Psychotic grandiosity.

ALTHOUGH PSYCHOTIC GRANDIOSITY, like delusions of persecution, constitutes a major symptom in paranoid psychoses, it has not aroused investigative attention. Surprisingly little has been added to our understanding of psychotic grandiosity in the past 50 years, and our knowledge of it has not advanced appreciably beyond the early descriptions provided by Bleuler, Kraepelin, Freud, and others. It is indicative of this lack of interest that Psychological Abstracts does not have a heading for grandiosity, and that no articles under the heading megalomania have appeared in the past five years. The

Psychosocial Factors in Patients Indicated for Lumbar Spinal Stenosis Surgery.

In the context of the interdisciplinary care of patients with chronic back pain, surgery is an option for those who do not benefit from conservative treatment. Psychological assessment prior to back surgery aims to identify suitable candidates for surgery and predict possible complications or poor treatment effects. The literature suggests that psychosocial factors are important outcome predictors of lumbar spinal surgery; however, there is not enough empirical evidence to show that early identification and treatment of these factors help improve surgical outcome. This review discusses the pos

[Experience of a support group for women carrying BRCA1/2 mutations].

Mutations in the BRCA1/2 genes increase the risk of breast and ovarian cancer, leading to complex medical decisions (surveillance, risk-reducing surgery) and major psychological consequences. A support group for BRCA1/2 mutation carriers has been conducted at the CHUV since 2016 by a psychologist-psychotherapist, a genetic counselor, and a geneticist. This article presents the context and then develops some of the psychological issues raised by the participants, focusing in particular on the notions of risk, uncertainty, and guilt. The processes at work in the group, between identification and

Adherence as a mediator of olfactory improvement in digitally-guided versus text-based olfactory training.

OBJECTIVES: To compare the efficacy of WeChat-guided olfactory training (WG-OT) versus text-based olfactory training (TB-OT) in improving odor identification and enhancing adherence in patients with persistent olfactory dysfunction (OD), and to evaluate the mediating role of adherence and psychological outcomes. METHODS: A prospective cohort study was conducted from March 2024 to June 2025. A total of 113 adults with moderate-to-severe OD were randomized to WG-OT (n = 50) or TB-OT (n = 63). Both groups performed twice-daily exposure to four odorants for 12 weeks. Primary outcomes were changes

Psychological aspects of plastic surgery: Impact on self-esteem, body image, and quality of life of patients.

Plastic surgery, encompassing both reconstructive and aesthetic procedures, is a field of medicine that not only enhances patients' external appearance but also significantly impacts their psychological well-being. The aim of this study is to evaluate the psychological consequences of plastic surgery, considering the effects of such interventions on self-esteem, self-worth, quality of life, and the potential risks associated with aesthetic procedures. Research indicates that procedures such as breast augmentation or rhinoplasty can lead to significant improvements in body image perception, inc

[The psychological burden of asthma].

The experience of living with asthma varies between patients. In some cases, the psychological experience can take a central place and determine the course of asthma. Asthmatic disease can be complicated by adaption disorders that hamper the treatment, or genuine anxiety and depressive disorders that require the intervention of mental health specialists. Even more, the psychological experience can influence the intensity and frequency of the physical symptoms themselves, for example when asthma is associated with a hyperventilation syndrome worsening the functional impact and complicating the

Alcohol use and health behavior lifestyles among U.S. women: the behavioral risk factor surveys.

Alcohol use is a complex behavior, occurring in the context of an overall health lifestyle. We used data from a nationally representative telephone survey (N = 12,467 women) to examine associations between binge drinking, chronic drinking, and other health behaviors. Certain health-risk behaviors (e.g., smoking, drunk driving, and seatbelt nonuse) tend to cluster with alcohol misuse. These may act synergistically, thus augmenting the negative health effects of alcohol misuse. Conversely, some health behaviors (e.g., eating or exercising, particularly in response to stress) are negatively assoc

How Can We Make Progress in the Management of Bladder Pain Syndrome? ICI-RS 2025.

AIMS: Management algorithms for Bladder Pain Syndrome (BPS) have remained stagnant over the past 20 years. Lack of high level evidence has hindered progress. Contributors to this have been the use of confusing and inconsistent terminology and failure to adequately phenotype participants entering clinical trials. At the International Consultation on Incontinence Research Society (ICI-RS) meeting in 2025 a Think Tank addressed the question of "How can we make progress in the management of Bladder Pain Syndrome," focussing on the non-Hunner lesion group. METHODS: The Think Tank conducted a liter

Returning home and re-negotiating mental health: a qualitative study of help-seeking, stigma, and cultural identity among Algerian international student returnees.

