A survey of the practice patterns of gynecologic oncologists dealing with hereditary cancer patients in Japan.

Hereditary breast and ovarian cancer syndrome (HBOC) is a significant type of familial ovarian cancer. A survey of gynecologic oncologists was conducted in order to characterize the state of care and awareness of information provision for HBOC in Japan and to identify information necessary to enhance HBOC care. All gynecologic oncologists certified by the Japan Society of Gynecologic Oncology (JSGO) as specialists in the treatment of ovarian cancer were included. They were sent a 44-question questionnaire dealing with the background of the respondent, the facilities at the respondent's medical

The academic impact and value of an international online surgery lecture series.

Due to the worldwide travel restrictions caused by the 2019 coronavirus disease pandemic, many universities and students lost opportunities to engage in international exchange over the past 2 years. Teleconferencing systems have thus been developed to compensate for severe travel restrictions. Kansai Medical University in Japan and Vilnius University in Lithuania have a collaborative research and academic relationship. The two universities have been conducting an online joint international surgery lecture series for the medical students of both universities. Fifteen lectures were given from Oc

New SMARCA2 mutation in a patient with Nicolaides-Baraitser syndrome and myoclonic astatic epilepsy.

We report a de novo SMARCA2 missense mutation discovered on exome sequencing in a patient with myoclonic astatic epilepsy, leading to reassessment and identification of Nicolaides-Baraitser syndrome. This de novo SMARCA2 missense mutation c.3721C>G, p.Gln1241Glu is the only reported mutation on exon 26 outside the ATPase domain of SMARCA2 to be associated with Nicolaides-Baraitser syndrome and adds to chromatin remodeling as a pathway for epileptogenesis. © 2016 The Authors. Marfan syndrome.

Marfan syndrome is a heritable disorder of the connective tissue that affects the cardiovascular, skeletal and ocular systems, and often involves the skin, nervous system and lungs. Historically, a person with Marfan syndrome had a poor prognosis due to the cardiovascular effects of this disorder. The life expectancy has improved dramatically over the past 30 years for individuals with Marfan syndrome because of aggressive medical and molecular research and advances in surgical technology. This article discusses the history, genetics, manifestations, diagnosis and treatment of Marfan syndrome.

Holoprosencephaly: genetic, neuroradiological, and clinical advances.

Recent advances in genetics and neuroimaging have greatly contributed to our understanding of the spectrum of midline brain and craniofacial malformations known as holoprosencephaly. This review summarizes our current understanding of the epidemiology and molecular-genetic bases of these malformations, as well as recent neuroradiological and clinical studies, which have revealed that the manifestations of holoprosencephaly are far more variable than previously appreciated. We also discuss the implications for and importance of accurate diagnosis, prognosis, management of common medical problem

Professional duties are now considered legal duties of care within genomic medicine.

The legal duty to protect patient confidentiality is common knowledge amongst healthcare professionals. However, what may not be widely known, is that this duty is not always absolute. In the United Kingdom, both the General Medical Council governing the practice of all doctors, as well as many other professional codes of practice recognise that, under certain circumstances, it may be appropriate to break confidentiality. This arises when there is a wider duty to protect the health of others, and when the risk of non-disclosure outweighs the potential harm from breaking confidentiality. We dis

Training Genetic Counsellors to Deliver an Innovative Therapeutic Intervention: their Views and Experience of Facilitating Multi-Family Discussion Groups.

Innovations in clinical genetics have increased diagnosis, treatment and prognosis of inherited genetic conditions (IGCs). This has led to an increased number of families seeking genetic testing and / or genetic counselling and increased the clinical load for genetic counsellors (GCs). Keeping pace with biomedical discoveries, interventions are required to support families to understand, communicate and cope with their Inherited Genetic Condition. The Socio-Psychological Research in Genomics (SPRinG) collaborative have developed a new intervention, based on multi-family discussion groups (MFDG

Direct-to-consumer genetic testing in Slovenia: availability, ethical dilemmas and legislation.

