Multiple Abdominal Wall Chronic Discharging Sinuses With Prolene Granuloma: A Case Report.

This case report details a rare instance of multiple chronic discharging abdominal wall sinuses associated with Prolene granuloma in a 35-year-old woman following a caesarean section. Abdominal wall sinuses, though uncommon, can arise as complications after surgery, often due to foreign body reactions to materials such as non-absorbable sutures. Prolene granuloma, a rare inflammatory response to Prolene sutures, can manifest as painful masses or discharging sinuses long after surgery. In this case, the patient developed a ruptured blister at the Pfannenstiel scar, progressing to an ulcer and m

Breast filler granuloma mistaken for implant rupture: A case report.

RATIONALE: Breast augmentation is usually performed by inserting implants into the breasts. However, injectable fillers are sometimes used for the convenience of both patients and surgeons. If foreign substances, such as biomaterials, are injected into the body, complications such as inflammation, granuloma, and tissue necrosis can occur owing to foreign body reactions. PATIENT CONCERNS: A 39-year-old female patient visited our hospital complaining of tenderness, redness, and swelling in both breasts. The patient had undergone bilateral breast augmentation using implants 4 years prior to curr

Elusive Differential of a Painful Unstable Total Knee Arthroplasty - Metal on Cement Disease.

Particle disease from the release of metal, cement, ceramic, or polyethylene particles is a rare condition in total knee replacement. Wear, fracture, or corrosion of the components leads to foreign body reaction in the joint, followed by pain, swelling, limited motion, difficulty in walking, functional disability, and occasional systemic disease. This paper presents two cases of metal-on-cement disease as an etiology for the implant failure wherein the metal particles were shed off from the implant, along with cement and polyethylene particles, leading to a complex foreign body reaction in the

Ambulatory surgery for pilonidal disease.

In conclusion, pilonidal cysts, sinuses, and abscesses appear to be acquired lesions, perhaps enhanced by the developmental presence of deep intergluteal clefts, dimples, or sinuses. The pahtophysiology depends upon physical invasion of hair, lint, and other foreign material into the subcutaneum and the formation of a foreign body reaction. Appropriate treatment is drainage of the infected cavity and removal of foreign material. Adherence to basic principles of treating surgical infection is necessary for a good result. Prevention of treatment failure demands a conscious attention by the patie

Two Teflon granulomas of the nasopharynx and paravertebral space mimicking a neoplasm.

Teflon has been proved to be able to extravasate and infiltrate into soft tissue to form an inflammatory giant-cell foreign-body reaction, a so-called Teflon granuloma. We present a rare case report of a patient with two Teflon granulomas of the head and neck, who were first interpreted as a neoplasm.

Chromomycosis. The association of fungal elements and wood splinters.

In two separate specimens received for histopathologic examination, pigmented fungal elements were found within or on embedded wood splinters associated with a foreign-body reaction. The fungus was found to be in direct contact with the surrounding dermis. These findings support the concept of inoculation as a pathogenetic mechanism in cutaneous chromomycosis.

Topical over Dermal Versus Transdermal Application of Cyanoacrylate in Wound Synthesis and Its Effects on Healing-Experimental Study.

Cyanoacrylate-based adhesives are commonly used for wound closure due to their short synthesis time, aesthetic outcomes, and minimal discomfort. However, reported adverse effects include the release of cytotoxic metabolites, inflammation, and foreign body reactions. This study evaluated and compared the effectiveness of three cyanoacrylate-based adhesives for skin incision closure in Rattus norvegicus. The subjects were divided into three groups based on the type of monomer: G1 (n-2-ethyl-cyanoacrylate), G2 (n-2-butyl-cyanoacrylate), and G3 (n-2-octyl-cyanoacrylate). Each animal received two 2

Biocompatibility and degradation comparisons of four biodegradable copolymeric osteosynthesis systems used in maxillofacial surgery: A goat model with four years follow-up.

Applying biodegradable osteosyntheses avoids the disadvantages of titanium osteosyntheses. However, foreign-body reactions remain a major concern and evidence of complete resorption is lacking. This study compared the physico-chemical properties, histological response and radiographs of four copolymeric biodegradable osteosynthesis systems in a goat model with 48-months follow-up. The systems were implanted subperiosteally in both tibia and radius of 12 Dutch White goats. Expression of the proteinase specialized in bone resorption, cathepsin K, in granulomatous inflammation.

BACKGROUND: The cysteine proteinase cathepsin K has aroused intense interest as the main effector in the digestion of extracellular matrix during bone resorption by osteoclasts. The enzyme is not a housekeeping lysosomal hydrolase, but is instead expressed with striking specificity in osteoclasts. In this work, we present evidence for the association of cathepsin K with the granulomatous reaction. Granulomas are inflammatory tissue reactions against persistent pathogens or foreign bodies. We came across cathepsin K while working on Echinococcus granulosus, a persistent tissue-dwelling, cyst-fo

Role of CT-guided core needle biopsy in the diagnosis of a gossypiboma: case report.

