Bites and stings of uncommon arthropods. 1. Spiders.

In addition to the Hymenoptera, less common arthropods, such as spiders and reduviids, can inflict injuries of medical importance. Identification of the source of the bite or sting may be difficult but is essential to proper treatment. Part 1 of this article describes recognition and treatment of the bites of various spiders; part 2, beginning on page 107, considers bites and stings of other arthropods.

Anaphylaxis after stings by Vespula spp. - preventions, safety profile of venom immunotherapy, data from the Anaphylaxis Registry for West Pomerania Voivodeship, Poland.

Stings by Hymenoptera, especially by Vespula spp. are one of the most common causes of anaphylaxis among adults. The only method of preventing further episodes of anaphylaxis, in people with IgE allergy to Hymenoptera venom, is venom immunotherapy (VIT). Its efficacy, depending on the type of venom it is administered with, is very high at 77-84% for bee venom, and 91-96% for Vespula spp. venom. Retrospective, noninterventional study based on the analysis of medical records of 113 patients was conducted. Results: The analysis shows that complications occur more frequently when the procedure was…

Critical Upper Airway Edema After a Bee Sting to the Uvula.

Hymenoptera stings of the upper airway are rare events, but can result in rapid, life-threatening airway emergencies. The allergenic and toxic mediators that are released from the stings of bees, wasps, and hornets can cause local tissue inflammation and edema with subsequent upper airway obstruction. We report the case of a 15-y-old girl who suffered a bee sting to the uvula while zip-lining in Costa Rica. Shortly thereafter, she developed a choking sensation with associated dysphonia, odynophagia, drooling, and respiratory distress. She was brought to a rural emergency medical clinic where s…

Description of the pupal case of Anthrax midas Fabricius (Diptera: Bombyliidae: Anthracinae: Anthraciini), with the first host record for the species.

The pupal case of Anthrax midas Fabricius, 1805 is described and illustrated for the first time. The examined material was reared from nests of Montezumia cortesia de Saussure, 1852 (Hymenoptera: Vespidae: Eumeninae: Odynerini), collected on a rural property in the municipality of Iranduba, within the Manaus Metropolitan Region, in the state of Amazonas, Brazil. This study also provides the first host record for A. midas.

Risk factors and management of severe life-threatening anaphylaxis in patients with clonal mast cell disorders.

Several different risk factors and conditions may predispose to severe life-threatening anaphylaxis. Systemic mastocytosis (SM) is one such … ween severe anaphylaxis in SM and the type of allergen. Notably, many of these patients suffer from hymenoptera venom allergy. Currently recommended therapies include the prophylactic use of anti-mediator-type drugs, long-term immunotherapy for hymenoptera venom allergic patients, and epinephrine-self-injector treatment for emergency situations. Insect-venom allergy in Greek adults.

Relatively few studies have investigated the prevalence of insect-sting allergy and the results of diagnostic procedures in unselected populations. The prevalence of insect-sting reactions and of venom sensitization in Greece is unknown. We report the results from a stratified random sample of 480 subjects (404 men, 76 women), aged 20-60 years. They all belonged to the ground personnel of the Hellenic Air Force. A detailed history particularly focused on the reactions to Hymenoptera stings was taken in all subjects. Intradermal skin tests (concentration: 1 microgram/ml) with three venoms (hone…

Unraveling wasp sensitization in a patient with systemic mastocytosis by CAP-inhibition assay.

Systemic mastocytosis (SM) is a clonal mast cell disorder that can lead to potentially severe anaphylactic reactions. Hymenoptera sting is one of the most frequent triggers of anaphylaxis in these patients, and diagnosis of indolent SM (ISM) without skin involvement (ISMs) is not rare. In this subgroup of patients, venom immunotherapy (VIT) is an effective treatment decreasing subsequent systemic reactions, and lifelong administration is recommended. An individualized diagnosis is necessary to offer the most adequate VIT, and molecular diagnosis (MD) may be useful to discriminate between prima…

Allergy to stings and bites from rare or locally important arthropods: Worldwide distribution, available diagnostics and treatment.

Insect venom allergy is the most frequent cause of anaphylaxis in Europe and possibly worldwide. The majority of systemic allergic reactions after insect stings are caused by Hymenoptera, and among these, vespid genera induce most of the systemic sting reactions (SSR). Honey bees are the second leading cause of SSR. Depending on the global region, other Hymenoptera such as different ant genera are responsible for SSR. Widely distributed hornets and bumblebees or local vespid or bee genera rarely induce SSR. Hematophagous insects such as mosquitoes and horse flies usually cause (large) local re…

Risk factors and indicators of severe systemic insect sting reactions.

Hymenoptera venom allergy ranks among the top three causes of anaphylaxis worldwide, and approximately one-quarter of sting-induced reactions are classified as severe. Fatal sting reactions are exceedingly rare, but certain factors may entail a considerably higher risk. Delayed administration of epinephrine and upright posture are situational risk factors which may determine an unfavorable outcome of the acute anaphylactic episode and should be addressed during individual patient education. Systemic mastocytosis and senior age are major, unmodifiable long-term risk factors and thus reinforce t…

Proteome and allergenome of Asian wasp, Vespa affinis, venom and IgE reactivity of the venom components.

Vespa affinis (Asian wasp, Thai banded tiger wasp, or local name: Tor Hua Seua) causes the most frequent incidence of medically important Hymenoptera sting in South and Southeast Asia. However, data on the venom components attributable to the sting derived-clinical manifestations (local reactions, IgE mediated-anaphylaxis, or systemic envenomation) are lacking. This study provides the first set information on V. affinis venom proteome, allergenome, and IgE reactivity of individual venom components. From 2DE-gel based-proteomics, the venom revealed 93 protein spots, of which proteins in 51 spot…

Non-Target Arthropod Community Variation Associated with Abamectin Trunk-Injection History in a Pinus massoniana Plantation.

Abamectin trunk injection is used to control pine wilt disease, but field evidence linking injection history to non-target arthropod communities is limited. We compared uninjected plots with plots injected once in March 2024 (ATI1) or March 2022 (ATI3) in a Pinus massoniana plantation in the Qinling-Daba Mountains. Three plots per history were sampled in July, September, and November 2025. Morphological identification and cytochrome c oxidase subunit I metabarcoding characterized soil-associated arthropods and aboveground Hymenoptera; feeding guilds were assigned at the family level. Improving the Efficiency and Safety of Sentinel Stink Bug Eggs Using X-rays.

Sentinel eggs used to monitor field parasitism of stink bug pests (Hemiptera: Pentatomidae) can only be deployed for a few days to avoid releasing the pest in the monitored area. Using sterile eggs removes the risk of accidental pest introduction and extends deployment time. Freezing the eggs before deployment is one common method of sterilizing sentinel eggs. However, some egg parasitoid species have low or no parasitism on frozen eggs. In this study, X-ray irradiation was used to sterilize Bagrada hilaris sentinel eggs intended for monitoring parasitism by Gryon aetherium (Hymenoptera: Sceli…

Characterisation and localisation of plant metabolites involved in pharmacophagy in the turnip sawfly.

Several herbivorous insects consume certain metabolites from plants for other purposes than nutrition, such as defence. Adults of the turnip sawfly, Athalia rosae take up specific terpenoids, called clerodanoids, from Ajuga reptans. These metabolites are slightly modified by the sawflies and influence their mating behaviour and defence against predators. We characterised these metabolites and investigated their localisation in the insect and the specificity of the uptake and metabolite modification. Therefore, we performed feeding assays with adults and larvae of A. rosae as well as larvae of
