The influence of physician-hospital integration on physician communication and patient experience: Evidence from U.S. private acute care hospitals.

BACKGROUND: Various forms of Physician-Hospital Integration (PHI) have occurred across the U.S. health care delivery system, and research has shown that the structure and characteristics of PHI models may influence various aspects of hospital performance. PURPOSE: This study explores the relationship between different PHI types and patient experience (PX), with a specific interest in the influence of these structures on physician communication and overall hospital ratings. METHODOLOGY: Using a Generalized Estimating Equations model, we analyzed data from 2,716 U.S. acute care hospitals (n=2,

"It's been an Experience, a Life Learning Experience": A Qualitative Study of Hospitalized Patients with Substance Use Disorders.

BACKGROUND: Individuals with substance use disorders (SUD) have high rates of chronic illness and readmission, yet few are engaged in addiction treatment. Hospitalization may be a reachable moment for initiating and coordinating addiction care, but little is known about motivation for change in the inpatient setting. OBJECTIVE: To explore the experiences of hospitalized adults with SUD and to better understand patient and system level factors impacting readiness for change. DESIGN: We performed a qualitative study using individual interviews. The study was nested within a larger mixed-method

To tell you the truth: children reflect on hospital care.

Children enter hospitals as novices and leave them as social critics. Their "take" on the environment and their reaction to care received are outcome measures too often neglected in our fast-paced health care arena. This article publishes the evaluations of these young patients to an audience of health professionals ... practitioners who might be moved by such poignant expressions of thanks and motivated by such thoughtful prescriptions for reform. Much of the data were gathered during the development of the Web site, "Band-Aides and Blackboards: When Chronic Illness ... Or Some Other Medical

Association of opioid use disorder with outcomes of hospitalizations for acute myocardial infarction in the United States.

OBJECTIVE: While Opioid Use Disorder (OUD) has been linked to inferior clinical outcomes, studies examining the clinical outcomes and readmission of OUD patients experiencing Acute Myocardial Infarction (AMI) remain lacking. The authors analyze the clinical and financial outcomes of OUD in a contemporary cohort of AMI hospitalizations. METHODS: All non-elective adult (≥ 18 years) hospitalizations for AMI were tabulated from the 2016‒2019 Nationwide Readmissions Database using relevant International Classification of Disease codes. Patients were grouped into OUD and non-OUD cohorts. Bivariate

Does drinking water influence hospital-admitted sialolithiasis on an epidemiological level in Denmark?

OBJECTIVES: Sialolithiasis, or salivary stones, is not a rare disease of the major salivary glands. However, the aetiology and incidence remain largely unknown. Since sialoliths are comprised mainly of calcium phosphate salts, we hypothesise that drinking water calcium levels and other elements in drinking water could play a role in sialolithiasis. Owing to substantial intermunicipality differences in drinking water composition, Denmark constitutes a unique environment for testing such relations. DESIGN: An epidemiological study based on patient data extracted from the National Patient Regist

PARENTS 2 study protocol: pilot of Parents' Active Role and ENgagement in the review of Their Stillbirth/perinatal death.

BACKGROUND: The perinatal mortality review meeting that takes place within the hospital following a stillbirth or neonatal death enables clinicians to learn vital lessons to improve care for women and their families for the future. Recent evidence suggests that parents are unaware that a formal review following the death of their baby takes place. Many would welcome the opportunity to feedback into the meeting itself. Parental involvement in the perinatal mortality review meeting has the potential to improve patient satisfaction, drive improvements in patient safety and promote an open culture

A state-wide review of hospital postnatal care in Victoria, Australia: the views and experiences of midwives.

OBJECTIVE: to describe midwives' views and experiences of the provision and organisation of hospital-based postnatal care. DESIGN: semi-structured interviews with key informants who provide hospital-based postnatal care. SETTING: public hospitals in Victoria, Australia. PARTICIPANTS: clinical midwives and midwifery managers (n=33). FINDINGS: midwives remain positive about working in hospital-based postnatal care; however, their satisfaction is influenced by barriers to effective care beyond their control, which specifically limit the time available to spend with women. They described many

Closing the audit loop: a patient satisfaction survey.