A 66-year-old woman with previous hysterectomy had dysuria and vaginal spotting for 1 month. Computed tomography showed a heterogeneous presacral mass with eccentric calcification. Biopsies of the bladder and vagina and transrectal biopsy of the pelvic mass yielded only inflammation. T2-weighted magnetic resonance images revealed a heterogeneous mass with wavy hypointensities. Computed tomographically guided biopsy targeting at the calcified area disclosed thread-like materials, thus confirming the diagnosis of gossypiboma.

Tarantula keratouveitis.

PURPOSE: To report a case of chronic bilateral keratouveitis, which was initiated after contact with a pet tarantula. METHODS: A 16-year-old male presented with a photophobia and redness of his eyes two days after handling a tarantula. He was found to have a number of linear corneal foreign bodies with subepithelial infiltrates. The infiltrates were found at varying levels of the corneal stroma with deposits on the endothelium. The anterior chamber had a mild cellular reaction. RESULTS: He was treated with topical steroid drops, which made him asymptomatic. However, he continued to have a mi

Video-assisted thoracoscopic lobectomy for a migrated duck bone foreign body complicated by severe peribronchial inflammation: a case report.

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Foreign body aspiration (FBA) in adults presents diagnostic challenges, particularly in patients with communication barriers. Delayed diagnosis can lead to severe complications, including recurrent pneumonia and bronchiectasis. While bronchoscopy is the first-line treatment, surgical intervention becomes necessary when extensive inflammation precludes safe endoscopic retrieval. CASE PRESENTATION: A 56-year-old male with a long-standing psychiatric disorder (schizophrenia) presented with an 8-month history of refractory respiratory symptoms. Chest computed tomograp

Large cell lymphoma associated with prosthetic joint debris.

Soft tissue reactions to materials in joint prostheses include discoloration, fibrosis, florid histiocytic reaction, and granulomatous inflammation with foreign body giant cell reaction. Clinical manifestations include pain and swelling. We report a case of temporomandibular joint Proplast-Teflon prosthesis, followed by the development of large cell lymphoma in the left parotid gland 10 years after joint replacement. While it is unclear whether the implant directly contributed to the development of lymphoma, this association has not been previously documented, prompting this report.

Arthroscopic treatment of gunshot wounds to the shoulder.

Two cases are presented that demonstrate the utility of arthroscopic intervention for the management of gunshot wounds to the shoulder. The first report involves a 24-year-old man with a retained bullet in his glenohumeral joint after a drive-by shooting The intra-articular bullet was retrieved arthroscopically avoiding chondral injury from the mechanical effects of a loose body as well as the potential local and systemic effects of lead toxicity. Irrigation and debridement was performed to evacuate joint debris, which could have served as a nidus for infection or inflammation. The other case

Altered Foreign Body Response at the Posterior Surface Compared to the Anterior Surface of Human Silicone Breast Implants.

Soft implantable devices are crucial to optimizing form and function for many patients. However, periprosthetic capsule fibrosis is one of the major challenges limiting the use of implants. Currently, little is understood about how spatial and temporal factors influence capsule physiology and how the local capsule environment affects the implant structure. In this work, we analyzed breast implant capsule specimens with staining, immunohistochemistry, and real-time polymerase chain reaction to investigate spatiotemporal differences in inflammation and fibrosis. We demonstrated that in compariso

Inert 37-Year-Old Intrastromal Corneal Graphite From Penetrating Ocular Trauma: A Case Report.

Ocular trauma is the most frequent cause of monocular blindness. Ocular surface injury is the commonest among ocular injuries. Corneal abrasion and foreign body are the most common corneal injuries. A 40-year-old dentist with a history of partially penetrating corneal injury due to a pencil presented with and retained graphite bodies in the cornea 37 years after injury. His refraction was +1.0 sphere with no astigmatic error. There was no evidence of any inflammatory reaction. Intrastromal corneal graphite particles can be inert and cause no inflammatory reaction or astigmatic error even decad

Chitosan-Based Materials for Peripheral Nerve Repair-New Pre-Clinical Data on Degradation Behavior at the Nerve Repair Site and Critical Opinion on Their Translational Impact.

Before clinical approval of chitosan nerve conduits (CNCs) less than 10 years ago, substantial material degradation was not reported from pre-clinical research. The current study investigated the biodegradation of two different CNC variants in the median nerve model. In adult rats, 10 mm long CNCs were secured covering end-to-end repair sites. After 2, 6, 12, and 18 months, the implantation sites were inspected, and samples harvested. Histology was performed in order to analyze local immune response or foreign body tissue reaction around the devices or within nerve samples. Further, the number
