Persistent Food Insecurity and Material Hardships: A Latent Class Analysis of Experiences among Venezuelan Refugees and Migrants in Urban Colombia.

The causes and conditions of displacement often increase the vulnerability of migrant and refugee populations to food insecurity, alongside other material hardships. We aimed to examine the multidimensional aspects and patterns of food insecurity and other material hardships in a cross-sectional sample of 6221 Venezuelan refugees and migrants in urban Colombia using a latent class analysis. Using multinomial and logistic regression models, we investigated the demographic and migratory experiences associated with identified classes and how class membership is associated with multiple health out…

Mediating Role of Depression and Anxiety in the Association Between Food Insecurity and Delayed TB Treatment in Botswana: A Cross-Sectional Study.

BACKGROUND: Delayed TB treatment remains a major challenge to tuberculosis (TB) control in low- and middle-income countries, where it contributes to prolonged infection, higher costs, and increased drug resistance. Food insecurity is an important determinant of health among people with TB and may contribute to delayed treatment through economic, physical, and psychosocial pathways. Depression and anxiety have also been associated with both food insecurity and delayed TB treatment, suggesting that they may mediate this relationship. This study examined the association between food insecurity an…

Health-related social needs and distress in cancer patients and survivors: A global scoping review of food, housing, and transportation insecurity.

BACKGROUND: Health-related social needs (HRSNs) such as food insecurity, housing instability, and transportation barriers affect cancer outcomes, yet their relationship with patient distress remains unclear. This scoping review evaluates how these HRSNs contribute to psychological, emotional, and psychosocial distress among cancer patients and survivors. METHODS: Six databases (Medline, Embase, PsycInfo, CINAHL, Cochrane Central, Sociological Abstracts) were searched. Of 840 screened records, 11 studies (2010-2024) from the United States (7), Australia (2), Mexico (1), and the United Kingdom …

Different Hunger Experiences for Parents and Their Children in a family: Long-Term Food Insecurity, Parental Psychological Distress, and Harsh Parenting.

Evidence shows that physical violence and verbal aggression toward children is more prevalent in food-insecure families than food-secure families. However, less is known whether such associations are valid when considering food insecurity could be a long-term phenomenon and also different between parents and children. Using the Panel Study of Income Dynamics, results based on latent class analysis and mediation analysis showed that the use of scolding is lowest among families where children experience consistently low food insecurity over time. However, this pattern does not extend to spanking…

Protocol for the sequential multiple assignment randomized trial to reduce food insecurity and improve adherence in patients with hypertension (SMART-FI).

BACKGROUND: Food insecurity is a barrier to patients adhering to prescribed hypertension treatments and is strongly associated with worse blood pressure. Health systems are implementing interventions to assist patients with food insecurity, but rather than providing a single intervention, a stepped-care approach to providing interventions could be a more effective strategy. Our objective is to determine the effectiveness of a stepped-care food insecurity intervention on blood pressure and adherence among patients with uncontrolled hypertension. METHODS/DESIGN: We will conduct a sequential mul…

Association of Social Support with Diabetes-Related Outcomes for Adults with and without Food Insecurity at an Urban Federally Qualified Health Center.

Food insecurity is associated with adverse outcomes in adults with type 2 diabetes (T2DM). The impact of social support on this relationship is unknown. We used cross-sectional data from primarily Latino/a adults with T2DM in a social support program and low-resource setting to assess the association of food insecurity and social support with diabetes-related outcomes. Of 222 participants, 45% had food insecurity. Higher social support was associated with lower odds of food insecurity. In multivariable models, food insecurity was associated with higher hemoglobin A1c and diabetes distress. Soc…

A "food insecurity poverty line" to replace the official threshold in Canadian rural and urban settings? A single-person household perspective.

Household food insecurity is associated with both low income and high cost of living, it is a potentially better measure for consumption compared to income. We use data on food insecurity and income from 10 years of the Canadian Community Health Survey (2007-2017) of single-person households (n = 145,044) to estimate the probability of being food insecure at the Canadian poverty thresholds (Market Basket Measure thresholds, or MBMs), and determine the income required to reach that probability in each MBM region, aggregated by province and rural/urban status. A regression model shows the probab…
