Run Chang Tong Mi tea alleviates functional constipation through regulating gut microbiota and SCF/c-kit pathway.

BACKGROUND: Functional constipation (FC) is a gastrointestinal motility disorder related to intestinal transit function and hormonal imbalance and has been reported to be associated with an imbalance in the gut microbiota. Clinically, Run Chang Tong Mi tea (RCTM) can effectively alleviate the constipation symptoms of patients with FC. However, the mechanism by which RCTM improves FC and its regulation of intestinal homeostasis remain unclear. PURPOSE: This study aims to investigate the potential mechanism of RCTM alleviates FC by improving intestinal motility and mucosal secretion function th

Psychosocial aspects of functional gastrointestinal disorders.

Increased numbers of psychiatric diagnoses and increased levels of psychological distress are seen in the majority of medical clinic patients with gastrointestinal motility disorders. In IBS, psychological symptoms are believed to be comorbid conditions, which do not cause the motility disorder but which do influence the patient's decision to consult a physician. In functional dyspepsia, psychological symptoms are present in many patients, but their role is not known; the available data suggest that psychological symptoms do not predict which patients will consult a physician. Among constipate

Alvimopan, a selective peripherally acting mu-opioid antagonist.

Alvimopan is a novel, peripherally acting mu-opioid antagonist that is being developed for the management of acute postoperative ileus and for the reversal of the delayed gastrointestinal and colonic transit that result in symptoms such as constipation, nausea and motility disorders in patients treated with opiate analgesics. There is a clinical need for effective medications for the treatment of postoperative ileus and opiate-induced constipation and other motility disorders. This review addresses the basic and applied pharmacology and current evidence for the use of the medication, alvimopan

Slow Transit Constipation: Pathophysiological Perspectives and Management Updates.

Slow transit constipation (STC) is a chronic colonic motility disorder characterized by markedly delayed transit, leading to reduced bowel movements, abdominal discomfort, and significant quality-of-life impairment. It predominantly affects women and is associated with abnormalities in enteric neuronal signaling, smooth muscle contractility, interstitial cells of Cajal, gut peptides, bile acid homeostasis, and autonomic regulation. Secondary causes of constipation and structural lesions must be excluded before the diagnosis of STC, with colonic transit studies serving as the gold standard. Com

[Surgical treatment for slow transit constipation: total colectomy and subtotal colectomy].

Although the surgical treatment of slow transit constipation (STC) has been around for over a century, the choice of surgical method is still controversial. Specifically, the two most widely used operations in the world are total colectomy ileorectostomy (TC-IRA) and subtotal colectomy. Subtotal colectomy offers many methods for anastomosis, including ileocecal and cecorectal anastomoses and so on. Cecorectal anastomosis can be divided into two types: isoperistaltic anastomosis and antiperistaltic anastomosis. It is generally believed that total colectomy provides definitive effects but result

Gastrointestinal motility disorders in patients with anorexia nervosa - a review of the literature.

Anorexia nervosa is a disease carrying havoc on many levels of the body functioning. The presence of numerous somatic complications as a consequence of starvation is an important part of the clinical picture of this disease. Symptoms of the gastrointestinal tract are one of the most common complaints reported by patients, especially in the initial period of realimentation. Most common symptoms are associated with gastrointestinal motility disorders. The available data show that as many as half of patients suffering from anorexia nervosa manifest significant gastrointestinal motility disorders

Hypokinetic Activity of Menthofuran on the Gastrointestinal Tract in Rodents.

The acute toxicity and hypokinetic activity induced by menthofuran on the gastrointestinal tract of rodents were investigated in the present study. An absence of acute toxicity was observed. Menthofuran delayed gastric emptying at oral doses of 25, 50, and 100 mg/kg in the experimental model of phenol red, as well as it reduced the intestinal transit at oral doses of 50 and 100 mg/kg. Interestingly, a scopolamine-similar hypokinetic effect was observed for menthofuran. In the experimental model of castor oil-induced intestinal hypermotility, menthofuran (50 and 100 mg/kg) reduced the number of

Radiographic appearance of canine parvovirus enteritis.

