During the 13 years 1960-1972, in a teaching hospital that serves a predominantly rural and semiurban population in southern India, there were 74,384 deliveries and 1245 maternal deaths, a maternal mortality rate of 16.7 per 1000 births. Direct obstetric factors caused 854 (65.5%) of these deaths. The leading indirect or associated causes of maternal deaths were anemia, cerebrovascular accidents, and infectious hepatitis. During the past 13 years, monthly maternal mortality meetings have helped to reduce the incidence of avoidable factors in maternal deaths among patients from the city but not

BACKGROUND: Infective endocarditis (IE) is associated with high morbidity and mortality. However, the impact of geriatric syndromes on clinical outcomes in elderly patients with IE remains insufficiently characterized. The aim was to assess the prevalence of geriatric syndromes; focusing on frailty, functional dependence, comorbidity and malnutrition; and their association with in-hospital mortality in advanced-age patients with infective endocarditis.
METHODS: This prospective multicenter observational registry included patients aged ≥ 75 years with possible or definitive IE. Comprehensive g…

PURPOSE: Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is characterized by unpredictable patterns of exacerbations, making continuity of care (CoC) a critical component in disease management. CoC influences COPD exacerbation-related hospitalization and mortality. Therefore, we assessed the impact of CoC levels on subsequent hospital admissions and all-cause mortality among individuals with COPD.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: This retrospective nationwide cohort study utilized National Health Insurance Service-Senior cohort data (2002-2019) and included 29,316 patients newly diagnosed with COPD. The pr

PURPOSE: Numerous studies have shown that the atherogenic index of plasma (AIP) is a strong predictor of the risk of cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) and an independent predictor of cardiovascular events (CEs) and related mortality. The predictive value of AIP for in-hospital mortality (IHM) in individuals with sepsis remains uncertain. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the association between AIP and IHM among patients with sepsis using a large sample from the Medical Information Mart for Intensive Care (MIMIC) database.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Individuals with sepsis were identified f…

BackgroundIdentifying clinical and socio-economic predictors of adverse health outcomes in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) patients is imperative for reducing exacerbation and mortality rates.MethodsThe COPD Community Disease Management (COPD-CDM) clinical trial evaluated the efficacy of a disease management program among 1202 ambulatory COPD patients receiving recommended care. The study did not find disease management to be superior to recommended care only, in preventing COPD hospital admissions or mortality. This post-hoc analysis examined the association of clinical and socio

BACKGROUND: The vital statistics in the third world countries are poor and have witnessed minimal improvement over the years with childhood mortality in Nigeria remaining one of the highest among the developing countries despite various child survival programmes. Child survival strategies can only be efficient if the major reasons for morbidity are known. The objective of this retrospective study was to review the patterns of childhood mortality at the emergency room of the Federal Teaching Hospital, Ido-Ekiti (FETHI).
MATERIALS AND METHODS: This study was conducted at the Children Emergency

Tuberculosis (TB) mortality in Zambia remains high at 86 per 100,000 populations, translating to approximately 15,000 TB-related deaths annually. We conducted a nationwide retrospective cohort study to understand predictors, time to death, and probable causes of mortality among persons on TB treatment in Zambia. We reviewed medical records for persons with TB registered in 54 purposively selected hospitals in Zambia between January and December 2019. We fitted a Cox proportional hazards model to identify predictors of mortality. Of the 13,220 records abstracted, 10,987 were analyzed after excl

INTRODUCTION: Data on factors related to mortality in patients with bronchiectasis exacerbation are insufficient. Computed tomography (CT) can measure the pectoralis muscle area (PMA) and is a useful tool to diagnose sarcopenia. This study aimed to evaluate whether PMA can predict mortality in patients with bronchiectasis exacerbation.
METHODS: Patients hospitalized due to bronchiectasis exacerbation at a single center were retrospectively divided into survivors and non-survivors based on 1-year mortality. Thereafter, a comparison of the clinical and radiologic characteristics was conducted b

IMPORTANCE: The incidence of epidermal necrolysis (EN), including Stevens-Johnson syndrome (SJS) and toxic epidermal necrolysis (TEN), varies across studies. While in-hospital mortality rates range from 15% to 20%, contributors to long-term mortality have been rarely evaluated and remain unknown.
OBJECTIVE: To assess the incidence of and compare factors associated with in-hospital mortality and postdischarge mortality and sequelae among patients with EN.
DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This cohort study used French Health System data from January 1, 2013, to December 31, 2022, and include…

Hypopituitarism is a highly heterogeneous multisystem disorder that can have a major impact on long-term morbidity and mortality, but even more so during acute medical conditions requiring hospitalization. Recent studies suggest a significant in-hospital burden with prolonged length of stay, increased rate of intensive care unit (ICU) admission, and initiation of mechanical ventilation - all of which may lead to an increased risk of in-hospital mortality. On the one hand, patients with hypopituitarism are often burdened by metabolic complications, including obesity, hypertension, dyslipidemia,…