PURPOSE: International students navigate major academic, social, and cultural transitions while studying abroad. However, less is known about their mental health after returning home. This qualitative study explored how Algerian international student returnees understood and navigated mental health, stigma, help-seeking, and coping after returning from the United Kingdom. METHODS: Semi-structured interviews with Algerian returnees were analysed using reflexive thematic analysis within an interpretivist framework. RESULTS: Reintegration was an emotionally complex transition shaped by cultural

Measuring associations among British national identification, group norms and social distancing behaviour during the COVID-19 pandemic: Testing a Social Identity Model of Behavioural Associations (SIMBA).

Social identification and group norms have been identified as key social psychological determinants of engagement in protective public health behaviours, such as social distancing, in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic. Drawing upon both social identity and balanced identity theories, the research tests the utility of a Social Identity Model of Behavioural Associations (SIMBA)-which proposes reciprocal, interactive associations among self-group, group-behaviour and self-behaviour concepts-for the measurement of British national identification, group norms and social distancing behaviour at t

Mpox in the news: social representations, identity, stigma and coping.

In May 2022, when the COVID-19 pandemic began to recede from public view, another infectious disease surprised the world-mpox (formerly monkeypox). It appeared to disproportionately affect gay, bisexual and other men who have sex with men (GBMSM). Using qualitative thematic analysis and social representations theory, we analysed a corpus of 91 items from a variety of news outlets that included GBMSM community members' personal accounts of living through an mpox outbreak. The aim was to study the various ways in which members of a marginalised group created social representations of mpox and to

Cultural stress, personal identity development, and mental health among U.S. Hispanic college students.

The present study examines the extent to which culturally stressful experiences may predict impaired well-being, increased internalizing symptoms (depression and anxiety), and increased externalizing problems (social aggression, physical aggression, and rule breaking) among a sample of Hispanic college students in Miami across a 12-day period. The predictive effects of cultural stressors on these outcomes were examined both (a) directly and (b) indirectly through daily fluctuations in students' personal identity synthesis and confusion. Results indicated direct predictive effects of cultural s

Karl Abraham's revolution of 1916: from sensual sucking to the oral-aggressive wish of destruction.

The author argues that "The First Pregenital Stage of the Libido" (Abraham 1916-1917) expounds a new conception of orality, i.e., of purposeful oral aggression directed against an object during the first stage of psychic development. This conception is shown to be contrary to Freud's view of orality as elaborated in Three Essays on the Theory of Sexuality (1905), as well as in other writings of late 1914 and 1915. Abraham's conception ignores fundamental dimensions of Freud's thinking during these years, namely, the difference between autoerotism/narcissism and object love, on the one hand, an

'All in the same boat'? Patient and carer attitudes to peer support and social comparison in Motor Neurone Disease (MND).

This paper explores attitudes to peer support among people with Motor Neurone Disease (MND) and their family carers. It reports findings from a secondary analysis of data from two UK interview studies conducted by the authors. The process of secondary analysis is reported in detail. 48 people with MND and 22 carers were interviewed in 2005-2007. The authors identified narrative extracts on peer support from their own datasets and exchanged them for independent thematic analysis. Subsequent discussion, drawing on literature on support groups and social comparison, led to an exploration of two o

The endocrinology of exclusion: rejection elicits motivationally tuned changes in progesterone.

Social exclusion can have profound effects on a vast array of motivated psychological processes, from social withdrawal and aggression to prosocial behavior and social affiliation. The current studies examined motivationally tuned endocrinological consequences of exclusion by measuring the release of progesterone, a hormone that reflects an individual's level of social-affiliative motivation. Results from two experiments indicate that release of progesterone following social exclusion depends on people's levels of social anxiety and rejection sensitivity. Individuals high in social anxiety dis

Toward an integrative CAPS approach to racial/ethnic relations.

The original CAPS formulation focused on the role of the individual's CAPS system in relation to situations, formalizing a person-situation framework. Subsequent research and theorizing on the culturally embedded CAPS system (C-CAPS) began to spell out how culture, context, and group-level processes intersect with both persons and situations. The contributions in this special section provide insights into the enormous complexity and the multiple layers through which context and persons "make each other up" in racial/ethnic relations. The challenge for personality psychologists is to examine an
