This article describes a Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) -guided High-Intensity Focused Ultrasound (HIFU) robotic system for the treatment of uterine fibroids. The study presents the development and sensor-based accuracy assessment of the robotic system. The positioning accuracy was assessed in free space using a three-dimensional coordinate measuring machine (CMM) and verified in phantom study and ex vivo with porcine tissue. Average positioning accuracy with a standard deviation of 0.37 ± 0.17 mm was achieved with CMM, 0.9 ± 0.4 mm in the phantom study, and 0.9 ± 0.6 mm with porcine tissue.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Magnetic resonance-guided focused ultrasound (MRgFUS) is a nonsurgical treatment for Parkinson disease (PD). Some selected anatomical structures can be targeted by MRgFUS in PD. However, there is no uniform target yet. We have reported that stepwise dual-target MRgFUS was successfully applied to treat refractory tremors with akinetic-rigid features in PD. It generated two precise thermal ablations in the ventral intermediate nucleus (VIM) and pallidothalamic tract (PTT). PURPOSE: To evaluate the feasibility and effectiveness of ultrasound-guided percutaneous microwave ablation (MWA) for the treatment of symptomatic uterine fibroids.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A single-center retrospective study was conducted on 17 patients, mean age 37.5 years (SD ± 7.3; range 19-47 years) with symptomatic uterine fibroid who underwent MWA between September 2018 and December 2022. Outcomes included volume reduction of uterine fibroids, hemoglobin levels, uterine fibroid symptoms, and health-related quality-of-life questionnaire scores before and 12 months after ablation.

BACKGROUND: Tremor is a disabling condition, common to several neurodegenerative diseases. Lesioning procedures and deep brain stimulation, respectively, of the ventralis intermedius nucleus for intentional tremor, and of the subthalamic nucleus for parkinsonian resting tremor, have been introduced in clinical practice for patients refractory to medical treatment. The combination of high-energy focused ultrasound (HIFUS) with sophisticated magnetic resonance (MR) instrumentation, together with accurate knowledge of the stereotactic brain coordinates, represents a revolution in neuromodulation.
