The alterations in the clinical symptoms and the pacemaker function of the sinus node following open heart operation were studied in 26 patients suffering from atrial septal defect. The most characteristic electrophysiological change was the prolongation of the sinus node recovery time as consequence of surgical repair of the atrial septal defect. The clinical symptoms of the sick sinus syndrome could be detected in all 26 cases after the open heart surgery. In 16 patients the symptoms of iatrogenic sick sinus syndrome (SSS) were only transitory, while in 10 patients a stable iatrogenic SSS de

Blood cysts of the heart valves are commonly reported at postmortem examination of infants but are rare seen in older children and adults. A 42-year-old woman was referred to our hospital for cardiac evaluation because of dyspnea on exertion and heart murmur. There was no history of cyanosis or cardiac failure. Cardiac catheterization revealed valvular pulmonary stenosis and atrial septal defect. Right ventricular angiography showed the circular filling defect 0.7 x 0.7 cm in size at the suprapulmonary valve. However, this preoperative abnormal finding was diagnosed as a blood cyst after surge

A simple method of surgical atrial septectomy using a rongeur (Kerrison bone-cutting forceps), which is used in neurosurgery, is described. The closed rongeur is inserted into the left atrium through the right atrial appendage and the atrial septum. Then it is opened and the edge of the atrial septal defect and/or patent foramen ovale can be hooked by pulling slowly. The rongeur is then tightly closed again and pulled out together with the resected atrial specimen. This technique is safer and simpler than the Blalock-Hanlon technique or atrial septectomy with extra-corporeal circulation for ol

By examining all of 91,823 children born in 1980 in Bohemia, congenital heart disease was proved in 589 (6.415/1000 liveborns) and cardiomyopathy in 24 (0.261/1000 liveborns). Further 166 (1.808/1000 liveborns) were follow-up with a diagnosis of congenital heart disease by pediatric cardiologists in the field, but at the age of 4 years we didn't prove the defect any more. Prevalence of heart defects: ventricular septal defect (31.4%), atrial septal defect (11.4%), aortic stenosis (7.6%), pulmonary stenosis (7.1%), coarctation of the aorta (5.8%), transposition of the great arteries (5.4%), pat

BACKGROUND: Mild congenital heart diseases such as atrial septal defect, ventricular septal defect, patent ductus arteriosus, and pulmonary valve stenosis constitute a significant public health problem. Understanding long-term outcomes after interventions for mild congenital heart disease is essential to inform lifelong care.
METHODS: We queried the Pediatric Cardiac Care Consortium, a multicenter US-based registry of patients with congenital heart disease interventions, for patients undergoing surgical or transcatheter procedures for atrial septal defect, ventricular septal defect, patent du

Amplatzer devices are used for the percutaneous closure of ostium secundum atrial septal defects, muscular ventricular septal defects and patent ductus arteriosus. However, very little experience has been gained in using these devices in infants under 1 year of age. Between January 2001 and January 2008, 22 symptomatic infants aged under 1 year underwent percutaneous treatment: three had an ostium secundum atrial septal defect, 15 had patent ductus arteriosus, and four had a muscular ventricular septal defect. All the procedures were completed successfully. No immediate or medium-term complica

To compare the value of strain and strain rate imaging in assessing regional myocardial function to that of myocardial velocities, we studied 10 patients late after successful percutaneous atrial septal defect closure. Analysis was performed for atrial longitudinal peak systolic velocity, strain, and strain rate from the midsegment of interatrial septum, in correspondence of the device, and from the lateral left atrial wall. Placing the sample volume in the middle part of the atrial septal defect occluder, a bulky noncontractile element, passively moved by global heart motion, the new ultrason

Atrioventricular canal defects constitute about 3%-5% of total congenital heart defects, with a prevalence of 0.3-0.4/1000 live births. Mitral valve defects are associated with atrioventricular canal (septal) defects in most cases. Our case is of a 37-year-old male who underwent double patch closure of atrial and ventricular septal defects at the age of 24 years, now presenting with NYHA-III symptoms of severe mitral regurgitation and severe tricuspid regurgitation. The mitral valve was of atrio-ventricular canal type. We repaired both mitral and tricuspid valves using soft rings. Because of a

SUMMARY: Congenital heart disease (CHD) is one of the most common combined malformations of microtia. There is currently no specific study that investigates the relationship between microtia and CHD.
METHODS: This study collected microtia inpatients admitted from May 1, 2015 to July 31, 2016. The diagnosis of CHD was based on patient's symptoms, past history, and echocardiography. Pearson χ2 test was used to analyze the correlation between CHD and microtia.
RESULTS: A total of 30 cases (3.35%) were documented with CHD, including atrial septal defect (12/40.00%), ventricular septal defect (7/

Congenital heart disease occurs in about 20 percent of patients with Pierre Robin syndrome. Ventricular septal defect, patent ductus arteriosus, and atrial septal defect are the most common congenital cardiac lesions in this syndrome. The associated upper airway obstruction can produce cor pulmonale, cardiomegaly, pulmonary edema, and cyanosis.

BACKGROUND: The interatrial septum (IAS) is thought to be involved in the mechanism of persistent atrial fibrillation (PeAF). Simultaneous contact mapping of both sides of the IAS has not been performed previously.
OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was to describe wave front (WF) activation patterns and extent of left and right atrial septal electrical dissociation in patients with PeAF.
METHODS: Simultaneous mapping of both atrial septal surfaces using 2 high-density grid catheters was performed. Filtered electrograms of continuous atrial fibrillation, sinus rhythm (SR), and atrial paci

Complete heart block is a known association of atrioventricular septal defect. Bradycardia secondary to heart block can lead to abnormal QT prolongation and precipitate Torsades de Pointes and arrest. Here, a case report of these events is described, together with a brief literature review.

A 19-month-old male infant with Down syndrome was referred for investigation of heart murmur. An electrocardiogram showed normal axis (+100 degrees) of the QRS complex, incomplete right bundle branch block, and biventricular hypertrophy. Echocardiography revealed a ventricular septal defect (VSD) and a cleft of the anterior mitral leaflet with mild value regurgitation. The anterior mitral leaflet and the septal tricuspid leaflet attached to the same level of the ventricular septum were also delineated, however, no atrial septal defects were detected. Cardiac catheterization demonstrated pulmon

The development of a system that images intracardiac anatomy cross-sectionally while simultaneously displaying intracardiac blood flow in realtime has the potential of increasing diagnostic capabilities in the evaluation of congenital heart lesions. This would translate into the ability to visualize intracardiac lesions not identified by standard M-mode, two dimensional (2-D), pulsed, and continuous wave Doppler modalities. A review of 1000 consecutive studies in our laboratory was performed. Doppler color flow mapping was performed in each case after complete segmental analysis by 2-D and Dop

Embryonic heart and limb development are closely related with >100 known inherited disorders affecting both. Common limb defects include duplication, deficiencies, and hypoplasia. Ventricular septal defects and atrial septal defects are the commonest associated cardiac conditions. A positive association exists between heart defects and limb disorders when these disorders are analyzed separately. Closer associations exist between heart defects and upper limb defects compared with lower limb defects. The majority of limb defects occur in the more distal parts of the affected limb. BACKGROUND: Many novel techniques have been described for "minimally invasive" congenital cardiac operations to achieve an improved cosmetic result. There is little information on incorporation of such techniques into fast-track congenital heart operations.
METHODS: We have developed an approach to fast-track congenital heart operations, which includes a cosmetic approach for repair of congenital heart defects without sacrificing adequate exposure or requiring specialized equipment, along with a simple approach to intraoperative anesthetic management that allows extubation in the operating ro
