Food-related exploration across the menstrual cycle.

When deciding what to eat we constantly weigh different aspects of the options at hand and make trade-offs between exploiting opportunities … ing estradiol and progesterone) to exploratory behavior. Previous work in humans has suggested that food preferences and food intake also change over the menstrual cycle. However, it remains unknown whether exploratory behavior in food choices also changes across the menstrual phases in humans. In a rating phase, 112 adult women (age range 18-45 years) on or off h …

Government extension, social support and farmers' response to climate-adaptive technologies: Insights from a discrete choice experiment.

Climate change poses substantial challenges to agricultural production systems and rural livelihoods. Leveraging agricultural extension programs to promote climate-adaptive technologies is an important pathway to enhancing agricultural resilience and ensuring food security. However, how government extension services, social support mechanisms, and economic incentives jointly shape farmers' preferences for climate-adaptive technologies remains insufficiently understood. Based on survey data from 1,547 farm households in the main maize-producing region of Liaoning Province in China, this study e

Chrononutrition: exploring determinants and feature importance of eating timing among Brazilian adults.

Our study aimed to explore factors influencing the timing of food intake, including physiological, behavioral, personal preferences, cultural, and environmental dynamics. Using data from 5,260 Brazilian adults collected through a virtual, exploratory, population-based survey (Sonar-Brazil/2023-24), Lasso regression identified the determinants of the timing of the first and last food intake, lunch, eating midpoint, and weekly breakfast skipping. Random Forest analysis was used to assess the feature importance for the eating midpoint. Chronotype emerged as the primary predictor across all outcom

Adolescent-Selected Food Intake and Engagement with the External Food Environment Contribute to Unhealthy Diets in Accra, Ghana.

BACKGROUND: As adolescents gain autonomy, they interact more independently with their food environments, increasing their vulnerability to rapidly changing and often unhealthy food environments. In Accra, Ghana, unhealthy foods and beverages are widely available and heavily marketed. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to assess the healthiness and nutrient adequacy of adolescents' diets in Accra and to examine whether diet healthiness is associated with independent adolescent food selection and their engagement with home, school, and outlet food environments. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectiona

Vitamin D Fortification and Its Effect on Athletes' Physical Improvement: A Mini Review.

Poor vitamin D status is a widespread problem regardless of age and sex, emphasizing the necessity of new food sources to improve vitamin D levels. Currently, approximately 60% of dietary vitamin D consumption occurs via fortified foods. Vitamin D insufficiency (50-90%) is widespread according to age and region, despite different levels of sunlight exposure. The food industry must identify more effective strategies to increase normal dietary vitamin D intake and improve overall health. Strategies for vitamin D fortification include bioaddition, wherein a vitamin D-rich food source is added to

The application of Bayesian hierarchical models to quantify individual diet specialization.

Intraspecific variation in ecologically relevant traits is widespread. In generalist predators in particular, individual diet specialization is likely to have important consequences for food webs. Understanding individual diet specialization empirically requires the ability to quantify individual diet preferences accurately. Here we compare the currently used frequentist maximum likelihood approach, which infers individual preferences using the observed prey proportions to Bayesian hierarchical models that instead estimate these proportions. Using simulated and empirical data, we find that the

Drinking preferences in chinchillas (Chinchilla laniger), degus (Octodon degu) and guinea pigs (Cavia porcellus).

Chinchilla (Chinchilla laniger), degus (Octodon degus) and guinea pigs (Cavia porcellus) are South American rodents living in a semi-arid habitat with varying, species-specific adaptations to water deprivation. Nonetheless, several diseases have been linked to insufficient water intake when these species are kept as pets, such as urolithiasis or obstipation. This study evaluated preferences for drinking systems. Six animals of each species were given a choice between an open dish and a nipple drinker. Food intake and water intake were measured daily for 13 days. Chinchillas in this study had s

Hungry pigeons make suboptimal choices, less hungry pigeons do not.

Hungry animals will often choose suboptimally by being attracted to reliable signals for food that occur infrequently (they gamble) over less reliable signals for food that occur more often. That is, pigeons prefer an option that 50 % of the time provides them with a reliable signal for the appearance of food but 50 % of the time provides them with a reliable signal for the absence of food (overall 50 % reinforcement) over an alternative that always provides them with a signal for the appearance of food 75 % of the time (overall 75 % reinforcement). The pigeons appear to choose impulsively for

Ergonomics study on the handle length and lift angle for the culinary spatula.

The culinary spatula (turning shovel) is one of the most common cooking tools used in the kitchen in Asia. However, the culinary spatula has seldom been ergonomically investigated. When a person uses a spatula to cook food, the operations involve repetitive bent-wrist motions, such as dorsiflexion, palmary flexion, and radial and ulnar deviations. These movements may cause cumulative trauma disorders in the upper extremities, and in particular carpal tunnel syndrome. A poorly designed culinary spatula will be ergonomically inefficient and cause injury to the hand and wrist. The purpose of this

Relative preferences for edible and leisure stimuli in children with autism: A replication in Italy.

Several studies have found that edible items tend to displace leisure items in multiple-stimulus preference assessments for individuals with developmental disabilities. One recent study (Conine & Vollmer, 2019) included screen-based technology devices in assessments and found that food items were less likely to displace leisure items and in some cases leisure items totally displaced edible items. The purpose of our study was to conduct a replication of Conine and Vollmer in Italy to evaluate cultural differences in food and leisure preferences. Results of our study were similar: For 44% of par

[Food intake regulation - 2nd part].

