Bone mineral density in collegiate female athletes: comparisons among sports.

CONTEXT: Some female athletes may have decreased bone mineral density (BMD), which puts them at higher risk for stress fractures and future osteoporosis. OBJECTIVE: To compare site-specific BMD among National Collegiate Athletic Association Division I varsity female athletes and to determine predictor variables of BMD measurements. DESIGN: Between-groups design. SETTING: University health care system. PATIENTS OR OTHER PARTICIPANTS: All women varsity athletes were invited to participate in a cross-sectional study. Of 12 sports, we obtained complete data from 99 women (mean age = 20.2 +/- 1

Self-Reported Physical Activities of Children Aged 9 to 14 Years Who Have Been Treated For Congenital Heart Disease.

Children with congenital heart disease (CHD) often experience limited physical activity due to protective behavior from parents and physicians. This study aimed to assess whether physical activity remains insufficient in children post-CHD treatment. A descriptive study was conducted with 40 children aged 9 to 14 years who had been treated for CHD at least 12 months prior and were clinically stable without medication. A control group of 40 healthy peers was included. Physical activity data were collected using a demographic form and the Physical Activity Questionnaire adapted to the Turkish lan

Microinstability of Major Joints in Movement Disorders: The Hidden Challenge.

Microinstability, characterized by subtle and often painful disturbances in joint stability, significantly impacts individuals engaged in activities requiring extensive ranges of motion, such as dancing or gymnastics, and is particularly prevalent in young female athletes. This condition, resulting from progressive microtrauma, architectural and functional abnormalities, or iatrogenic factors, is challenging to diagnose and often underreported. Understanding the biomechanical nuances of microinstability is essential for accurate diagnosis and effective management. Upper limb joints, including

Return of motor evoked potentials after knee flexion in the setting of high-grade spondylolisthesis.

PURPOSE: To present a case of loss of motor-evoked potentials (MEPs) to the left foot in the supine position after a partial reduction and instrumented fusion from L4 to pelvis which was managed successfully without revision or removal of implants. METHODS: We report a patient with high-grade spondylolisthesis who demonstrated loss of motor-evoked potentials after posterior spinal fusion and transfer to supine position. The patient's knees were flexed to 90° and signals were immediately restored. Systemic steroids were administered and circumferential fusion was delayed 21 days. Anterior-inte

Phimosis: stretching methods with or without application of topical steroids?

Phimosis has been defined as unretractable foreskin without adherences or a circular band of tight prepuce preventing full retraction. We suggested a new treatment protocol combining betamethasone with stretching exercises to reduce the number of patients requiring surgery for phimosis. Between January 2003 and September 2004, 247 boys aged 4 to 14 years (mean 7.6) were included in this consecutive, prospective, open study. Patients were treated with 0.05% betamethasone cream applied to the distal aspect of the prepuce twice daily for the first 15 days, then once daily for 15 more days. Preput

Chronic wrist pain.

Nonarticular chronic wrist pain continues to be a challenging subject in which interest and knowledge are increasing. Although many more excellent articles could have been included in this review, an attempt is made to discuss papers that have impact on the recognition, diagnosis, and treatment of various wrist problems. Developments in diagnostic algorithms and refinements in the use of imaging and arthroscopic tools are reviewed. Arthroscopy provides exciting direct visual information and therapeutic opportunities for triangular fibrocartilage complex disruptions and lunatotriquetral ligamen

[Dorso-lumbar spinal compression fractures in the child. Follow-up at the termination of development].

Between 1970 and 1985, we count 32 children with compressive fractures of the vertebral column. None of them undergo a surgical procedure. We examine 24 of these 32 children with a mean delay of 10.5 years. Most of the fractures were referring to sporting activities and home games. The main localization was dorsal (T6) and upper-lumbar (12). The mean reduced height of the ventral portion of the vertebra was 27%. Some 10 years later, two third of the patients have some persistent pains and half of them daily. Most of the aches concerned children of more than 12 years when trauma occurred and th

Developing physical fitness for the elderly through sport and exercise.

For maintaining and developing motor mobility in old age motor activity is essential. We can take from the phylogenesis and ontogenesis of the human being how important physical activity is for personality development and for maintaining physical fitness in old age. Many phenomena, which have so far been thought to be due to natural consequences of the ageing process, can now be traced back to lack of physical activity. These findings are illustrated by examples referring to the most important subsystems of our organism (such as the central nervous system, the cardiovascular system, etc.). To

Modular organization of intermuscular and interjoint interaction during ball catching.

