Risk factors for violence among long-stay psychiatric patients: national study.

This study identified risk factors for violence among long-stay (1 year or more) psychiatric patients in Israel (n = 2946) using data from a national reevaluation of such patients. Patients were rated as being violent if hospital staff or patient charts indicated an incident of physical violence at least every few months. The relationship between violence and patients' functioning, living conditions, treatment, background and hospitalization history was studied. In total, 22.8% of patients were violent. Based on logistic regression analysis, the risk factors for being violent were younger age,

Violence against women and drug-facilitated sexual assault (DFSA): A review of the main drugs.

Sexual violence is a universal phenomenon without restriction to sex, age, ethnicity or social class that causes devastating effects in the physical and mental health spheres, in the short-term and long-term, such as pregnancy, sexually transmitted infections (STI) and greater susceptibility to psychiatric symptoms, especially depression. Some cases of sexual assault and rape are based on the use of so-called drug-facilitated sexual assault (DFSA), which cause victims' loss of consciousness and inability to defend, making them vulnerable to violence. Thus, this article aimed to review the lite

Normalization of abuse and barriers to reporting among adolescents and young people in settings of displacement in Nigeria.

BACKGROUND: Adolescence is a critical developmental stage marked by physical, psychological, and cognitive growth, increasing autonomy, social exploration, and risk-taking behaviors. However, these natural transitions in displacement settings are overshadowed by heightened vulnerabilities such as gender-based violence. In many displacement settings, recurrent exposure to violence leads to its acceptance as an unavoidable part of daily life. Sometimes, violence is normalized, leading to further exacerbation of the crisis. Our study explored the in-depth experiences and normalization of abuse an…

Gender-specific research on mental illness in the emergency department: current knowledge and future directions.

Mental illness is a growing, and largely unaddressed, problem for the population and for emergency department (ED) patients in particular. Extensive literature outlines sex and gender differences in mental illness' epidemiology and risk and protective factors. Few studies, however, examined sex and gender differences in screening, diagnosis, and management of mental illness in the ED setting. Our consensus group used the nominal group technique to outline major gaps in knowledge and research priorities for these areas, including the influence of violence and other risk factors on the course of

# Me Too: Global Progress in Tackling Continued Custodial Violence Against Women: The 10-Year Anniversary of the Bangkok Rules.

On any given day, almost 11 million people globally are deprived of their liberty. In 2020, the global female population was estimated to be 741,000, an increase of 105,000 since 2010. In order to investigate progress in the adoption of the Bangkok Rules since 2010, we conducted a legal realist assessment based on a global scoping exercise of empirical research and United Nations (UN) reporting, using detailed MESH terms across university and UN databases. We found evidences in 91 documents which directly relate to violations of the Bangkok Rules in 55 countries. By developing a realist accoun

Women's perspectives on female-initiated barrier methods for the prevention of HIV in the context of methamphetamine use and partner violence.

BACKGROUND: Female-initiated barrier methods for the prevention of HIV may be an effective alternative for drug-using women who are unable to negotiate safe sex, often as a result of physical and/or sexual partner violence. METHODS: Utilizing a SAVA (substance abuse, violence, and AIDS) syndemic framework, we qualitatively examined perspectives on female condoms and vaginal microbicides among 18 women with histories of methamphetamine abuse and partner violence in San Diego, California. FINDINGS: Most women were not interested in female condoms owing to perceived discomfort, difficulty of in

Economic violence to women and girls: is it receiving the necessary attention?

Most studies on gender-based violence (GBV) have focused on its physical, sexual, and psychological manifestations. This paper seeks to draw attention to the types of economic violence experienced by women, and describes its consequences on health and development. Economic violence experienced included limited access to funds and credit; controlling access to health care, employment, education, including agricultural resources; excluding from financial decision making; and discriminatory traditional laws on inheritance, property rights, and use of communal land. At work women experienced recei…

The DREAMS core package of interventions: A comprehensive approach to preventing HIV among adolescent girls and young women.

In sub-Saharan Africa, adolescent girls and young women (AGYW) are 5 to 14 times more likely to be infected with HIV than their male peers. Every day, more than 750 AGYW are infected with HIV. Many factors make girls and young women particularly vulnerable to HIV, including gender-based violence, exclusion from economic opportunities, and a lack of access to secondary school. The President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) is dedicating significant resources through the Determined, Resilient, Empowered, AIDS-free, Mentored, and Safe (DREAMS) partnership to impact the lives of women and…
