Does repetition increase perceived truth equally for conspiracy and trivia statements? A registered replication report.

Repetition increases the perceived truth of information. This illusory truth effect is a well-documented and robust phenomenon. Although research has primarily focused on trivia statements, the effects of repetition on belief have also been identified for consequential statements such as fake news headlines. Moreover, research reveals repetition increases accuracy ratings for conspiracy statements. However, in past work, the illusory truth effect was smaller for conspiracy statements than trivia statements. This result raises the intriguing possibility that there is something unique about cons

The Influence of Prior Knowledge on Perception and Action: Relationships to Autistic Traits.

Autism is characterised by a range of perceptual and sensorimotor deficits, which might be related to abnormalities in how autistic individuals use prior knowledge. We investigated this proposition in a large non-clinical population in the context of the size-weight illusion, where individual's expectations about object weight influence their perceptions of heaviness and fingertip forces. Although there was no relationship between autistic traits and the magnitude of the illusion, we observed an inverse relationship between AQ scores and how expectations influenced initial fingertip force appl

Ownership of an artificial limb induced by electrical brain stimulation.

Replacing the function of a missing or paralyzed limb with a prosthetic device that acts and feels like one's own limb is a major goal in ap … ical brain stimulation can be used to "bypass" the peripheral nervous system to induce multisensory illusions and ownership of artificial body parts, which has important implications for patients who lack peripheral sensory input due to spinal cord or nerve lesions.

Pareidolia in Parkinson's disease without dementia: A positron emission tomography study.

BACKGROUND: Pareidolia, which is a particular type of complex visual illusion, has been reported to be a phenomenon analogous to visual hall … in the PD patients. RESULTS: PD patients without dementia produced a greater number of pareidolic illusions compared with the controls. Pareidolia was observed in all of the patients having visual hallucinations as well as a subset of those without visual hallucinations. The number of pareidolic illusions was correlated with hypometabolism in the bilatera …

Evidence against an ecological explanation of the jitter advantage for vection.

Visual-vestibular conflicts have been traditionally used to explain both perceptions of self-motion and experiences of motion sickness. However, sensory conflict theories have been challenged by findings that adding simulated viewpoint jitter to inducing displays enhances (rather than reduces or destroys) visual illusions of self-motion experienced by stationary observers. One possible explanation of this jitter advantage for vection is that jittering optic flows are more ecological than smooth displays. Despite the intuitive appeal of this idea, it has proven difficult to test. Here we compar…

Hallucinations in Parkinson disease.

Patients with Parkinson disease (PD) can experience hallucinations (spontaneous aberrant perceptions) and illusions (misinterpretations of real perceptual stimuli). Of such phenomena, visual hallucinations (VHs) and illusions are the most frequently encountered, although auditory, olfactory and tactile hallucinations can also occur. In cross-sectional studies, VHs occur in approximately one-third of patients, but up to three-quarters of patients might develop VHs during a 20-year period. Hallucinations can have substantial psychosocial effects and, historically, were the main reason for placin…

Illusory deformation of the finger is more extensive in the distal than the lateral direction.

Previous studies have examined the rubber hand illusion with finger lengthening, but there is limited research on finger widening. This suggests a strong cognitive bias toward the illusory expansion of the finger in a distal direction rather than lateral. To test this, we compared the illusory deformability of the finger in the distal and lateral directions through the generation of illusory finger deformation using a double-touch operation, referred to as the numbness illusion. Our results showed that perceived distal distortion was wholly superior to perceived lateral distortion in terms of

Multisensory Integration in Migraine: Recent Developments.

There are well-documented unimodal sensory differences in migraine compared to control groups both during, and between migraine attacks. The … ights into relative excitability of different areas of the cortex, and also into mechanisms for the illusions themselves. This review updates the most recent literature and also highlights potentially fruitful areas of research to understand one of the most common neurological disorders.

The cyclopean eye and its implications: vergence state and visual direction.

