoridated tap water taken from 100 water consumption points in Tunisia. The fluoride concentrations in tap water were between 0 and 2.4 mg L-1. Risk assessment of Fluoride exposure was assessed depending on the age of consumers using a four-step method: hazard identification, toxicity reference values selection (TRVs), daily exposure assessment, and risk characterization.

Relationship between enamel fluorosis severity and fluoride content.

OBJECTIVES: Enamel fluorosis is a hypomineralization caused by chronic exposure to high levels of fluoride during tooth development. Previous research on the relationship between enamel fluoride content and fluorosis severity has been equivocal. The current study aimed at comparing visually and histologically assessed fluorosis severity with enamel fluoride content. METHODS: Extracted teeth (n=112) were visually examined using the Thylstrup and Fejerskov Index for fluorosis. Eruption status of each tooth was noted. Teeth were cut into 100 μm slices to assess histological changes with polarize

[CHRONIC FLUORIDE INTOXICATION AS A RISK FACTOR FOR THE DEVELOPMENT OF ATHEROSCLEROSIS].

In workers employed in the aluminum industry, the main harmful production factor is exposure to fluoride salts, which can cause chronic fluoride intoxication. For the assessment of the impact of chronic fluoride intoxication on the development of atherosclerosis, we conducted a comprehensive survey of 87 aluminum-metal makers with chronic fluoride intoxication and 43 aluminum-metal makers without occupational diseases, mean age--52.1 ± 0.4 years. There were considered the presence and severity of atherosclerosis of brachiocephalic arteries, and the arteries of the lower extremities in the stud

The future of fluorides and other protective agents in erosion prevention.

The effectiveness of fluoride in caries prevention has been convincingly proven. In recent years, researchers have investigated the preventive effects of different fluoride formulations on erosive tooth wear with positive results, but their action on caries and erosion prevention must be based on different requirements, because there is no sheltered area in the erosive process as there is in the subsurface carious lesions. Thus, any protective mechanism from fluoride concerning erosion is limited to the surface or the near surface layer of enamel. However, reports on other protective agents sh

[A novel infrared chemosensor for recognition of fluoride and acetate anions].

A novel organometallic chromophore with potential infrared (IR) chemical sensing property, named as N'-(2-pyridinyl)-N-phenylurea tricarbonyl chromium, was synthesized and systematically characterized by nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), mass spectra (MS) and elemental analysis. The recognition and IR sensing behavior toward fluoride and acetate anions was investigated in chloroform. The results of IR titration indicated that, when the concentration of the two anions was greater than 10(-5) mol.L-1, a good linear relationship between the stretching vibration of metal carbonyl of N'-(2-pyridiny

Pharmacokinetics in the oral cavity: fluoride and other active ingredients.

Modern commercial toothpastes contain therapeutic ingredients to combat various oral conditions, for example, caries, gingivitis, calculus and tooth stain. The efficient delivery and retention of such ingredients in the mouth is essential for good performance. The aim of this chapter is to review the literature on the oral pharmacokinetics of, primarily, fluoride but also other active ingredients, mainly anti-plaque agents. Elevated levels of fluoride have been found in saliva, plaque and the oral soft tissues after use of fluoridated toothpaste, which persist at potentially active concentrati

The toxicity mechanism of sodium fluoride on fertility in female rats.

Recognition of the harmful effects of sodium fluoride (NaF) on human reproduction is increasing, especially as it relates to female reproduction. However, the mechanism by which NaF interferes with female reproduction is unclear. The aims of the present study were to investigate the effects of fluoride exposure on female fertility and to elucidate the mechanisms underlying these effects. Female Sprague-Dawley rats were divided into three groups: one control group and two NaF-treated groups (100 and 200 mg/L in the drinking water for 12 weeks). Several parameters were evaluated, including: (i)

Occurence and distribution of fluoride in groundwaters of central Rajasthan, India.

High fluoride in groundwater has been reported from many parts of India, particularly its impact on human health. Waterborne fluorosis is prevalent in parts of Ajmer and Jaipur districts in central Rajasthan which can be correlated to excessive concentration of the toxic fluoride ions in drinking water. The area, falling under the semiarid terrain of central Rajasthan, is geologically occupied by Precambrian rocks where groundwater occurs under unconfined conditions. Fluoride concentration in shallow aquifer samples of the study area ranges between 0.12 to 16.9 mg/L. Presence of fluoride beari

Occurrence and problems of high fluoride waters in Turkey: an overview.

Endemic dental fluorosis was first observed in Turkey in Isparta Province, located in the SW of Anatolia, with mottled enamel related to the high levels of fluoride (1.5-4.0 ppm) in drinking waters, about 55 years ago. The origin of fluoride was attributed to the contents of minerals in volcanic rocks, consisting of pyroxene, hornblende, biotite, fluorapatite and glassy groundmass minerals. It was also reported about 35 years ago that severe dental and skeletal fluorosis has been observed in human beings and livestock in Dogubeyazit and Caldiran areas, located around Tendurek Volcano in easter
