Modulation of hippocampal theta oscillations via deep brain stimulation of the parietal cortex depends on cognitive state.

The angular gyrus (AG) and posterior cingulate cortex (PCC) demonstrate extensive structural and functional connectivity with the hippocampus and other core recollection network regions. Consequently, recent studies have explored neuromodulation targeting these and other regions as a potential strategy for restoring function in memory disorders such as Alzheimer's Disease. However, determining the optimal approach for neuromodulatory devices requires understanding how parameters like selected stimulation site, cognitive state during modulation, and stimulation duration influence the effects of

Cortical kappa opioid receptors integrate negative affect and sleep disturbance.

Sleep disruption and negative affect are attendant features of many psychiatric and neurological conditions that are often co-morbid including major depressive disorder, generalized anxiety disorder and chronic pain. Whether there is a causal relationship between negative affect and sleep disruption remains unclear. We therefore asked if mechanisms promoting negative affect can disrupt sleep and whether inhibition of pathological negative affect can normalize disrupted sleep. Signaling at the kappa opioid receptor (KOR) elicits dysphoria in humans and aversive conditioning in animals. We teste

Switching tinnitus on or off: An initial investigation into the role of the pregenual and rostral to dorsal anterior cingulate cortices.

Research indicates that hearing loss significantly contributes to tinnitus, but it alone does not fully explain its occurrence, as many people with hearing loss do not experience tinnitus. To identify a secondary factor for tinnitus generation, we examined a unique dataset of individuals with intermittent chronic tinnitus, who experience fluctuating periods of tinnitus. EEGs of healthy controls were compared to EEGs of participants who reported perceiving tinnitus on certain days, but no tinnitus on other days.. The EEG data revealed that tinnitus onset is associated with increased theta activ

Structural-informed functional MRI analysis of patients with empathy impairment following stroke.

BACKGROUND: The underlying functional alterations of brain structural changes among patients with empathy impairment following stroke remain unclear. We sought to investigate functional connectivity changes informed by brain structural abnormalities in multimodal magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) among patients with empathy impairment following stroke. METHODS: We enrolled people who had experienced their first ischemic stroke, along with healthy controls. We assessed empathy 3 months after stroke using the Chinese version of the Empathy Quotient (EQ). During the acute phase, all patients unde

Activation of Internal Correctness Monitoring Circuitry in Youths With Psychosis Spectrum Symptoms.

BACKGROUND: Self-directed performance monitoring is a critical contributor to cognitive performance and general functioning and is impacted by psychiatric symptoms and personality traits, but has been understudied in psychosis-risk states. We have shown that ventral striatum (VS) responds to correctness during cognitive tasks where no explicit feedback is required, and this intrinsic reinforcement response is reduced in schizophrenia. METHODS: Here, we examined this phenomenon in youths (n = 796, age range 11-22 years) from the Philadelphia Neurodevelopmental Cohort (PNC) performing a working

Alterations in the topological organization of the default-mode network in Tourette syndrome.

BACKGROUND: The exact pathophysiology of TS is still elusive. Previous studies have identified default mode networks (DMN) abnormalities in patients with TS. However, these literatures investigated the neural activity during the tic suppression, not a true resting-state. Therefore, this study aimed to reveal the neural mechanism of Tourette's syndrome (TS) from the perspective of topological organization and functional connectivity within the DMN by electroencephalography (EEG) in resting-state. METHODS: The study was conducted by analyzing the EEG data of TS patients with graph theory approa

Association between high levels of body-esteem and increased degree of midcingulate cortex global connectivity: A resting-state fMRI study.

Multiple neuroimaging studies have examined the neural underpinnings of body image disturbances in patients with eating disorders. However, key brain regions related to body image, such as body-esteem (BE), among healthy individuals are understudied. Given the extremely crucial role of BE in eating behaviors and physical and mental health, the current study conducted data-driven analysis and characterized the neurobiological correlates of BE with the network properties of the resting brain using the voxel-wise degree centrality (DC) measures of resting-state functional magnetic resonance imagi

Altered functional connectivity in common resting-state networks in patients with major depressive disorder: A resting-state functional connectivity study.