The cyclopean illusion (Hering, 1861) is an anomalous lateral shift in the apparent direction to a monocularly seen target, which arises when a change in vergence is made by the opposite (nonobserving) eye. Surprisingly, this directional illusion does not arise, when the observed target is an afterimage or an intermittently illuminated (4-8 Hz) object. Instead, during convergence, a monocularly imprinted afterimage seems to move toward the observer, and a stroboscopically illuminated target seems to remain fully stationary. The apparent displacement of an afterimage in depth is particularly pu

Right hemispheric dominance of visual phenomena evoked by intracerebral stimulation of the human visual cortex.

Electrical brain stimulation can provide important information about the functional organization of the human visual cortex. Here, we report the visual phenomena evoked by a large number (562) of intracerebral electrical stimulations performed at low-intensity with depth electrodes implanted in the occipito-parieto-temporal cortex of 22 epileptic patients. Focal electrical stimulation evoked primarily visual hallucinations with various complexities: simple (spot or blob), intermediary (geometric forms), or complex meaningful shapes (faces); visual illusions and impairments of visual recognitio…

Sensations of skin infestation linked to abnormal frontolimbic brain reactivity and differences in self-representation.

Some patients experience skin sensations of infestation and contamination that are elusive to proximate dermatological explanation. We undertook a functional magnetic resonance imaging study of the brain to demonstrate, for the first time, that central processing of infestation-relevant stimuli is altered in patients with such abnormal skin sensations. We show differences in neural activity within amygdala, insula, middle temporal lobe and frontal cortices. Patients also demonstrated altered measures of self-representation, with poorer sensitivity to internal bodily (interoceptive) signals and

The role of the right superior parietal lobule in processing visual context for the establishment of the egocentric reference frame.

Visual cues contribute to the creation of an observer's egocentric reference frame, within which the locations and orientations of objects can be judged. However, these cues can also be misleading. In the rod-and-frame illusion, for example, a large tilted frame distorts the observer's sense of vertical, causing an enclosed rod to appear tilted in the opposite direction. To determine the brain region responsible for processing these spatial cues, we used TMS to suppress neural activity in the superior parietal lobule of healthy observers. Stimulation of the right hemisphere, but not the left,

Motorist's vestibular disorientation syndrome.

Six patients are described who experienced difficulty in driving a motor car. Four had illusions that the car was turning, which occurred particularly on open, featureless roads or the brows of hills and caused the driver to stop. All patients had peripheral or central neurootological abnormalities, but the only finding consistent with the directionality of the symptoms was an unpleasantly increased sense of circularvection during optokinetic stimulation in the direction of the illusion. These problems occur because of a false sense of orientation arising either from inappropriate signals from…

Spatial orientation in weightlessness and readaptation to earth's gravity.

Unusual vestibular responses to head movements in weightlessness may produce spatial orientation illusions and symptoms of space motion sickness. An integrated set of experiments was performed during Spacelab 1, as well as before and after the flight, to evaluate responses mediated by the otolith organs and semicircular canals. A variety of measurements were used, including eye movements, postural control, perception of orientation, and susceptibility to space sickness.

Testing a learning-based account of interoceptive hunger using an illusory induction.

Physiological changes cause many interoceptive cues (e.g., a rumbling stomach), and so it is often assumed they also cause their motivational consequences (e.g., hunger). However, there is grounds to suspect that the meaning of interoceptive cues are learned and it is their meaning that causes their motivational consequences. We tested this possibility by psychologically inducing an illusory interoceptive hunger cue to see if it stimulated hunger and food intake. Participants (n = 130) received either a stomach rumbling or control sound (electrical arcing/buzzing), while judging liking for non

Monovision and the Misperception of Motion.

Monovision is a common prescription lens correction for presbyopia [1]. Each eye is corrected for a different distance, causing one image to be blurrier than the other. Millions of people have monovision corrections, but little is known about how interocular blur differences affect motion perception. Here, we report that blur differences cause a previously unknown motion illusion that makes people dramatically misperceive the distance and three-dimensional direction of moving objects. The effect occurs because the blurry and sharp images are processed at different speeds. For moving objects, t