The aim of this study was to examine the organization of ball-catching movements with different biomechanical structures, which are among the profile elements in rhythmic gymnastics, based on common synergies. An additional goal was to identify specific synergies presumably formed during the performing of movements with increased coordinative complexity. Synergy parameters were derived from simultaneously recorded electromyographic (EMG) data from 16 muscles and joint angle kinematics; factor analysis and principal component analysis were applied. It was found that at the kinematic level, part

Posterior ankle impingement in athletes: Pathogenesis, imaging features and differential diagnoses.

Posterior ankle impingement is a clinical diagnosis which can be seen following a traumatic hyper-plantar flexion event and may lead to painful symptoms in athletes such as female dancers ('en pointe'), football players, javelin throwers and gymnasts. Symptoms of posterior ankle impingement are due to failure to accommodate the reduced interval between the posterosuperior aspect of the talus and tibial plafond during plantar flexion, and can be due to osseous or soft tissue lesions. There are multiple causes of posterior ankle impingement. Most commonly, the structural correlates of impingemen

Boots on horses: limb protection or hyperflexion training aids in the showjumping horse.

Showjumping riders regularly employ various schooling strategies to control the horse's jump stride kinematics (JSK). Strategies include plyometric training regimes with fences of different heights and widths set at specific distances. Gymnastic grids teach the horse to jump cleanly. Rapping, once used almost routinely, is no longer in vogue. However, the use of performance enhancing (PE) boots on the distal hind limbs to alter equine JSK has become popular. There are two broad categories of PE boots: weighted and pressure. Some riders use so-called weighted boots on the horses' hind limbs dur

Magnetic resonance imaging of the wrist.

Optimal magnetic resonance (MR) imaging of the wrist requires a high field strength magnet and a dedicated wrist coil to achieve high-resolution images. Using current MR sequences, detailed images of articular cartilage and the supporting ligaments and tendons can be obtained. Evaluation of the triangular fibrocartilage as well as the extrinsic and intrinsic ligaments of the wrist is possible with thin-slice three-dimensional volumetric gradient recalled sequences. Fast inversion recovery sequences, used to achieve fat suppression in peripheral joints such as the wrist, allow for detection of

Occupational biomechanics of athletes and dancers: a comparative approach.

Muscle strains represent more than a third of all injuries in both dancers and athletes. Although often overlooked, anatomic variations play an important role in the etiology of these injuries, as does strength imbalance between agonists and antagonists. The incidence of spondylolysis is unusually high in ballet dancers and certain athletic groups, such as gymnasts, javelin throwers, and weight-lifters. Mechanical factors play a major role and can be exacerbated by congenital abnormalities. Various permanent adaptive musculoskeletal changes have been described both in dancers and athletes, esp

Risk Factors, Diagnosis and Management of Bone Stress Injuries in Adolescent Athletes: A Narrative Review.

Physical activity is known to be beneficial for bone; however, some athletes who train intensely are at risk of bone stress injury (BSI). Incidence in adolescent athlete populations is between 3.9 and 19% with recurrence rates as high as 21%. Participation in physical training can be highly skeletally demanding, particularly during periods of rapid growth in adolescence, and when competition and training demands are heaviest. Sports involving running and jumping are associated with a higher incidence of BSI and some athletes appear to be more susceptible than others. Maintaining a very lean ph

When Is It Too Early for Single Sport Specialization?

Over the past 15 years, there has been an increase in youth sports participation with a concomitant increase in early year-round training in a single sport. Many factors contribute to the desire of parents and coaches to encourage early single sport specialization, including the desire to give the young athlete an edge in competition, pursuit of scholarships, and potential professional status, and the ability to label a young athlete as elite at an early age. Despite these perceived advantages, some data suggest that early sport specialization does not lead to a competitive advantage over athl

Field dependence-independence in complex motor skills.

This study analyzed the relationship between field dependence-independence and complex motor skills. According to the requirements of each sporting activity, subjects' motor system can be mainly controlled through exteroceptive or proprioceptive information. Sport performances require the athlete to disembed himself, other players, or the ball from the background, and decision-making appears to require cognitive restructuring. 26 athletes (13 men and 13 women) involved in acrobatic sports (gymnastics, trampoline, half-pipe snowboard, synchronized 3-m springboard, acrobatic rock, skateboard, an

Patellar tendon properties and neuromuscular performance across different power sports.

BACKGROUND: Monitoring tendon morphology and function can improve our understanding of how tendons adapt to chronic training, potentially supporting the maintenance of strength and endurance. Despite that explosive sports share similarities, they also differ in key factors like movement speed and reactivity, loading duration and direction, range of motion, and muscle contraction type. This study aimed to compare the patellar tendon morphology and mechanical characteristics among sprinters, long and high jumpers, gymnasts, and karate athletes. METHODS: Forty-one elite male athletes with nation
