Remarkable progress has been achieved in developing improved serodiagnostic assays for a group of diseases for which other diagnostic methods are often lacking. Toxocariasis, trichinellosis, dirofilariasis, Taenia solium cysticercosis and the cystic and alveolar forms of hydatid disease are occult infections in humans and sometimes in lower animal hosts. Although Strongyloides stercoralis achieves patency in humans, parasitologic diagnosis is often very difficult. Efforts to develop reliable immunodiagnostic methods have spanned several decades but progress had been slow until recently. The co

Examination of 1905 arthropods from a swamp and surrounding pasture in sothern Louisiana revealed larval specimens of Mediorhynchus centurorum in 8 of 228 woodroaches, Parcoblatta pensylvanica, but in no other species. The life cycle was confirmed by feeding eggs of M. centurorum to laboratory-reared woodroaches. Cystacanths later recovered from the woodroaches developed into mature worms when pipetted into esophaguses of red-bellied woodpeckers, Centurus carolinius: red-headed woodpeckers, Melanerpes erythrocephalus; yellow-shafted flickers, Colaptes auratus; and a hairy woodpecker, Dendrocop

UNLABELLED: Soil transmitted helminthiasis and schistosomiasis are neglected tropical diseases (NTD), affecting the health status of endemic Malian populations. Mali has a national NTD elimination program using the mass drug administration (MDA) strategy combining Albendazole, Ivermectinand Praziquantel. Malaria still remains a public health problem in Mali. The Community health Center (CSCOM) in Kalifabougouvillage in the Kati health district has benefited from such MDA program since 2010.
AIM: To evaluate the prevalence rate of malaria, intestinal and urinary parasite infections in the loca…

Drug repurposing from veterinary to human medicine has been the main strategy to develop the four recommended human anthelminthics, albendazole, mebendazole, levamisole, and pyrantel pamoate, for the treatment of soil-transmitted helminthiasis. A systematic, head-to-head comparison of the anthelminthic activity profile of derivatives of these drugs and other anthelminthics developed in succession has not been conducted to date. We studied eight benzimidazoles, five macrocyclic lactones, tribendimidine, levamisole, and pyrantel pamoate in laboratory models of human intestinal nematode infection…

The objective of this paper was to systematically review the literature on the prevalence of selected infectious diseases among migrants/refugees of African origin and to provide policy makers and health care professionals with evidence-based information. We pursued a systematic review and meta-analysis to determine the prevalence of six selected infectious diseases (i.e., syphilis, helminthiasis, schistosomiasis, intestinal protozoa infections, hepatitis B, and hepatitis C) among migrants/refugees of African origin. Three electronic databases (i.e., PubMed, EMBASE, and ISI Web of Science) wer…

Strongyloides stercoralis is a parasite that can be acquired not only in tropical and subtropical areas, but also in some European countries. This helminthiasis is often a- or paucisymptomatic, and may persist in a latent state for several decades. In case of immunosuppression, a reactivation of the disease can occur, that may result in severe -- sometimes fatal -- complications, due to a syndrome of hyperinfestation. We present two cases of reactivation in patients suffering from lymphoma under chemotherapy. Screening of this parasite should be proposed for patients that have stayed in an end…

Two unusual autopsy cases of fatal Ascaris infection have been presented. The first case presents lethal diffuse peritonitis due to duodenal rupture caused by the presence of parasitic Ascaris worm in gastrointestinal tract of 2.5-year-old child. The second one is a case of subacute asphyxia caused by obturation of upper respiratory tract by a large number of adult Ascaris roundworms. General economic crisis and inefficient medical service make possible spreading of almost eradicated disease, thus the possibility of the most serious complications of this helminthiasis must not be forgotten.

The study was undertaken to characterize small intestinal absorption in patients with psoriasis concurrent with chronic opisthorchiasis. Sixty patients with psoriasis concurrent with chronic opisthorchiasis, 45 patients with psoriasis without helminthiasis, and 15 healthy individuals were examined. The absorptive function of the small intestine was studied by the Kamer method (fat absorption) and with the D-xylose (5 g) test (carbohydrate absorption). Impaired small intestinal absorption of fats and carbohydrates was found in patients with psoriasis concurrent with chronic opisthorchiasis. The…

Trichuris trichiura is one of four soil-transmitted helminth species that, collectively, are responsible for a considerable public health burden. The World Health Organization recommends preventive chemotherapy as the main intervention to eliminate soil-transmitted helminthiasis as a public health problem. Clinical trials estimated the efficacy of different drugs and treatment regimen against T. trichiura and other soil-transmitted helminth species, whilst meta-analyses and modeling efforts were conducted to determine the most efficacious drugs and drug combinations. Of note, the diagnostic er…

OBJ … ESULTS: We included 155 studies (231 articles) involving 262 299 participants. For soil-transmitted helminthiasis, MDA may reduce the prevalence of Ascaris, Trichuris, and hookworm by 58%, 36%, and 57%, respectively. We are uncertain of the effect of health education, WASH, and iron supplementation on soil-transmitted helminthiasis prevalence. For Schistosomias …

BACKGROUND: Plasmodium vivax is responsible for a significant portion of malaria cases worldwide, especially in Asia and Latin America, where geo-helminthiasis have a high prevalence. Impact of the interaction between vivax malaria and intestinal helminthes has been poorly explored. The objective of this study was to evaluate the influence of intestinal helminthiasis on the concentration of hemoglobin in children with Plasmodium vivax malaria in rural areas in the municipality of Careiro, in the Western Brazilian Amazon.

