Mortality in an Italian nursing home during COVID-19 pandemic: correlation with gender, age, ADL, vitamin D supplementation, and limitations of the diagnostic tests.

INTRODUCTION: The COVID-19 pandemic caused an increased mortality in nursing homes due to its quick spread and the age-related high lethality. RESULTS: We observed a two-month mortality of 40%, compared to 6.4% in the previous year. This increase was seen in both COVID-19 positive (43%) and negative (24%) residents, but 8 patients among those testing negative on the swab, tested positive on serological tests. Increased mortality was associated with male gender, older age, no previous vitamin D supplementation and worse "activities of daily living (ADL)" scores, such as Barthel index, Tinetti

Older People Living in Nursing Homes: An Oral Health Screening Survey in Florence, Italy.

The oral health state plays an important role in the concept of 'elderly frailty', since institutionalized older people are prone to suffering from bad oral conditions. The aim of this study is to assess the state of oral health in the older residents of nursing homes and to measure its potential association with the cognitive state, the degree of functional autonomy, and the malnutrition risk. Methods: We enrolled 176 subjects from 292 residents in five nursing homes in Florence. For each subject, we performed the Malnutrition Universal Screening Tool, the Pfeiffer test, the Minimum Data Set-

Emergency Department Hallways Are Associated With Incident Delirium and Severe Agitation in Older Adults Living With Dementia.

BACKGROUND: Geriatric patients awaiting medical admission frequently experience extended emergency department (ED) stays and receive care in ED hallways. While prolonged ED stays are associated with increased delirium and mortality, the effect of placement in hallways remains unknown. This study's objective was to assess whether prolonged ED hallway exposure is associated with incident delirium and severe agitation in older adults and older persons living with dementia (PLWD). METHODS: We conducted a multi-site retrospective cohort database study between January 1, 2022 and December 31, 2023

Social alienation among older adults with cognitive frailty: a latent profile analysis.

BACKGROUND: The rising prevalence of cognitive frailty among older adults necessitates a deeper understanding of its psychosocial consequenc … ation. These findings suggest that routine screening for alienation could be a valuable addition to geriatric nursing assessments. Furthermore, our results provide an empirical foundation for future studies to develop and test targeted interventions, such as physical and psychological support programs for high-risk individuals, and to explore the feasibility of mob …

Varying Associations Between Body Mass Index and Physical and Cognitive Function in Three Samples of Older Adults Living in Different Settings.

BACKGROUND: The study investigates variations in the associations between body mass index (BMI) and (a) physical and (b) cognitive function across three samples of older adults living in different settings, and moreover determines if the association between BMI and physical function is confounded by cognitive abilities. METHODS: One hundred ninety-five patients of a geriatric day hospital, 322 persons receiving home care (HC), and 183 nursing home (NH) residents were examined regarding BMI, cognitive (Mini-Mental State Examination), and physical function (Barthel Index for activities of daily

Social Connectedness Resource Preferences of Older Adults in Assisted Living: A Scoping Review Based on the WHO-ICF Framework.

The current scoping review identified emerging evidence on social connectedness resource preferences of older adults in assisted living facilities (ALFs) and the community. A literature search was performed using several databases. We included review articles published between January 2000 and September 2022 in English and related to social connectedness resources in ALFs and the community. Of 134 titles and abstracts, eight studies were included. Study participants comprised 2,482 older adults from 233 ALFs in the United States. Themes were framed using the World Health Organization's Interna

Simulation-based learning to enhance students' knowledge and skills in educating older patients.

Training nursing students in older patient education may be facilitated by the student elderly simulated-patient strategy. The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of simulation-based learning on students' skills in providing education to older patients. A quasi-experimental design with repeated measures was used. Nursing students enrolled in clinical courses in their semesters 7 and 8 of the program were randomly assigned to simulation-based learning (SBL) group (n = 35) or lecture-based learning (LBL) group (n = 35). In SBL, the student simulated-elderly patients equipped with

The 'right' place to care for older people: home or institution?

In 2008, the Minister of Health for Iceland issued a new regulation intended to govern assessment practices related to placement in nursing homes. One of the aims of the regulation was to ensure that those with the most severe need would have priority. This would be achieved, in part, by requiring older people to exhaust all available community-based service options before an assessment for placement would even take place. The new regulation was received with some hostility and criticism on the part of older people and their relatives, who described the changed expectations as 'abandonment' by

Accidents in the institutionalized elderly: injuries and consequences.

A total of 308 major and 519 minor accidents involving 588 patients occurred during one year at a somatic long-term care hospital and its associated nursing homes. In relation to the number of patients, the incidence of accidents was nearly three times higher in the nursing homes than in the hospital. The most prevalent injuries in female patients were fractures and hematomas, while open wounds were more frequent among male patients. Hip fractures were about as common in women as in men, while fractures of the extremities were three times more frequent in women. The majority of the accidents o

Effectiveness of Nurse-Led Case Management in Community Settings Among Older Adults: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Integrated, people-centred care requires continuity and coordination across services, and nurses increasingly contribute to case management; however, evidence on its effectiveness for older adults living at home remains limited. This systematic review aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of nurse-led case management for community-dwelling older adults compared with usual care. METHODS: PubMed, CINAHL, Embase and the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials were searched from inception to 13 August 2025, for randomised controlled trials comparing nurse-led case management wi
