Heart rate variability in neonates of type 1 diabetic pregnancy.

BACKGROUND: Cardiomyopathy is a common finding in offspring of pre-gestational type 1 diabetic pregnancy. Echocardiographic and biochemical evidence of fetal cardiac dysfunction have also been reported. Studies suggest that offspring of diabetic mothers (ODM) undergo a fetal programming effect due to the hyperglycaemic intrauterine milieu which increases their risk of cardiovascular morbidity in adult life. Decreased neonatal heart rate variability (HRV) has been described in association with in-utero growth restriction, prematurity, sudden infant death syndrome and congenital heart disease. T…

Wave reflections, arterial stiffness, heart rate variability and orthostatic hypotension.

Increased arterial stiffness and wave reflections are independently associated with orthostatic hypotension (OH). This study investigated whether heart rate variability (HRV) is also involved in the modulation of orthostatic blood pressure (BP) change. A total of 429 subjects (65.1 ± 16.4 years, 77.4% men) were enrolled in this study. OH was defined as a ⩾ 20 mm Hg decrease in brachial systolic blood pressure (SBP) or a ⩾ 10 mm Hg diastolic blood pressure (DBP) decrease upon standing. Measurements of carotid-femoral pulse wave velocity (cf-PWV) and the amplitude of the reflected pressure wave …

Heart rate and salivary cortisol concentrations in foals at birth.

Heart rate (HR), HR variability (HRV) and salivary cortisol concentrations were determined in foals (n = 13) during the perinatal phase and until 5 months of age. In the fetus, HR decreased from 77 ± 3 beats/min at 120 min before birth to 60 ± 1 beats/min at 5 min before birth (P <0.01). Within 30 min of birth, HR increased to 160 ± 9 beats/min (P <0.01). Salivary cortisol concentrations immediately after birth were 11.9 ± 3.6 ng/mL and within 2 h increased to a maximum of 52.5 ± 12.3 ng/mL (P <0.01). In conclusion, increases in HR and salivary cortisol concentrations in foals are not induced …

Effect of interscalene brachial plexus block on heart rate variability.

BACKGROUND: Interscalene brachial plexus block (ISB) may be followed by cardiovascular instability. Until date, there is no clear picture available about the underlying mechanisms of ISB. In this study, we aimed to determine the changes in heart rate variability (HRV) parameters after ISB and the differences between right- and left-sided ISBs. METHODS: We prospectively studied 24 patients operated for shoulder surgery in sitting position and divided them into two respective groups: R (right-sided block = 14 pts) and L (left-sided block = 10 pts). HRV data were taken before and 30 min after th…

Heart rate variability during antidepressant treatment with venlafaxine and mirtazapine.

Heart rate variability (HRV) reflects the cardiac autonomic regulation, and reduced HRV is considered a pathophysiological link between depression and cardiovascular mortality. So far, there is only limited information on the effects of venlafaxine and mirtazapine on HRV.We studied 28 nondepressed controls and 41 moderately depressed patients being treated with venlafaxine (n = 20) and mirtazapine (n = 21). Heart rate, blood pressure, and HRV were measured after a 6-day washout as well as after 14 and 28 days of treatment in supine and upright position. We found increased heart rate and reduced…

Heart rate responses to autonomic challenges in obstructive sleep apnea.

Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is accompanied by structural alterations and dysfunction in central autonomic regulatory regions, which may impair dynamic and static cardiovascular regulation, and contribute to other syndrome pathologies. Characterizing cardiovascular responses to autonomic challenges may provide insights into central nervous system impairments, including contributions by sex, since structural alterations are enhanced in OSA females over males. The objective was to assess heart rate responses in OSA versus healthy control subjects to autonomic challenges, and, separately, charac…

Heart rate variability and sensorimotor polyneuropathy in type 1 diabetes.

