Evaluating the impact of neonicotinoids on aquatic non-target species: A comprehensive review.

Neonicotinoid insecticides (NNIs) are the fastest-growing class in agricultural protection. They target nicotinic acetylcholine receptors (nAChR) in pests, stimulating the nervous system at low doses and causing paralysis and death at higher concentrations. NNIs are used in crop protection, seed treatment, forestry, agriculture, and flea control in domestic cattle. Effective at lower concentrations and offering long-term control, NNIs are favoured for their systemic activity. However, due to their water solubility, mobility, and moderate persistence, NNIs easily contaminate adjacent aquatic en

Parent-child relationship quality moderates the link between marital conflict and adolescents' physiological responses to social evaluative threat.

This study examined how marital conflict and parent-child relationship quality moderate individual differences in adolescents' adrenocortical and autonomic nervous system (ANS) responses to social evaluative threat. Saliva samples (later assayed for cortisol and alpha-amylase, sAA) were collected from 153 youth (52% female; ages 10-17 years) before and after, and cardiovascular activity was assessed before and during, the Trier Social Stress Test (TSST). Marital conflict predicted higher levels of sAA reactivity but lower levels of heart rate (HR) reactivity. Parent-child relationship quality

[Neurological manifestations of type 1 Gaucher's disease: Is a revision of disease classification needed?].

INTRODUCTION: Gaucher's disease (GD), the most prevalent inherited lysosomal storage disorder, is caused by deficient glucocerebrosidase activity. The resulting accumulation of glucocerebrosides in lysosomes of macrophages leads to hepatosplenomegaly, anemia, thrombocytopenia, and various bone manifestations. Gaucher's disease is classified into 3 types based on the nature of its effects on the central nervous system. Type 1, the most common variant, is classically nonneuronopathic. However, the occurrence of Parkinsonism seems to be more frequent in type I Gaucher's disease than in the genera

Extraordinary changes in excitatory amino acid levels in cerebrospinal fluid of influenza-associated encephalopathy of children.

The correlation between the glutamate-glutamine cycle and nitric oxide (NO) production in the central nervous system (CNS) of a new type of influenza-associated encephalopathy in children is discussed. When measurements of several amino acids and NOx (nitrite/nitrate) levels in the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) using HPLC-fluorescence and -UV methods, respectively, were made. the CSF glutamate levels of patients with the new type of encephalitis were significantly lower, and both glutamine and NOx levels were significantly higher than those of the control group and the patients of the meningitis g

[Optimal level of EEG coherence and its importance in evaluating the functional state of the human brain].

The study of EEG by means of computer analysis 46 healthy subjects and more than 100 patients with different disturbances of consciousness showed that one of the necessary conditions for performance of reactions to external stimuli and higher nervous activity consists in the maintainance of optimal level of coherence of brain electric processes, corresponding to the optimal cortical tone. Different depths of disturbances revealed different coherence deviations from the optimal level: its overall decrease in case of deep disturbances (coma), a sharp (pessimal) rise in the low frequency rang in …

EXPRESS: Cardiac Sympathetic Dysfunction in Pulmonary Arterial Hypertension: Lesson from Left-sided Heart Failure.

Sympathetic nervous system hyperactivity has a well-recognized role in the pathophysiology of heart failure with reduced left ventricular ejection fraction. Alterations in sympathetic nervous system have been related to the pathophysiology of pulmonary arterial hypertension, but it is unclear whether cardiac sympathetic nervous system is impaired and how sympathetic dysfunction correlates with hemodynamics and clinical status in pulmonary arterial hypertension patients. The aim of this study was to evaluate the cardiac sympathetic nervous system activity by means of 123Iodine-metaiodobenzylgua

Acute effects of different resistance training loads on cardiac autonomic modulation in hypertensive postmenopausal women.

BACKGROUND: Individuals with arterial hypertension often have an autonomic nervous system (ANS) imbalance with predominance of sympathetic ANS. This predominance can lead to injury of several organs affecting its functioning. There is evidence that performing high intensity resistance training (RT) with heavier loads and a lower number of repetitions results in lower cardiovascular stress when compared with lighter loads and a higher number of repetitions. However, the effects of different protocols of RT in autonomic modulation are not known. Therefore, the aim of the study was to analyze and

Influence of thoracic epidural anesthesia on gastric oxygenation during hypothermia and hemorrhage.

OBJECTIVE: Hypothermia preserves gastric mucosal microvascular oxygenation (μHbO2) during hemorrhagic shock. Additionally, hypothermia activates the sympathetic nervous system that leads to the release of vasopressin. The aim of this study was to evaluate whether the effect of hypothermia is mediated via the sympathetic nervous system and/or via vasopressin. METHODS: In prospective and randomized experiments on five anesthetized dogs (foxhounds, cross-over design, 6 groups with n=5 per group) we analyzed the effects of hemorrhage on μHbO2 during mild hypothermia (HT, 34 °C), during additional

Influence of the polyol pathway on norepinephrine transporter reduction in diabetic cardiac sympathetic nerves: implications for heterogeneous accumulation of MIBG.

PURPOSE: Cardiac scintigraphic studies using 123I-labeled metaiodobenzylguanidine ([123I]MIBG) have demonstrated heterogeneous myocardial accumulation of MIBG in diabetes. The accumulation has been found to correlate with a heterogeneous decrease in the expression of norepinephrine transporter (NET). In diabetic peripheral nerve tissue, polyol pathways are activated and cause nerve dysfunction and degeneration. However, there has been little research on the polyol pathway and cardiac sympathetic nerves. Therefore, to assess the influence of the polyol pathway on cardiac sympathetic nervous fun

Peripheral and autonomic nervous system involvement in spinocerebellar ataxia type 3: unveiling an invisible burden.

