Studying host specificity is crucial to understanding the ability of parasites to spread to new hosts and trigger disease emergence events. The relationship between host specificity and parasite prevalence and infection intensity, has typically been studied in the context of two opposing hypotheses. According to the trade-off hypothesis generalist parasites, which can infect a broad range of hosts, will reach a lower prevalence and infection intensity than more specialist parasites due to the higher costs to adapt to multiple host immune systems. In contrast, the niche breadth hypothesis propo…

Schistosoma parasites, causing schistosomiasis, exhibit typical host specificity in host preference. Many mammals, including humans, are susceptible to infection, while the widely distributed rodent, Microtus fortis, exhibits natural anti-schistosome characteristics. The mechanisms of host susceptibility remain poorly understood. Comparison of schistosome infection in M. fortis with the infection in laboratory mice (highly sensitive to infection) offers a good model system to investigate these mechanisms and to gain an insight into host specificity. In this study, we showed that large numbers …

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Scabies is a serious disease of both humans and other animals caused by infestation of the skin with the ectoparasitic mite Sarcoptes scabiei. Our current understanding of scabies mite biology and disease processes is far outweighed by the significant, worldwide impact of the disease. This review summarizes the recent data which furthers our knowledge of mite biology, host specificity and parasite host evasion mechanisms.
RECENT FINDINGS: Recent data concords with the previous work demonstrating limited gene flow between different host-associated populations of scabies mite…

The emerging and ongoing outbreak of human monkeypox (hMPX) in 2022 is a serious global threat. An understanding of the evolution of the monkeypox virus (MPXV) at the single-gene level may provide clues for exploring the unique aspects of the current outbreak: rapidly expanding and sustained human-to-human transmission. For the current investigation, alleles of 156 MPXV coding genes (which account for >95% of the genomic sequence) have been gathered from roughly 1,500 isolates, including those responsible for the previous outbreaks. Using a range of molecular evolution approaches, we demonstra

BACKGROUND: Whipworms (Trichuris sp.) are a globally distributed genus of parasitic helminths that infect a diversity of mammalian hosts. Mo … esults suggest that the host range of Trichuris varies by taxonomic group, with some groups showing host specificity, and others showing host generality. In particular, one Trichuris taxon should be considered a multi-host pathogen that is capable of infecting wild primates and humans. This challenges past assumptions about the host specificity of this and similar …

Pneumocystis organisms are airborne-transmitted fungal parasites that infect the lungs of numerous mammalian species with strong host specificity. In this study, we investigated the genetic diversity and host specificity of Pneumocystis organisms infecting Southeast Asian murid rodents through PCR amplification of two mitochondrial genes and tested the co-phylogeny hypothesis among these fungi and their rodent hosts. Pneumocystis DNA was detected in 215 of 445 wild rodents belonging to 18 Southeast Asian murid species. Three of the Pneumocystis lineages retrieved in our phylogenetic trees corr…

More than a century ago, bacteriophages (phages) were discovered as entities that could both replicate and dramatically reduce bacterial culture turbidities. By the late 1940s, phage impact on broth turbidity was being studied using electronic detectors. This review examines such turbidimetric, also known as colorimetric or optical density means of studying phage biology. The focus is especially on relatively rapid and higher throughput phenotypic phage characterization versus methods that rely instead on phage plaques, spots, or genotype determinations. Topics covered include (i) the most pro

Cryptosporidiosis is a common parasitic infection in birds that is caused by more than 25 Cryptosporidium species and genotypes. Many of the genotypes that cause avian cryptosporidiosis are poorly characterized. The genetic and biological characteristics of avian genotype III are described here and these data support the establishment of a new species, Cryptosporidium proventriculi. Faecal samples from the orders Passeriformes and Psittaciformes were screened for the presence of Cryptosporidium by microscopy and sequencing, and infections were detected in 10 of 98 Passeriformes and in 27 of 40

Most parasites are able to infect several host species, yet generalism is anticipated to be a costly strategy. Parasite abundance provides an important indicator of fitness because it is promoted by longevity and fecundity, which are correlated with a parasite's basic reproductive number. Using a global database of parasitic helminths of terrestrial mammals, we show that the abundance of parasitic helminths is phylogenetically structured across helminth species. High parasite abundance can be achieved through three separate components: infecting abundant host species, having a high infection s

Host-associated microbiomes often display host specificity and heritability, yet the evolutionary processes under which such structured communities first emerge are still unclear. In particular, the conditions by which intergenerational (i.e., vertical) transmission of microbes can evolve and generate host-specific microbiomes are still unresolved. Here, we present an eco-evolutionary theory of microbiome assembly under minimal assumptions of microbial dynamics (i.e., neutrally driven by environmental fluctuations) and host control. We consider the adaptive evolution of microbial and host trai…

The ability to recognize and successfully infest an appropriate host during its early life is under strong natural selection in parasitic organisms, as it directly affects the parasite's fitness. Although many cymothoid isopods that parasitize fishes exhibit high host specificity at the species level, it remains unclear whether the manca (i.e., infective early-life stage) can actively recognize and selectively infest an appropriate host species. We conducted controlled aquarium experiments in which mancae were simultaneously presented with their primary host and a non-primary host species to a…

Schistosome parasites commonly show specificity to their intermediate mollusc hosts and the degree of specificity can vary between parasite strains and geographical location. Here the role of miracidial behaviour in host specificity of Schistosoma haematobium on the islands of Zanzibar is investigated. In choice-chamber experiments, S. haematobium miracidia moved towards Bulinus globosus snail hosts in preference to empty chambers. In addition, miracidia preferred uninfected over patent B. globosus. This preference should benefit the parasite as patent snails are likely to have mounted an immu…

The majority of emergent human pathogens are zoonotic in origin, that is, they can transmit to humans from other animals. Understanding the factors underlying the evolution of pathogen host range is therefore of critical importance in protecting human health. There are two main evolutionary routes to generalism: organisms can tolerate multiple environments or they can modify their environments to forms to which they are adapted. Here we use a combination of theory and a phylogenetic comparative analysis of 191 pathogenic bacterial species to show that bacteria use cooperative secretions that m

This paper presents a review of host specificity among cestodes collected from Soricidae mammals in Europe and a revision of cestodes preserved in formalin in the collection of the East-Slovakian Museum in Košice. The morphological re-examination of cestodes showed that cestodes found in non-specific hosts (Soricidae and Talpidae) were identified incorrectly. The majority of the redescribed species are specific to a particular host genus. Only one species of the Staphylocystis Villot, 1877 genus, which could be Staphylocystis brusatae (Vaucher, 1971) according to the number, shape and length o…
