Iron (Fe) is an important trace element involved in many important plant physiological and metabolic processes such as photosynthesis, respiration and nitrogen metabolism. Plants maintain iron homeostasis through absorption, transporting, storage and redistribution of iron. Iron metabolism is strictly regulated in plants. Iron regulatory transcription factors and iron transporters constitute the regulatory network of plant iron absorption and transport in plants. Ferritin and iron transporter jointly regulate the response to excess iron in plants. In recent years, important progress has been m

As an important trait in crop breeding, plant height is associated with lodging resistance and yield. With the identification and cloning of several semi-dwarfing genes, increasing numbers of semi-dwarf cultivars have emerged, which has led to a 'green revolution' in rice (Oryza sativa) production. In this study, we identified a rice semi-dwarf mutant, semi-dwarf 38 (sd38), which showed significantly reduced cell length. SD38 encodes a fatty acid elongase, β-ketoacyl-CoA synthase, which is involved in the synthesis of very-long-chain fatty acids (VLCFAs). Expression analysis showed that SD38 w

BACKGROUND: Development of Pantana phyllostachysae, a moso bamboo pest, is affected by its diet. Understanding the mechanism underlying the different insect-resistant capacities of on- and off-year moso bamboo fed by P. phyllostachysae is crucial for managing pest outbreaks. As microbes were proven to influence plant immunity, we compared gut microbial communities of P. phyllostachysae with different diets by metabarcoding sequencing. By using sterilization assay, microbes were removed from leaf surfaces, and thus we confirmed that microbes inhabiting moso bamboo leaves impact the weight of P.

Shapes of vegetables and fruits are the result of adaptive evolution and human selection. Modules controlling organ shape have been identified. However, little is known about signals coordinating organ development and shape. Here, we describe the characterization of a melon mutation rf1, leading to round fruit. Histological analysis of rf1 flower and fruits revealed fruit shape is determined at flower stage 8, after sex determination and before flower fertilization. Using positional cloning, we identified the causal gene as the monoecy sex determination gene CmACS7, and survey of melon germpla

Salvia miltiorrhiza is a model plant for Chinese herbal medicine with significant pharmacologic effects due to its tanshinone components. Our previous study indicated that nitrogen starvation stress increased its tanshinone content. However, the molecular mechanism of this low nitrogen-induced tanshinone biosynthesis is still unclear. Thus, this study aimed to elucidate the molecular mechanism of tanshinone biosynthesis in S. miltiorrhiza under different N conditions [N-free (N0), low-N (Nl), and full-N (Nf, as control) conditions] by using transcriptome and metabolome analyses. Our results sh

BACKGROUND: Siraitia grosvenorii (Swingle) C. Jeffrey, also known as Luohanguo or monk fruit, is a famous traditional Chinese medicine ingredient with important medicinal value and broad development prospects. Diploid S. grosvenorii has too many seeds, which will increase the utilization cost of active ingredients. Thus, studying the molecular mechanism of seed abortion in triploid S. grosvenorii, identifying the abortion-related genes, and regulating their expression will be a new direction to obtain seedless S. grosvenorii. Herein, we examined the submicroscopic structure of triploid S. gros

Salvia miltiorrhiza is a traditional Chinese herbal medicine with tanshinone as one of the main bioactive components and has antitumor, antibacterial, anti-inflammatory properties, as well as other physiological functions. Tanshinone, as a secondary metabolite, is synthesized under salt stress or other environmental stresses. Oxidative stress is an important physiological response of plants to salt stress. Transcription factors (TFs) are believed to play regulatory roles in this process, and AP2/ERF TFs have significant effects on defense against the adversity of plants. However, investigation

Rice, wheat, corn, and potatoes are four crops that provide a daily source of nutrition for humans, but there are many problems that have been found with these crops. First, they lack amino acids and minerals which are necessary for balanced nutrition, and they also are grown very widely and as monocultures, which increases the risk of the human food system being destroyed by climate change. Thus, by introducing coarse cereals with good characteristics, we can enrich human food resources, realize agricultural diversification, improve dietary structure, and mitigate risks. In angiosperms, sex determination leads to development of unisexual flowers. In Cucumis melo, development of unisexual male flowers results from the expression of the sex determination gene, CmWIP1, in carpel primordia. To bring new insight on the molecular mechanisms through which CmWIP1 leads to carpel abortion in male flowers, we used the yeast two-hybrid approach to look for CmWIP1-interacting proteins. We found that CmWIP1 physically interacts with an S2 bZIP transcription factor, CmbZIP48. We further determined the region mediating the interaction and showed that it involves the N-termin

At least eight MGT genes were identified in citrus and PtrMGT5 plays important role in maintaining Mg homeostasis in citrus by getting involved in the Mg absorption and transport. Magnesium (Mg) is an essential macronutrient for plant growth and development, and the magnesium transporter (MGT) genes participate in mediate Mg2+ uptake, translocation and sequestration into cellular storage compartments. Although several MGT genes have been characterized in various plant species, a comprehensive analysis of the MGT gene family in citrus is still uncharacterized. In this study, eight PtrMGT genes