BACKGROUND: Neuropathological examinations in spinocerebellar ataxia type 3 (SCA3) have demonstrated peripheral and autonomic nervous system degeneration, but the impact of associated symptoms on genetically affected individuals at different disease stages remains understudied. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the clinical burden of peripheral and autonomic nervous system involvement in SCA3 mutation carriers across the disease spectrum. METHODS: Forty SCA3 mutation carriers, including ten pre-ataxic individuals, completed questionnaires about muscle cramps, neuropathic pain, autonomic symptoms, ac

Heart rate variability and heart rate in a sample of medicated and unmedicated adolescents with obsessive-compulsive disorder.

OBJECTIVE: Alterations in autonomic nervous system activity - measured by heart rate variability (HRV) and heart rate (HR) - have been proposed as a relevant biopsychological mechanism in several psychiatric disorders. However, only few studies have examined these parameters in OCD, and evidence from pediatric samples is particularly limited. The aim of this study was to investigate autonomic activity in pediatric OCD. METHODS: A five minute resting state electrocardiogram was recorded in adolescents with OCD (n = 64) and age- and IQ-matched healthy controls (HC, n = 52). Autonomic activity w

B-cell activity markers are associated with different disease activity domains in primary Sjögren's syndrome.

OBJECTIVES: B-cell activating factor (BAFF), β-2 microglobulin (β2M) and serum free light chains (FLCs) are elevated in primary SS (pSS) and associated with disease activity. We aimed to investigate their association with the individual disease activity domains of the EULAR Sjögren's Syndrome Disease Activity Index (ESSDAI) in a large well-characterized pSS cohort. METHODS: Sera from pSS patients enrolled in the UK Primary Sjögren's Syndrome Registry (UKPSSR) (n = 553) and healthy controls (n = 286) were analysed for FLC (κ and λ), BAFF and β2 M. Pearson correlation coefficients were calculat

Modulation of pineal activity during the 23rd sunspot cycle: melatonin rise during the ascending phase of the cycle is accompanied by an increase of the sympathetic tone.

In two groups of female CD-rats nocturnal urine (19-23 h, 23-3 h, 3-7 h) was collected at monthly intervals over 658 days (I: 1997-1999) and 494 days (II: 1999-2000) coinciding with the ascending limb (1996-2000) of the 23rd sunspot cycle (1996-2008). The excretion of 6-sulfatoxymelatonin (aMT6s: I, II) was determined as well as the ratio of noradrenaline/adrenaline (NA/A: I) reflecting the activity of the sympathetic nervous system. AMT6s was higher in II than I (19-7 h: +24%; P < 0.001; 23-3 h: +30% and 3-7 h: +17%, P < 0.001), and progressively increased (19-23 h) showing linear regressions

TALE-class homeodomain transcription factors, homothorax and extradenticle, control dendritic and axonal targeting of olfactory projection neurons in the Drosophila brain.

Precise neuronal connectivity in the nervous system depends on specific axonal and dendritic targeting of individual neurons. In the Drosophila brain, olfactory projection neurons convey odor information from the antennal lobe to higher order brain centers such as the mushroom body and the lateral horn. Here, we show that Homothorax (Hth), a TALE-class homeodomain transcription factor, is expressed in many of the antennal lobe neurons including projection neurons and local interneurons. In addition, HTH is expressed in the progenitors of the olfactory projection neurons, and the activity of ht

Intrinsic migratory properties of cultured Schwann cells based on single-cell migration assay.

The migration of Schwann cells is critical for development of peripheral nervous system and is essential for regeneration and remyelination after nerve injury. Although several factors have been identified to regulate Schwann cell migration, intrinsic migratory properties of Schwann cells remain elusive. In this study, based on time-lapse imaging of single isolated Schwann cells, we examined the intrinsic migratory properties of Schwann cells and the molecular cytoskeletal machinery of soma translocation during migration. We found that cultured Schwann cells displayed three motile phenotypes,

Beta-bungarotoxin-induced cell-death of neurons in chick retina.

The cytotoxicity of beta-bungarotoxin (beta-BTX), a snake venom neurotoxin with phospholipase A2 activity, for chick neurons was investigated using organ and monolayer cultures of retina. Beta-BTX led to a marked reduction in the total activities of choline acetyltransferase and glutamate decarboxylase of retina cultures at concentrations as low as 100 pM. The total activity of lactate dehydrogenase was, however, much less affected by beta-BTX. Also, the total activity of tyrosine hydroxylase of organ-cultured retina decreased only at 30-50 fold higher concentrations of the toxin. The total ac

Cyclic amp concentration and enzyme activities of cerebrospinal fluid in patients with epilepsy or central nervous system damage.

Cyclic adenosine-3',5'-monophosphate (cAMP) concentration in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) was measured by the protein binding method of Gilman from 62 neurological patients, 46 of them were epileptics and 16 with a central nervous system (CNS) damage. In epileptic patients the CSF concentration of cAMP was significantly elevated (p smaller than 0.02) for 3 days after an attack when compared with those free from attacks for at least 2 weeks. The causality relationship between the rise of cAMP in CSF and an epileptic discharge is discussed. In patient with an active or rapidly progressing CNS damag

Hearing loss-related altered neuronal activity in the inferior colliculus.

Hearing loss is well known to cause plastic changes in the central auditory system and pathological changes such as tinnitus and hyperacusis. Impairment of inner ear functions is the main cause of hearing loss. In aged individuals, not only inner ear dysfunction but also senescence of the central nervous system is the cause of malfunction of the auditory system. In most cases of hearing loss, the activity of the auditory nerve is reduced, but that of the successive auditory centers is increased in a compensatory way. It has been reported that activity changes occur in the inferior colliculus (
