Effect of Health Literacy on use of a Virtual Coach to Promote Home Blood Pressure Monitoring.

Health literacy and hypertension control are more limited in rural U.S. residents relative to metropolitan counterparts. Contemporary hypertension guidelines advocate for health education and home blood pressure monitoring (HBPM) to advance hypertension management. We conducted a preliminary assessment of the effect of health literacy on utilization of a virtual coaching agent, a computerized animation to converse with patient users, to promote HBPM. We recruited individuals from primary care practices in rural Pennsylvania; measured health literacy with the Brief Health Literacy Screen (BRIEF…

Managing complexities of inflammatory rheumatic diseases as a migrant-a qualitative exploration of health literacy experiences.

BACKGROUND: Migrants comprise over 17% of Norway's population and are at increased risk of limited health literacy, a key determinant of health. Health literacy is shaped by language, culture, social norms, discrimination, and health system responsiveness. Inflammatory rheumatic diseases are complex, chronic conditions requiring long-term, specialised care. Patients with these diseases and a migrant background, particularly those with limited proficiency in the dominant language, face additional barriers and poorer outcomes, yet their health literacy experiences remain underexplored. This stud…

In our study, we investigated how health literacy and sociocultural parameters affected compliance and awareness in patients with suspected prostate cancer, for whom TRUS-Bx was planned. METHODS: In the study, 98 male patients aged 50-80 years, recommended for TRUS-Bx, were included in our study. The data including age…

Assessing health literacy and subsequent implementation of an animated video to enhance understanding for patients with nephrolithiasis.

BACKGROUND: The use of visual aids to enhance patient learning is becoming increasingly common in medicine. Patients with a better understanding of surgical procedures tend to have better long-term outcomes due to the active seeking of help when complications occur postsurgery. We hypothesized that showing patients an animation of ureteroscopy with instructions on how to address potential complications would increase their understanding of the perioperative nature of ureteroscopy. METHODS AND MATERIALS: Fifty patients were selected between May and August 2019. The group consisted of patients
