Multiple discriminations experienced by people living with HIV in France: results from the ANRS-Vespa2 study.

Since the advent of AIDS, discrimination has remained at the core of the experience of people living with HIV (PLHIV). PLHIV who belong to minority groups are exposed to discrimination not only on the grounds of their HIV infection but also because of rejecting attitudes towards drug users, homosexuals and black people. This article aimed to measure the frequency of discrimination and assess its correlates among PLHIV in France. We used data from a national representative survey, the ANRS-Vespa2 study, conducted in France in 2011 among 3022 male and female HIV-positive patients followed at hos

HIV/STD pattern and its associated risk factors among male STD clinic attendees in China: a foci for HIV intervention.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies suggested a high prevalence of STDs including HIV among female sex workers and men who have sex with men in China, but little was known about the prevalence in male patients attending public STD clinics. The aim of this study was to investigate STD patterns and HIV prevalence among male STD clinic attendees in different areas in China and the associated risk factors. The feasibility of Provider-initiated HIV testing and counseling (PITC) was evaluated as well. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted at 46 public STD clinics in 4 provinces in China. Neurocognitive and personality factors in homo- and heterosexual pedophiles and controls.

INTRODUCTION: Several neuropsychological studies have suggested an association between pedophilia, neurocognitive disturbances, and specific personality profiles. However, inconsistencies in the findings have not been explained sufficiently, because many studies did not control for possible confounding factors, such as age, education level, or gender orientation. AIM: Therefore, the present investigation examined neurocognitive performance and personality profiles in pedophiles in dependence of sexual gender preferences and sexual deviance, as well as with regard to age and education level.

Cancer incidence in a cohort of human immunodeficiency virus seroconverters. HIV Italian Seroconversion Study Group.

BACKGROUND: In addition to Kaposi's sarcoma and non-Hodgkin's lymphomas, it has been postulated that human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection may increase the risk of other cancers. The aim of the current study was to compare incidence rates of cancer among individuals who seroconverted for HIV infection with the rates in the general population of Italy. METHODS: This study is part of an ongoing cohort investigation conducted by the HIV Italian Seroconversion Study Group. The study has enrolled 1255 individuals (906 males and 349 females) between the ages of 20 and 49 years who are at ris

The epidemic dynamics of HIV-1 in Italy: modelling the interaction between intravenous drug users and heterosexual population.

Data gathered through the Latium HIV Surveillance System were used in conjunction with a compartmental mathematical model to describe the transmission dynamics of HIV-1 in Italy. In the Latium region, as in the rest of Italy, fewer than 1 in 5 cumulative cases of AIDS are attributable to male homosexual transmission, while 55-60 per cent of the cases have been observed among intravenous drug users (IVDUs). Moreover, the number of non-drug-using heterosexual cases is increasing (14 per cent of cumulative cases). Anonymous notification of positive HIV-1 tests, mandatory in Latium since 1985, wer

Homosexual signification: a moral construct in social contexts.

Contemporary attempts to define homophobia argue that it is a composite prejudice reflecting attitudes toward masculinity, sexual license, and social norms. Influenced by studies of other forms of prejudice, researchers have focused on trying to identify characteristics of a "homophobic personality". Strategies to reduce homophobia emphasize education and tolerance. There has yet to be an engaged, respectful discussion of the validity of the fears which constitute the phobia in homophobia. This paper suggests a taxonomy of moral themes which recur in arguments against homosexuality. Judeo-Chri

Tuberculosis incidence trends and risk factors among people living with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) in Sichuan, China: a retrospective cohort study (2010-2024).

BACKGROUND: To retrospectively analyse the tuberculosis (TB) incidence rate and influencing factors among people living with HIV (PLHIV) in Sichuan, China, from 2010 to 2024 and to inform HIV/TB coinfection prevention. METHODS: A dynamic cohort of PLHIV was established (2010‒2024) to estimate the TB incidence rate. A nested case‒control study was used to identify factors influencing TB incidence via logistic regression. RESULTS: From 2010 to 2024, 1,677,649 person-years (PY) of follow-up were accumulated, with an average follow-up of 5.57 years. The number of HIV/TB coinfections rose from 79

Perceived health-related quality of life in people living with HIV co-infected with SARS-CoV-2 in France.

PURPOSE: We aimed to assess health-related quality of life (HRQL) and its correlates among people living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHA) co-infected with SARS-CoV-2 in France. METHODS: This cross-sectional was study conducted among PLWHA co-infected with SARS-CoV-2. HRQL was measured using the four dimensions of the PROQOL-HIV scale. Factors associated with each dimension were identified using linear regression. RESULTS: mean (SD) scores for HRQL dimensions: 76.7 (± 21.1) for Physical Health and Symptoms (PHS), 79.2 (± 23.6) for Social Relationships (SR), 67.3 (± 27.4) for Mental and Cognitive (MC), a

High prevalence of sexually transmitted infections and risk factors among HIV-positive individuals in Yunnan, China.

BACKGROUND: Yunnan has the highest rates of HIV in China. Other treatable sexually transmitted infections (STIs) are associated with accelerated HIV transmission and poor ART outcomes, but are only diagnosed by syndromic algorithms. METHODS: We recruited 406 HIV-positive participants for a cross-sectional study (204 ART-naive and 202 receiving ART). Blood samples and first-voided urine samples were collected. Real-time polymerase chain reaction methods were used for diagnosing Chlamydia trachomatis (CT), Neisseria gonorrhea (NG) and Mycoplasma genitalium (MG). Syphilis and herpes simplex viru

Spectrum of skin disorders in human immunodeficiency virus-infected patients in Singapore and the relationship to CD4 lymphocyte counts.

BACKGROUND: Skin disorders are extremely common and cause significant morbidity in human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-infected individuals. There are few data on their prevalence and association with CD4 counts in Asians. AIM: To evaluate the prevalence of skin disorders in ambulatory HIV-infected individuals attending a specialized skin clinic in Singapore and the association with the degree of immunosuppression. METHODS: A cross-sectional study on skin disorders in HIV-positive outpatients in the Communicable Disease Centre of Singapore was performed. The association between skin disease p

Visceral leishmaniasis and HIV-1 co-infection in southern France.

Between 1986 and 1993 visceral leishmaniasis (VL) was diagnosed in 50 adult patients with human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) infection (8 females, 42 males: 31 intravenous drug users, 11 homosexual or bisexual men, 6 heterosexual individuals, 2 blood recipients) from 5 hospital centres in southern France. Diagnosis of VL was by demonstration of Leishmania and isolation of promastigotes by culture in Novy-McNeal-Nicolle medium. Leishmania isolates were identified by their isoenzyme profile in 28 patients. All the patients were immunocompromised when VL was diagnosed. Their median CD4 c

Risk for experiencing psychological and sexual abuse on- and offline: a comparison of bisexual, gay/lesbian, and heterosexual women and men.

Dating abuse research on lesbian, gay, and bisexual (LGB) populations tends to aggregate LGB participants for comparisons with heterosexuals and often excludes nonassaultive dating abuse and abuse that takes place on online dating applications. In the present study, we used the Pew Research Center's 2019 American Trends Panel Wave 56 data set (n = 4712) to compare ever experiencing several types of nonassaultive on- and offline dating abuse between bisexual women (n = 402), lesbian women (n = 207), heterosexual women (n = 1802), bisexual men (n = 225), gay men (n = 575), and heterosexual men (