The neural correlates of major depressive disorder (MDD) remain disputed. In the absence of reliable biological markers, the dysfunction and interaction of neural networks have been proposed as pathophysiological neural mechanisms in depression. Here, we examined the functional connectivity (FC) of brain networks. 51 healthy volunteers (mean age 33.57 ± 7.80) and 55 individuals diagnosed with MDD (mean age 33.89 ± 11.00) participated by performing a resting-state (rs) fMRI scan. Seed to voxel FC analyses were performed. Compared to healthy control (HC), MDD patients showed higher connectivity

Different functional alteration in attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder across developmental age groups: A meta-analysis and an independent validation of resting-state functional connectivity studies.

BACKGROUND: Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a highly complex and heterogeneous disorder. Abnormal brain connectivity in ADHD might be influenced by developmental ages which might lead to the lacking of significant spatial convergence across studies. However, the developmental patterns and mechanisms of ADHD brain connectivity remain to be fully uncovered. METHODS: In the present study, we searched PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, and Embase for seed-based whole-brain resting-state functional connectivity studies of ADHD published through October 12th, 2020. The seeds meeting

Processing of pain by the developing brain: evidence of differences between adolescent and adult females.

Adolescence is a sensitive period for both brain development and the emergence of chronic pain particularly in females. However, the brain mechanisms supporting pain perception during adolescence remain unclear. This study compares perceptual and brain responses to pain in female adolescents and adults to characterize pain processing in the developing brain. Thirty adolescent (ages 13-17 years) and 30 adult (ages 35-55 years) females underwent a functional magnetic resonance imaging scan involving acute pain. Participants received 12 ten-second noxious pressure stimuli that were applied to the

Evidence of persistent glial cell dysfunction in the anterior cingulate cortex of juvenile idiopathic arthritis children: a proton MRS study.

BACKGROUND: This study aims to investigate whether the neurometabolites of the anterior cingulate cortex (ACC) were distinct in patients with active and inactive juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA) using the proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy. METHODS: We measured the levels of total N-acetylaspartate (tNAA), choline (Cho), myo-inositol (ml), glutamate (Glu) and the complex of glutamate and glutamine (Glx) relative to total creatine (tCr) in ACC of each participant. RESULTS: Compared with the healthy controls, a significant decrease of total Cho/tCr and Glx/tCr ratio in ACC occurred in a

Association between resilience and cortical thickness in the posterior cingulate cortex and the temporal pole in Japanese older people: A population-based cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Resilience is a crucial factor preventing the onset of mental illness and contributing to the well-being and healthy longevity, whose neural bases are not fully elucidated in older people. The present study aimed to identify the cortical thickness associating with resilience in older adults. METHODS: This is a part of the cross-sectional Arakawa geriatric cohort study for people aged 65 years or older, consisting of 1001 individuals. Differential modulation of the anterior cingulate and insular cortices on anxiogenic-like responses induced by empathy for pain.

Mice cohabiting with a conspecific in chronic pain display anxiogenesis in the elevated plus-maze (EPM). Given that the anterior cingulate (ACC) and insular (InC) cortices play a role in the modulation of anxiety, pain, and emotional contagion, we investigated (a) the FosB activation in both brain areas and (b) the effects of intra-ACC or -InC injection of cobalt chloride (CoCl2, a synaptic blocker), on the anxiety of mice cohabiting with a cagemate suffering pain. Twenty-one days after birth, male Swiss mice were housed in pairs for 14 days to establish familiarity. On the 14th day, mice were

Variation in rostral anterior cingulate functional connectivity with amygdala and caudate during first manic episode distinguish bipolar young adults who do not remit following treatment.

