Testicular germ-cell tumours (TGCTs) are the most common cancer in young men; the incidence is increasing worldwide and they have an unusually high rate of metastasis. Despite significant work on TGCTs and their metastases in humans, absence of a mouse model of spontaneous metastasis has greatly limited our understanding of the mechanisms by which metastatic potential is acquired and on their modes of dissemination. OBJECTIVE: To analyze the characteristics of patients with testicular germ cell cancer and compare patients' sperm quality according to histologic type (seminomatous and nonseminomatous tumors).
DESIGN: Prospective study.
SETTING: Sperm bank at a university.
PATIENT(S): One hundred consecutive patients with testicular tumor who had been referred to our infertility center for cryopreservation, between 2004 and 2006.
INTERVENTION(S): A questionnaire, through personal interview, was given to all patients and collection of seminal data before cryopreservation was performed.

Nucleotide excision repair (NER) is one of the factors influencing the cellular sensitivity to anticancer drugs. In the present study we compared the expression of the NER proteins ERCC1 and XPF in 24 testicular germ cell tumors (TGCT) with the corresponding normal testicular tissue of the same patient. We report a case of a patient who presented with anterior mediastinal mass, seizure disorder, and mental retardation. Computerized tomography-guided fine-needle aspiration biopsy of the mass showed nonseminomatous germ cell tumor. Chromosomal analysis showed XXY karyotype. OBJECTIVE: To analyze a series of occurrences of growing teratoma syndrome after ovarian germ cell tumors.
METHODS: We analyzed a database containing 103 patients affected by pure or mixed ovarian immature teratoma.
RESULTS: We report 12 patients fulfilling growing teratoma syndrome criteria (incidence 12%). The median interval between the diagnosis of ovarian immature teratoma and growing teratoma syndrome was 9 months (range 4-55). This case report describes for the first time a case of pure testicular carcinoid pre-aortic lymph node metastases in a 25 year old patient with carcinoid syndrome. The simultaneous occurrence of intratubular germ cell neoplasia in the surrounding testicular tissue was identified by OCT4 and placental-like alkaline phosphatase positivity. This confirmed that the tumour had a germ cell origin in the testis, rather than being a metastasis from an extragenital carcinoid.