A patient satisfaction survey was carried out in a nuclear medicine department of a large acute hospital. Surveys were initially carried out by interview and postal techniques, with approximately 100 responders in each category. The responses to each question were not significantly different for the two types of survey, although overall there was a significantly larger number of dissatisfied responses in the postal survey (22%) compared with the interview study (12%). The postal survey was repeated after 1 year, thus completing the audit loop. A significant reduction in dissatisfied responses

Problematic hospital experiences among adult patients with sickle cell disease.

BACKGROUND: Adults with sickle cell disease (SCD) have often reported difficulties obtaining care during vaso-occlusive crisis (VOC) in qualitative studies. METHODS: We measured the experiences of 45 SCD patients who received in-hospital care for VOC using the Picker Patient Experience Questionnaire (PPE-15), and used the one sample binomial test to compare with national norms. RESULTS: Most SCD patients reported that they were insufficiently involved in decisions (86%), staff gave conflicting information (64%), it wasn't easy to find someone to discuss concerns (61%), doctors' answers to qu

Patient, provider, and clinic characteristics associated with public STD clinic patient satisfaction.

OBJECTIVES: There is a lack of information describing levels of patient satisfaction among patients seeking sexually transmitted diseases (STD) care in a public clinic setting. We sought to identify patient, provider, and clinic characteristics associated with patient satisfaction within public STD clinics. METHODS: A cross sectional survey with random sampling was conducted among patients attending two public STD clinics. Satisfaction was assessed using questions from validated national surveys. Outcomes for multivariate logistic regression analysis were ratings of overall health care and cl

Attachment Between Nurses and Patients in Hospital Settings: Concept Analysis Using Walker and Avant's Method.

RATIONALE: Although attachment is a key concept in human relationships, nurse-patient attachment in clinical settings has not been clearly defined. AIM: To clarify the concept of nurse-patient attachment from the patient's perspective. METHOD: Walker and Avant's eight-step concept analysis framework was employed. A systematic search was conducted in databases including PubMed, CINAHL, Web of Science, and PsycINFO for peer-reviewed studies published from 2000 to March 2026. Inclusion criteria focused on nurse-patient interactions, attachment theory in clinical settings, and patient-reported e

Exploring patient safety risk in an emergency ward for substance use through a mixed-method analysis.

BACKGROUND: There is limited knowledge of how psychiatric patient safety measures can detect and understand risk as an emergent property within a healthcare system. Overcrowding poses a risk for patient safety in psychiatric emergency wards and is associated with increased mortality and violence. This paper aims to explore patterns of risk emergence in a psychiatric ward and provide insights into the dynamics of workload pressure. METHOD: A case study was conducted in a psychiatric emergency ward for patients with substance use disorders. The study employed a four-phased mixed-methods design.

Characteristics of elderspeak communication in hospital dementia care: Findings from The Nurse Talk observational study.

BACKGROUND: Elderspeak communication is typically viewed as patronizing and infantilizing by older adults and can lead to resistive behaviors in persons living with dementia. Little is known about the presence of elderspeak communication in hospitals in the United States. Understanding this phenomenon in the hospital setting is needed in order to improve hospital dementia care. OBJECTIVES: The purpose of the Nurse Talk study was to (1) describe attributes of elderspeak use in hospital dementia care and to (2) determine what characteristics are associated with nursing staff use of elderspeak c

Continuum of care in hospitalized patients with opioid or stimulant use disorder and infectious complications of drug use-substance use/infectious disease integrated clinic compared to treatment as usual to prevent infection-related readmission (CHOICE-STAR): a study protocol for an effectiveness-implementation randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: People who inject drugs (PWID) experience high rates of serious injection-related bacterial and fungal infections (SIRI), including cellulitis, osteomyelitis, and endocarditis. These infections often require prolonged antibiotic treatment and result in frequent rehospitalizations, with over 50% of patients readmitted within 1 year. Few evidence-based interventions exist to optimize continuity of care for addiction, management, and prevention of SIRI following hospitalization. METHODS: CHOICE-STAR is a hybrid type 1 randomized effectiveness-implementation trial, guided by the Explo