INTRODUCTION: Over the last few years, many private companies are advertising direct-to-consumer genetic testing (DTC GT), mostly with no or only minor clinical utility and validity of tests and without genetic counselling. International professional community does not approve provision of DTC GT and situation in some EU countries has been analysed already. The aim of our study was to analyse current situation in the field of DTC GT in Slovenia and related legal and ethical issues. Genetic disease in the 1960s: a structural revolution.

From about 1955 to about 1975, an explosion of new institutions, disciplines, databases, interventions, practices, techniques, and ideas turned technically driven human genetics from a medical backwater to an exotic and appealing medical research frontier. In the early 1960s, health care professionals were attracted to the new insights of cytogenetics, including the chromosomal explanation of Down syndrome and of other congenital defects and abnormalities of sexual development. The discovery of a connection between myeloid leukemia and chromosomal abnormalities in leukemic cells made human cyt

Training in human genetics in the United States.

A national study of existing and future human resource needs in the field of human genetics has never been conducted. Published figures of the existing levels of human genetics training are not available. This report reviews the current status of graduate training in human genetics in the US. Issues of certification, accreditation, enrollment and recommendations for future training needs are also discussed. As of 1989, 109 US programs offered training at the graduate or postgraduate level in human genetics. Sixty-seven percent were degree-granting programs. A 20% increase in the number of prog

Recommendations for the implementation of BRCA testing in ovarian cancer patients and their relatives.

The current availability of new Poly(ADP-ribose) Polymerase (PARP)-inhibitors for the treatment of ovarian cancer patients independently of the presence of a BRCA pathogenic variant, together with the validation of somatic test for the analysis of BRCA1/2 genes, involves the need to optimise the guidelines for BRCA testing. The AIOM-SIGU-SIBIOC-SIAPEC-IAP Italian Scientific Societies, in this position paper, recommend the implementation of BRCA testing with 2 main objectives: the first is the identification of ovarian cancer patients with higher probability of benefit from specific anticancer

Use of record linkage between a statewide genetics service and a Birth Defects/Congenital Malformations Register to determine use of genetic counselling services.

The Birth Defects/Congenital Malformations Register of the Victorian Department of Human Services contains detailed, confidential information on over 2,000 babies born with a birth defect each year in Victoria, Australia, representing approximately 3% of the annual number of births. For 1991 and 1993, the type of anomaly was categorised as warranting a high, moderate, or low need of referral for genetic counselling, depending on risk of recurrence and possible genetic cause. The Victorian Clinical Genetics Service at the Murdoch Institute, Melbourne, offers free, centralised genetic counsellin

Some legal implications of advances in human genetics.

The law which, to some extent at least, reflects contemporary mores, has not kept pace with the recent scientific advances in genetics. Because of the rate of advance in the science of genetics there is a real risk that we shall know how to change the traditional nature of man before we possess the knowledge necessary to enable us to use the new knowledge for humane purposes. Clonal reproduction may produce a creature who, for the purposes of the law, especially the criminal law, which defines when a child becomes a human being in terms of "old-fashioned" motherhood, may not be a human being,

Unique disease heritage of the Dutch-German Mennonite population.

The Dutch-German Mennonites are a religious isolate with foundational roots in the 16th century. A tradition of endogamy, large families, detailed genealogical records, and a unique disease history all contribute to making this a valuable population for genetic studies. Such studies in the Dutch-German Mennonite population have already contributed to the identification of the causative genes in several conditions such as the incomplete form of X-linked congenital stationary night blindness (CSNB2; previously iCSNB) and hypophosphatasia (HOPS), as well as the discovery of founder mutations with

Portuguese Society of Ophthalmology and Portuguese Society of Human Genetics Joint Clinical Practice Guidelines for Genetic Testing in Inherited Retinal Dystrophies.

The Portuguese Society of Ophthalmology and the Portuguese Society of Human Genetics developed clinical practice guidelines to streamline genetic testing for inherited retinal dystrophies (IRDs), underlining the critical role of molecular diagnosis in enhancing patient care. Genetic testing is pivotal in diagnosis, genetic counselling, prognosis and access to clinical trials, and new gene-specific therapies. These guidelines recommend genetic testing in all IRD patients and provide a detailed assessment of available testing methods, ensuring that genetic counselling is integrated into ophthalm