A programme periodically distributing anthelminthic drugs to school-aged children for the control of soiltransmitted helminthiasis was launched in Zanzibar in the early 1990s. We investigated the spatial distribution of soiltransmitted helminth infections, including Strongyloides stercoralis, in 336 children from six districts in Unguja, Zanzibar, in 2007. One stool sample per child was examined with the Kato-Katz, Koga agar plate and Baermann methods. The point prevalence of the different helminth infections was compared to the geological characteristics of the study sites. The observed preva…

BACKGROUND: Soil-transmitted helminth infections are common throughout the tropics and subtropics and they disproportionately affect the poorest of the poor. In view of a growing global commitment to control soil-transmitted helminthiasis, there is a need to elucidate the effect of repeated stool sampling and the use of different diagnostic methods in areas targeted for preventive chemotherapy that are characterized by low-infection intensities. In this study, we focused on schoolchildren on Unguja Island, Zanzibar, an area where anthelminthic drugs have been repeatedly administered over the p…

Iron-deficiency anemia (IDA) is common in the elderly population. It is usually the result of chronic gastrointestinal diseases which could lead to iron losses, malabsorption, or both. IDA is most often the result of chronic gastrointestinal blood loss caused by esophagitis, gastritis, ulcer, colon cancer, pre-malignant polyps, or angiodysplasia. We are presenting a unique case that describes the unusual finding of intestinal helminthiasis in an elderly patient during endoscopic evaluation for IDA. It also touches on the risk factors, clinical manifestations, diagnosis, and treatment of entero…

Healthy camels (Camelus dromedaris) and those naturally infected with trypanosomiasis, sarcoptic mange, and helminthiasis were compared as to ascorbic acid (vitamin C) contents of red blood cells, white blood cells, whole blood, plasma, and liver. The camels were kept under natural grazing conditions in Sudan. Reduced levels of vitamin C were found in camels with parasite infections, especially in animals with trypanosomiasis. It is suggested that the low vitamin C status in infected camels is caused by increased utilization and/or decreased synthesis of vitamin C.

When Plasmodium berghei and Strongyloides ratti are associated, each one of these parasites can modify development of the other one. This repercussion is subordinated to the respective periods of contamination and strength of influential parasitism. It lies in an inhibition of Protozoosis or intensification of helminthiasis. When severe, palustral infection releases two hypercosticosteronemy phases; the more important one is situated at the peak of the parasitemia. These hypercorticosteronemiae reactions to a severe malaria enable the interpretation of the variations of an associateds trongylo…

Prevalence of intestinal helminthiasis: 970 stool specimens are examined in Doualare and 999 in Doursongo (Maroua) North Cameroon. In this sample eggs of T. saginata are seen in 14.0% of the specimens, eggs of A. lumbricoides in 5.1%, N. americanus in 5.8% and S. mansoni in 2.1%. Eggs of T. trichiura, S. stercoralis and H. nana are found in less than 2% of the specimens. Stool examinations are performed in Doursongo before and after treatment with mebendazole: 94.1% of the inhabitants with A. lumbricoides eggs in their stools are free of this parasite after treatment, with T. trichiura 83.3% a…

The study of ascaridiasis in a single locality of the Cap Bon region (Tunisia) where prevalence of this helminthiasis is much higher than anywhere else in the region, shows that 71,1% of the population is infected and all ages approximately in the same proportion. This high prevalence can be explained by a cumulative effect of two transmission factors: a particular construction of houses, which have a kind of reservoir for organic wastes in direct connection with the street, and the use of human excrements in agriculture. Mass chemotherapy every 3 months during several consecutive years is pro…

With the aim of finding more potential inhibitors against NADH-fumarate reductase (specific target for treating helminthiasis and cancer) from natural resources, Talaromyces wortmannii was treated with the epigenome regulatory agent suberoylanilide hydroxamic acid, which resulted in the isolation of four new wortmannilactones derivatives (wortmannilactones I-L, 1-4). The structures of these new compounds were elucidated based on IR, HRESIMS and NMR spectroscopic data analyses. These four new compounds showed potent inhibitory activity against NADH-fumarate reductase with the IC50 values rangin…

Nowaday, zoonoses are an important cause of human parasitic diseases worldwide and a major threat to the socio-economic development, mainly in developing countries. Importantly, zoonotic helminths that affect human eyes (HIE) may cause blindness with severe socio-economic consequences to human communities. These infections include nematodes, cestodes and trematodes, which may be transmitted by vectors (dirofilariasis, onchocerciasis, thelaziasis), food consumption (sparganosis, trichinellosis) and those acquired indirectly from the environment (ascariasis, echinococcosis, fascioliasis).
