Inactivation of norovirus and surrogates by natural phytochemicals and bioactive substances.

Human norovirus is the leading cause of sporadic gastroenteritis, which is responsible for more than 90% of all nonbacterial gastroenteritis outbreaks. While norovirus infections typically cause mild and self-limiting symptoms lasting 24-48 h, chronic persistent infections can cause severe symptoms. Although recent advances have been made in understanding the molecular characteristics of norovirus infection, no norovirus-specific antiviral drugs, or vaccines are available. Conventional intervention methods used to inactivate norovirus, such as treatment with disinfecting agents (e.g. ethanol,

Cinnamic aldehyde in toothpaste. 1. Clinical aspects and patch tests.

Although cinnamon is known to cause dermatitis in bakers and confectioners, it has only rarely been reported as causing trouble in food or cosmetics. A newly-formulated 'spicy' toothpaste containing cinnamon as a flavouring agent was the cause of oral symptoms in eight patients referred to clinics in Buckinghamshire and in Malmö and in a further eight patients discovered subsequently. Similar symptoms and patch test results were observed independently at both centres. Positive reactions were obtained with 1% cinnamic aldehyde in 15 out of 16 patients tested. Only one patient reacted to a stand

Orange-fleshed sweet potato-based infant food is a better source of dietary vitamin A than a maize-legume blend as complementary food.

BACKGROUND: White maize, which is widely used for complementary feeding and is seldom fortified at the household level, may be associated with the high prevalence of vitamin A deficiency among infants in low-income countries. OBJECTIVE: The nutrient composition of complementary foods based on orange-fleshed sweet potato (OFSP) and cream-fleshed sweet potato (CFSP), maize-soybean-groundnut (Weanimix), and a proprietary wheat-based infant cereal (Nestlé Cerelac) were assessed using the Codex Standard (CODEX STAN 074-1981, Rev. 1-2006) specification as a reference. Additionally, the costs of OFS

Determination of total iodine in infant formula and nutritional products by inductively coupled plasma/mass spectrometry: single-laboratory validation.

A single-laboratory validation by inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry was developed for the determination total iodine (m/z 127) in infant formula and adult nutritional products. All samples were digested in nitric acid using a closed vessel microwave oven system; Te (m/z 130) was used as an internal standard. To prevent loss of iodine, ammonium hydroxide solution was added to the samples immediately after digestion. The method quantitation limit for total iodine was 0.3 ng/mL, but a practical LOQ was used at 1.0 ng/mL, a concentration at which there was a negligible bias due to nonli

Food-Based Strategies for Stunting: A Scoping Review of Functional Ready-to-Eat and Ready-to-Cook Foods.

Stunting, a chronic form of malnutrition characterised by impaired linear growth, remains a significant global public health concern. While supplementation programmes have shown potential to improve growth outcomes, long-term implementation may be constrained by poor adherence, high costs and limited sustainability. Increasing reliance on ready-to-eat (RTE) and ready-to-cook (RTC) foods in low- and middle-income countries highlights the potential of nutrient-dense food-based approaches that align with existing dietary practices. This scoping review aimed to map and synthesise existing evidence

Diagnosis and management of Non-IgE gastrointestinal allergies in breastfed infants-An EAACI Position Paper.

It is well-established that food proteins, such as egg, soya, cow's milk and wheat, are detectable in breastmilk for many hours or days after ingestion. Exposure to these proteins is important to the process of developing tolerance but can also sometimes elicit IgE-mediated and non-IgE-mediated allergic symptoms in breastfed infants. Non-IgE-mediated allergy, outside of food protein-induced allergic proctocolitis and eosinophilic oesophagitis, is not well understood, leading to variations in the diagnosis and management thereof. A primary objective of the European Academy for Allergy and Clini

Plant-food components at the microbiota-neuroinflammation interface: human evidence, translational limits, and sustainable dietary translation.

This narrative review evaluates how convincingly plant-food components and plant-rich dietary patterns influence neuroinflammation and whether those mechanisms translate into neurological benefit. Infection is treated as one possible initiating exposure, neuroinflammation as a context-dependent mechanism, and neurological complications as clinical outcomes. Targeted literature searches and reference verification prioritized original human trials, mechanistic studies and balanced evidence syntheses. The most coherent pathways are modulation of microglial inflammatory signaling, including NLRP3-

Review on Gelling and Foaming Agents in Food: Mechanism and Applications.

Food texture and structural stability are critical determinants of consumer acceptance and overall product quality in the food industry. This review provides a comprehensive synthesis of gelling and foaming mechanisms, focusing on traditional hydrocolloids (pectin and gelatin) alongside emerging plant-based alternatives, such as aquafaba (chickpea cooking water). For gelling systems, we examine the molecular networks driving matrix formation, highlighting how processing variables and natural source variability complicate texture control in clean-label formulations. For foaming systems, the mec

A Specialized Multinutrient Formula Attenuates High-Fat-Diet-Associated Muscle Dysfunction and Sarcopenic Obesity-Related Features in Adult Mice.

Background/Objectives: Sarcopenia is an age-associated skeletal muscle disorder that may be aggravated by a high-fat diet (HFD). Given the multifactorial pathogenesis of sarcopenia, single-nutrient interventions may be insufficient. This study investigated whether a specialized multinutrient formula could attenuate muscle dysfunction and intramuscular lipid accumulation in adult mice under standard-diet and HFD-fed conditions. Methods: Male C57BL/6J mice were assigned to five groups: young control (YC), adult control (OC), adult control supplemented with the nutritional formula (OCN), adult HF

The impact of low-energy, partially hydrolysed enteral formula on gastrointestinal symptoms and weight in children with neurological impairment: a multicentre retrospective study.

BACKGROUND: Neurological impairment (NI) relates to disorders of the central nervous system. The specific aetiology of NI varies but includes genetic, congenital abnormalities or brain injury. In children with severe NI, feeding impairments can lead to undernutrition, and some children require a feeding tube. Although tube feeding improves overall nutritional status, it has also been associated with excess body fat. Commercially available enteral formulas that are low in energy, hydrolysed and nutritionally adequate for protein and micronutrients are available to mitigate gastrointestinal symp
