A 52-year-old woman was admitted because of epigastralgia, anorexia and recently increased vomiting, 2 years after silastic ring vertical gastroplasty. On gastroscopy, a tumor mass was visualized in the pouch near the "neo-pylorus". Biopsies confirmed adenocarcinoma. She underwent total gastrectomy, and has no evidence of recurrence at 1 year. The literature on gastric carcinoma after gastroplasty is reviewed.

A 3 1/2 year old boy presented with a history of vomiting and generalized oedema. Biochemically proven protein losing enteropathy was associated with huge gastric fundal rugae on barium examination. Gastroscopy confirmed the barium findings but biopsy material demonstrated normal mucosa. The condition regressed on a high protein diet. AIM: To audit the results of a nurse-led dyspepsia clinic.
METHODS: Referrals to the Gastroenterology Department at Auckland Hospital for gastroscopy were assessed in a dyspepsia clinic. Initial evaluation included consultation and a urea breath test (UBT). Patients given eradication treatment prior to initial clinic assessment were excluded. Patients with a positive UBT were given eradication treatment and were reviewed two months later for symptom assessment and follow-up UBT.
