Occupational exposure to air pollution and respiratory health among urban street vendors in South India.

BACKGROUND: Street vending is a non-formal, vital domestic workforce in most developing nations. The street vendors operate in an unregulated environment and are frequently exposed to hazardous environmental pollutants, which is linked to chronic respiratory health problems. However, there is underreporting of this public health problem in literature, creating a blind spot in global health. OBJECTIVE: To assess the association between air quality, occupational exposure characteristics, and pulmonary function among street vendors in an urban community. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was con

The Epidemiology of Working Life: Reorganizing Occupational Health Science Around Work-Structured Exposure Systems.

Occupational epidemiology has played a central role in identifying workplace hazards and informing prevention. However, its focus on discrete exposures, bounded worksites, and linear models is insufficient to capture how contemporary work shapes health. Many risks arise not from isolated hazards, but from cumulative, interacting exposures generated by work organization that extend beyond the workplace and accumulate across working life. This paper proposes the Epidemiology of Working Life (EWL) as a framework for reorganizing occupational health science. Anchored in the working-life-exposome,

Flow and Technology Acceptance in Extended Reality Leisure Participation During Mental Health Occupational Therapy.

This convergent mixed-methods study examined extended reality (XR)-supported leisure participation among 12 long-term psychiatric inpatients completing an 8-week virtual reality and augmented reality program within occupational therapy. Flow experience and technology acceptance were assessed quantitatively alongside qualitative thematic analysis of weekly semi-structured interviews. Flow experience increased significantly (p < .05, r = .82), while technology acceptance remained stable. Perceived usefulness significantly predicted flow (R2 = .575); perceived ease of use did not. Five qualitativ

Occupational skin health risk among nurses: development and validation of a nomogram-based prediction model.

BACKGROUND: Occupational contact dermatitis (OCD) is a prevalent work-related skin condition among nurses and remains a significant occupational health issue due to its impact on well-being, productivity, and workforce sustainability. However, reliable tools for early risk stratification in this population are lacking. This study aimed to develop and validate a nomogram-based prediction model to estimate the individual risk of OCD among nurses. METHODS: A multicenter cross-sectional survey was conducted among 2,852 nurses from 40 hospitals across China. Participants were randomly assigned to

Occupational exposures and incidence of asthma over two decades in the European Community Respiratory Health Survey.

BACKGROUND: While short-term occupational exposures to many agents are associated with increased risk of asthma, the long-term consequences of exposure have not been well understood. We investigated the effects of occupational exposures over two decades on the incidence of asthma. METHODS: This population-based, multicentre cohort was assessed at baseline (European Community Respiratory Health Survey (ECRHS)1) and followed up twice over 20 years (ECRHS2 and ECRHS3). This analysis included data for 5591 participants with complete work histories and free of asthma at baseline. Incident adult-on

Changing prevalence of psychosocial occupational stressors and their impact on employee mental health across birth cohorts.

BACKGROUND: Mental illness is the leading cause of employee absence and vocational disability in many countries. The Job Demand-Control model posits that risk factors for mental illness include psychosocial stressors such as high job demands and low job control. We determined (1) if the prevalence of population-level work-related risk factors has changed over time (workplace change) and (2) whether the strength of the association between risk factors and mental health has changed over time (workforce change). METHODS: Using a nationally representative Australian longitudinal panel survey (N=1

Social, lifestyle, and health status characteristics as a proxy for occupational burnout identification: A network approach analysis.

BACKGROUND: Occupational burnout is a type of psychological syndrome. It can lead to serious mental and physical disorders if not treated in time. However, individuals tend to conceal their genuine feelings of occupational burnout because such disclosures may elicit bias from superiors. This study aims to explore a novel method for estimating occupational burnout by elucidating its links with social, lifestyle, and health status factors. METHODS: In this study 5,794 participants were included. Associations between occupational burnout and a set of features from a survey was analyzed using Chi

A Preliminary Study Exploring the Relationship between Occupational Health Hazards and Gut Microbiota among Firefighters.

Firefighters are exposed to occupational hazards and have a higher prevalence of health issues. The gut microbiota plays a crucial role in the immune, endocrine, and neural systems, and disruptions in its composition can impact health outcomes. This pilot study aimed to investigate the potential association between occupational factors, changes in gut microbiota, and the development of adverse health outcomes in firefighters. To test this hypothesis, we recruited 15 firefighters and age/sex-matched controls to investigate the relationship between occupational environment and gut microbiota. Fi