The present study provides new insights on the role of the potato (Solanum tuberosum) suberin feruloyl transferase FHT in native and wound tissues, leading to conclusions about hitherto unknown properties of the phellogen. In agreement with the enzymatic role of FHT, it is shown that its transcriptional activation and protein accumulation are specific to tissues that undergo suberization such as the root boundary layers of the exodermis and the endodermis, along with the tuber periderm. Remarkably, FHT expression and protein accumulation within the periderm is restricted to the phellogen deriv

BACKGROUND: Allopolyploid speciation requires rapid evolutionary reconciliation of two diverged genomes and gene regulatory networks. Here we describe global patterns of gene expression accompanying genomic merger and doubling in inter-specific crosses in the cotton genus (Gossypium L.).
RESULTS: Employing a micro-array platform designed against 40,430 unigenes, we assayed gene expression in two sets of parental diploids and their colchicine-doubled allopolyploid derivatives. Up to half of all genes were differentially expressed among diploids, a striking level of expression evolution among c

Cibotium barometz (L.) J. Sm., a medicinally significant fern in traditional Chinese medicine, is little explored at the genomic level regarding its bioactive compounds. Using an integrated approach combining Illumina and PacBio sequencing technologies, we profiled its root, rachis, and pinna transcriptomes, identifying 12,718, 21,341, and 11,441 unigenes, respectively. Our analysis systematically characterized the transcriptional features of transcription factors (TFs), simple sequence repeats (SSRs), long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs), and differentially expressed genes (DEGs). Enzymatic browning (EB) endangers the adaptation of apple fruit cultivars to new markets, affecting organoleptic properties and producing economic losses. Polyphenol oxidases and polyphenol compounds play a key role in EB development in apple. However, the regulation of apple response to EB remains to be uncovered. In this study, three apple cultivars with different EB phenotypes ranging from low to high browning in apple pulp were used to study transcriptomic changes over time after fresh cutting (0, 30 and 60 min). This study allowed the identification of 1448 differentially expressed genes

The stability of candidate reference genes was evaluated in maize landrace varieties and during multiple grain developmental stages to evaluate the expression of carotenoid-related genes by RT-qPCR for application to maize biofortification. Vitamin A deficiency affects millions of children worldwide; therefore, increasing the content of vitamin A precursors in maize grains is of interest. The study of the expression of genes involved in the carotenoid biosynthetic pathway in maize grains has provided useful information for metabolic engineering approaches. Plants use CO2 to produce carbohydrates via photosynthesis. A number of studies have focused on the high CO2 response of plants, whereas little is known about the low CO2 response of plants. Considering that phytohormones regulate responses to various environmental stresses, we hypothesized that they might also regulate the low CO2 response. In this study, we show that Arabidopsis plants adjust the low CO2 response by inducing salicylic acid (SA) and abscisic acid (ABA). Phytohormone analysis revealed a dramatic increase in SA under low CO2 conditions. Furthermore, the increase in SA was compl

BACKGROUND: Soil salinity is a critical threat to global agriculture and understanding the dynamic and tissue-specific responses of crops exposed to salt is essential for developing mitigation strategies. Broccoli (Brassica oleracea L. var. italica), a crop that shows sensitivity to salinity while retaining the ability to activate adaptive responses, has not been extensively studied at the molecular level under salinity. In this study, we conducted a time-course analysis combining transcriptomic, physiological, and biochemical approaches to unravel the mechanisms underlying the tolerance of br

Sorghum (Sorghum bicolor [L.] Moench) is an important forage crop that contains the cyanogenic glucoside dhurrin that releases hydrogen cyanide when tissue is damaged. The acyanogenic (dhurrin-free) sorghum line tcd1 was developed to eliminate the risk of cyanide poisoning from sorghum forage. However, dhurrin may also play a role in nitrogen accumulation and storage. We tested whether dhurrin offers the cyanogenic sorghum line BTx623 a growth advantage relative to tcd1 , when nitrogen is limiting and variable. BTx623 and tcd1 were grown under two 42-day nitrogen treatments: high dose, low fre

The overexpression of HaCYC2c and its regulation on HaNDUA2 through transcriptional recognition are important for regulating the heteromorphous development and functional differentiation of ray and disc florets in sunflower. Flower symmetry is closely related to pollinator recruitment and individual fecundity for higher plants and is the main feature used to identify flower type in angiosperms. In sunflower, HaCYC2c regulates floral organ development and floral symmetry, but the specific detail remains unclear. In this study, sunflower long petal mutant (lpm) with HaCYC2c insertion mutation wa

Fusarium wilt of banana is caused by the soil-borne fungus Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. cubense (Foc). The fact that there are no economically viable biological, chemical, or cultural measures of controlling the disease in an infected field leads to search for alternative strategies involving activation of the plant's innate defense system. The mechanisms underlying systemic acquired resistance (SAR) are much less understood in monocots than in dicots. Since systemic protection of plants by attenuated or avirulent pathogens is a typical SAR response, the establishment of a biologically induced SA