OBJECTIVES: Altered activity in the ventrolateral prefrontal and anterior cingulate cortices, as well as subcortical and amygdala projection sites, was previously reported during a first manic episode in youth with bipolar disorder and observed to be associated with treatment response. To extend these findings, we investigated functional connectivity among these regions in first-episode manic participants who remitted after 8 weeks of treatment compared to those who did not. METHODS: Forty-two participants with bipolar disorder (60% female) during their first manic episode were recruited and

Partial integration of the components of value in anterior cingulate cortex.

Evaluation often involves integrating multiple determinants of value, such as the different possible outcomes in risky choice. A brain region can be placed either before or after a presumed evaluation stage by measuring how responses of its neurons depend on multiple determinants of value. A brain region could also, in principle, show partial integration, which would indicate that it occupies a middle position between (preevaluative) nonintegration and (postevaluative) full integration. Existing mathematical techniques cannot distinguish full from partial integration and therefore risk misiden

Anterior Cingulate Cortex Implants for Alcohol Addiction: A Feasibility Study.

Abnormal neural activity, particularly in the rostrodorsal anterior cingulate cortex (rdACC), appears to be responsible for intense alcohol craving. Neuromodulation of the rdACC using cortical implants may be an option for individuals with treatment-resistant alcohol dependence. This study assessed the effectiveness and feasibility of suppressing alcohol craving using cortical implants of the rdACC using a controlled one-group pre- and post-test study design. Eight intractable alcohol-dependent participants (four males and four females) were implanted with two Lamitrode 44 electrodes over the

A frontal-vagal network theory for Major Depressive Disorder: Implications for optimizing neuromodulation techniques.

Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) is a psychiatric disorder characterized by high comorbidity with cardiovascular disease. Furthermore, a combination of high heart rate (HR) and low heart rate variability (HRV) has been frequently reported in depressed patients. The present review proposes a frontal-vagal (brain-heart) network that overlaps with functional nodes of the depression network. Moreover, we summarize neuromodulation studies that have targeted key nodes in this depression network, with subsequent impact on heart rate (HR) or heart-rate-variability (HRV), such as the dorsolateral prefro

Subcortical lesions due to cobalamin deficiency: an unusual MRI lesion pattern.

We present a 44-year-old male patient with new onset of right focal epilepsy and bilateral hand hypesthesia. Cerebral MRI showed bilateral T2w/DWI hyperintense subcortical lesions in the cingulate gyrus, insula, and amygdala, whereas spinal MRI revealed a cervical posterior column lesion, corresponding to subacute combined degeneration. Laboratory workup revealed a cobalamin deficiency due to type A gastritis, and no evidence of antibodies associated with limbic encephalitis. After sufficient cobalamin substitution, the cerebral and spinal lesions gradually regressed. Our case represents a uni

A connectional hub in the rostral anterior cingulate cortex links areas of emotion and cognitive control.

The middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAO) model has been extensively applied to study ischaemic stroke. This study attempted to clarify effect of bone marrow stromal cells (BMSCs) on infarct injury of MCAO rats. BMSCs were isolated and identified by staining CD29/CD44 and CD31/CD45. CX3CL1 silencing vector (pLVX-shRNA-CX3CL1) was generated and infected to BMSCs. pLVX-shRNA-CX3CL1 infected BMSCs were transplanted into brain tissue of MCAO rats. Real-time PCR was used to determine CX3CL1 expression. Infarct areas were stained with TTC to evaluate infarct size. Double-staining immunofluorescenc

Expectation of sexual images of adults and children elicits differential dorsal anterior cingulate cortex activation in pedophilic sexual offenders and healthy controls.

BACKGROUND: Pedophilic disorder is characterized by increased sexual interest towards children, with comparatively lesser interest towards adults. In real life, the behavior of subjects with pedophilic disorder is shaped by evaluative processes in response to sexually relevant cues. Therefore, brain activation during anticipation of sexually relevant cues is of potential interest. Whereas previous research demonstrated reduced activation when viewing adult (non-preferred) sexual stimuli in pedophilic sex offenders (PSOs), it is not known if anticipation of preferred versus unpreferred stimuli