The review article summarizes the principles of hedonic regulation of food intake which represents the food intake independent on the maintenance of homeostasis. The theory describing hedonic regulation, so called Incentive Salience Theory, comprises three major processes: liking (positive attribution to food stimulus), wanting (motivation to gain it) and learning (identification of these stimuli and distinguishing them from those connected with aversive reaction). Neuronal reward circuits are the anatomical and functional substrates of hedonic regulation. They react to gustatory and olfactory

Association of sweet taste perception and dietary habits with body mass index among public school children of Belagavi district, South India.

BACKGROUND: Healthy diet is significant for growth, development, and prevention from dietary related diseases in children and adults. Dietary imbalance can lead to many general and oral diseases and sugar rich diet can affect the teeth at an early age and continues towards adolescence causing several oral problems such as dental caries. Frequent consumption of a certain food causes changes in taste perception and leads to preference for that food. Taste perception may also be affected by several environmental, cultural, and genetic factors and has been found to be linked to oral health and bod

Child consumer-centered co-creation for the development of healthy dairy products: Comparative insights from diabetic and non-diabetic children.

Co-creation has gained relevance as a participatory strategy in food innovation; however, important gaps remain in child-centered applications. First, there is limited evidence on how co-creation processes perform when involving children from different health and dietary contexts, such as those with and without type 1 Diabetes mellitus (DM1). Second, studies integrating visual projective techniques such as Free Drawing into the co-creation process to systematically capture children's implicit perceptions and habitual food consumption are lacking. Third, it remains unclear whether children's pa

Separate orexigenic hippocampal ensembles shape dietary choice by enhancing contextual memory and motivation.

The hippocampus (HPC) has emerged as a critical player in the control of food intake, beyond its well-known role in memory. While previous studies have primarily associated the HPC with food intake inhibition, recent research suggests a role in appetitive processes. Here we identified spatially distinct neuronal populations within the dorsal HPC (dHPC) that respond to either fats or sugars, potent natural reinforcers that contribute to obesity development. Using activity-dependent genetic capture of nutrient-responsive dHPC neurons, we demonstrate a causal role of both populations in promoting

Substituting corn silage with reconstituted forage or nonforage fiber sources in the starter feed diets of Holstein calves: Effects on intake, meal pattern, sorting, and health.

We examined the effect of replacing corn silage (CS) with reconstituted alfalfa hay (RAH) or reconstituted beet pulp (RBP) in the starter diets on feeding behavior, sorting, and health criteria using 54 neonatal female Holstein calves that were assigned randomly to 3 groups receiving starter diets containing CS (10% on a dry matter basis), RAH, or RBP. The starter diets had the same nutrient composition and moisture level but differed in particle size distribution. Calves fed CS tended to have a lower intermeal interval compared with calves fed RAH before weaning; however, meal frequency and d

Evaluating anhedonia in the activity-based anorexia (ABA) rat model.

Patients suffering anorexia nervosa (AN) become anhedonic, in other words, unable or unwilling to derive normal pleasures and avoid rewarding outcomes, most profoundly in food intake. The neurobiological underpinnings of anhedonia are likely to involve mesolimbic reward circuitry. We propose here that this circuitry and its involvement in AN can be investigated using the activity-based anorexia (ABA) rodent model that recapitulates many of the characteristics of the human condition, most notably rapid weight loss. Preference for sweetened water was used to assay hedonic processing in female Sp

Behaviour of European badgers and non-target species towards candidate baits for oral delivery of a tuberculosis vaccine.

In the UK and the Republic of Ireland, the European badger (Meles meles) is a maintenance host for Mycobacterium bovis, and may transmit the infection to cattle causing bovine tuberculosis (TB). Vaccination of badgers using an injectable Bacillus Calmette-Guerin (BCG) vaccine is undertaken in some areas of the UK with the intention of interrupting this transmission, and vaccination research is underway in Ireland. An oral badger TB vaccine is also under development. We investigated the behaviour of badgers and non-target wildlife species towards three candidate baits being considered for deliv

Sweet/dessert foods are more appealing to adolescents after sleep restriction.

STUDY OBJECTIVE: Examine the effect of experimental sleep restriction (SR) on adolescents' subjective hunger and perceived appeal of sweet/dessert foods versus other foods. A secondary goal was to replicate previous findings on the effects of SR on dietary intake. DESIGN: Randomized cross-over sleep restriction-extension paradigm. SETTING: Sleep was obtained and monitored at home. Outcome measures were gathered during office visits. PARTICIPANTS: 31 typically-developing adolescents aged 14-17 years. INTERVENTIONS: The three-week protocol consisted of a baseline week, followed randomly by f

Food choice in disorders of eating behavior: correlations with the psychopathological aspects of the diseases.

Eating disorders (ED) are characterized by alterations in food choice and in the quantity and quality of nutrient intake. In a population of 124 female patients with ED (anorexia nervosa restricting subtype [AN-R, n=37]; AN bingeing-purging subtype [AN-BP, n=18]; bulimia nervosa purging subtype [BN-P, n=40]; and binge eating disorder [BED, n=29]) and healthy age-matched controls ([C], n=20) we compared food choice and macronutrient intake with psychopathologic symptoms of the disorders. Data were collected from the probands' 7-day food diaries and the scores from two assessment scales (Eating