Sixty dogs with serologically proved parvovirus infection were radiographically evaluated for signs of gastrointestinal disease. Patient grouping was based on duration of illness, which correlated generally with severity of clinical signs. Early in the disease, the radiographic appearance usually was normal. As the disease progressed, abnormal gas and fluid distention of the small bowel became evident. Contrast radiographic findings usually were normal early in the disease but became abnormal as the disease progressed. Vomiting of the contrast agent, delayed gastrointestinal transit time, floc…

Scintigraphy Demonstrates High Rate of False-positive Results From Glucose Breath Tests for Small Bowel Bacterial Overgrowth.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Breath tests for hydrogen and/or methane are used to detect small bowel bacterial overgrowth (SBBO), but false-positive results can arise from clinical conditions that accelerate small bowel transit and deliver unabsorbed glucose to the colon. We investigated the prevalence of false-positive results from glucose breath tests by also evaluating patients with scintigraphy. METHODS: In a retrospective study, we reviewed data from glucose breath tests performed with concurrent scintigraphy on 139 patients with suspected SBBO at the Medical College of Wisconsin from January 2003

Accelerometric Assessment of Gastric Contractility Using the Atmo Wireless Motility Capsule.

BACKGROUND: Patients with gastric dysmotility exhibit abnormal transit and reduced contractility, for which quantification is limited with current methodologies. The Atmo Capsule is a wireless motility capsule that measures regional gastrointestinal transit. We tested its technical capabilities to evaluate gastric contractility by detecting changes in capsule acceleration during transit. METHODS: Data from 91 healthy controls and 182 patients with suspected dysmotility who ingested the Atmo Capsule following a standardized protocol were included. Gastric emptying times (GET) ≥ 5 h were consid…

Shortcoming of the Mouse Model of Postoperative Ileus: Small Intestinal Lengths Have Similar Variations in In- and Outbred Mice and Cannot Be Predicted by Allometric Parameters.

Background/Objectives: The mouse model of postoperative ileus separates the gastrointestinal tract into 15 sections, 10 of which are in the small intestine, to measure intestinal transit time. Usually, mice are standardised according to age or body weight. This inherently assumes that intestinal lengths are similar among the included mice irrespective of the method of standardisation. We aimed to test this assumption by comparing intestinal lengths, measuring their variability in commonly used out- and inbred strains. Methods: Mice were humanely killed, and their intestines were removed and me

Antivinculin Antibodies in Systemic Sclerosis: Associations With Slow Gastric Transit and Extraintestinal Clinical Phenotype.

OBJECTIVE: The gastrointestinal (GI) tract is commonly affected in systemic sclerosis (SSc). A positive association between antivinculin antibody levels and GI symptom severity is reported in SSc. We sought to examine whether antivinculin antibodies associate with measures of GI dysmotility and extraintestinal clinical phenotype in SSc. METHODS: A total of 88 well-characterized patients with SSc and GI disease were assayed for antivinculin antibodies by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Whole-gut scintigraphy, GI symptom scores, and clinical features of SSc were compared between patients wit

Gastric emptying, mouth-to-cecum transit, and glycemic, insulin, incretin, and energy intake responses to a mixed-nutrient liquid in lean, overweight, and obese males.

Observations relating to the impact of obesity on gastric emptying (GE) and the secretion of gut hormones are inconsistent, probably because of a lack of studies in which GE, gastrointestinal hormone release, and energy intake (EI) have been evaluated concurrently with previous patterns of nutrient intake. GE is known to be a major determinant of postprandial glycemia and incretin secretion in health and type 2 diabetes. The aims of this study were to determine the effects of a mixed-nutrient drink on GE, oro-cecal transit, blood glucose, insulin and incretin concentrations and EI, and the rel