OBJECTIVE: Reduced heart rate variability (HRV) is classically viewed as an early phenomenon in diabetic sensorimotor polyneuropathy (DSP). We aimed to determine the characteristics of HRV across the spectrum of clinical DSP in type 1 diabetes. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: Eighty-nine diabetic subjects and 60 healthy volunteers underwent assessment of RR interval variation (RR(var)) during deep breathing and clinical and electrophysiological examination. We examined the distribution of age-standardized RR(var) across the spectrum of clinical DSP, identified variables associated with RR(var) i…

Heart rate variability abnormalities in young patients with dilated cardiomyopathy.

Heart rate variability (HRV) has become the conventionally accepted term for describing variations in both instantaneous heart rate and R-R intervals. In the pediatric age group, HRV has been investigated in healthy children, diabetics, respiratory distress syndrome of the newborn, and sudden infant death syndrome. This study aimed to evaluate HRV in pediatric patients with dilated cardiomyopathy and to compare it with that of age-matched normal subjects. The study evaluated 21 patients with dilated cardiomyopathy: 11 females (mean age, 7 ± 4 years; range, 2-17 years) and 10 males (mean age, 1…

Heart rate predicts outcomes in an implantable cardioverter-defibrillator population.

BACKGROUND: Elevated heart rate (HR) is associated with adverse cardiovascular events and total mortality in the general population and in individuals with heart disease. Our hypothesis was that mean HR predicts total mortality and heart failure hospitalization in patients undergoing implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD) implantation. METHODS AND RESULTS: The Inhibition of Unnecessary RV Pacing With AV Search Hysteresis in ICDs (INTRINSIC RV) trial included 1530 patients undergoing ICD implantation. After implantation of a dual-chamber ICD, patients were followed for a mean of 10.4 mon…

Correlation of sleep EEG frequency bands and Heart Rate Variability.

Sleep apnoea is a sleep breathing disorder which causes changes in cardiac and neuronal activity and discontinuities in sleep pattern when observed via electrocardiogram (ECG) and electroencephalogram (EEG). This paper presents a pilot study result of assessing the correlation between EEG frequency bands and ECG Heart Rate Variability (HRV) in normal and sleep apnoea human clinical patients at different sleep stages. In sleep apnoea patients, the results have shown that EEG delta, sigma and beta bands exhibited a strong correlation with cardiac HRV parameters at different sleep stages.

[Assessment of heart rate circadian rhythms in paroxysmal atrial fibrillation].

Heart rate (HR) variations during night sleep and in the early predawn period in healthy subjects and patients with paroxisms of artrial fibrillation were used to assess HR circadian rhythms. Daily ECG monitoring was performed in 19 healthy subjects (mean age 36.0 +/- 7.05 years) and patients with paroxisms of atrial fibrillation (mean age 55.15 +/- 3.91 years). In healthy subjects, HR responsiveness during night sleep and in the early predawn hours was more prominent than in patients with paroxisms of atrial fibrillation. The number of HR spikes at night was 20.42 +/- 3.73 and 14.23 +/- 2.8 (…

The relationship between resting heart rate and atherosclerosis risk factors.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: The imbalance between sympathetic and parasympathetic activity is one of the important factors in pathogenesis of cardiovascular diseases (CVD). There is a relationship between sympathetic activity and some CVD risk factors. Also heart rate (HR) is related to the autonomic nervous system. We analysed the relation of mean resting HR to hypertension, diabetes, obesity and to some risk factors [body mass index (BMI), hsCRP, systolic blood pressure (SBP), diastolic blood pressure (DBP), LDL cholesterol (LDL), triglycerides (TG) and glucose (G)]. METHODS: 6977 men and 7792 wome…

Effect of phototherapy on neonatal heart rate variability and complexity.

BACKGROUND: Phototherapy is a common mode of treatment for neonatal hyperbilirubinemia. However, phototherapy has been reported to alter cardiovascular function by causing increased peripheral blood flow, diminished cardiac output and increased sympathetic activity that may be of concern particularly in sick or premature newborns. The effects of phototherapy on the autonomic nervous system modulation of heart rate in term neonates have not yet been investigated. OBJECTIVES: The aim of the present study was to investigate the effects of phototherapy on the autonomic nervous system modulation o…
