A Meta-Analysis of the Effect of Bacillus Calmette-Guérin Vaccination Against Bovine Tuberculosis: Is Perfect the Enemy of Good?

More than 50 million cattle are likely exposed to bovine tuberculosis (bTB) worldwide, highlighting an urgent need for bTB control strategies in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) and other regions where the disease remains endemic and test-and-slaughter approaches are unfeasible. While Bacillus Calmette-Guérin (BCG) was first developed as a vaccine for use in cattle even before its widespread use in humans, its efficacy against bTB remains poorly understood. To address this important knowledge gap, we conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis to determine the direct efficacy of BC

A novel and cost-effective real-time RT-PCR targeting 24 nucleotides deletion to differentiate PEDV wild-type and classical attenuated vaccine strains.

Porcine Epidemic Diarrhea Virus (PEDV) poses a significant threat to the swine industry, causing severe disease and resulting in substantial economic losses. Despite China's implementation of a large-scale vaccine immunization strategy in recent years, various strains of PEDV, including classical attenuated vaccine strains, continue to emerge in immunized pig herds. Here, we established a one-step real-time fluorescent reverse transcription PCR (one-step real-time RT-PCR) assay targeting a 24-nucleotide deletion in the ORF1 region of three PEDV classical attenuated vaccine strains, derived fro

This longitudinal study examined variations in post-vaccination antibody response to Foot-and-Mouth Disease (FMD) vaccination in bovines across different age groups and agro-climatic zones in Karnataka, India. A total of 374 serum samples were collected from 28 villages across nine agroclimatic zones, targeting pre- and post-vaccination titers for FMD virus serotypes O, A, and Asia-1. Analysis via single-dilution liquid-phase blocking ELISA revealed significant findings: pre-vaccination immune proportions were below the herd immunity threshold (< 80%) for serotypes O and Asia-1 but exceeded it

Micronutrient and protein-energy supplementation enhance vaccine responses in undernourished children: Evidence from a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Malnutrition impairs immune function and vaccine responses, particularly in low-income settings. This can lead to reduced seroconversion rates and compromised herd immunity in children. Nutritional interventions have been proposed to enhance vaccine immunogenicity, yet evidence remains scattered and context specific. OBJECTIVE: This systematic review assesses the impact of nutritional interventions-especially vitamin A, zinc supplementation, and protein-energy rehabilitation-on serological responses to routine childhood vaccines among malnourished children in low- and middle-incom

The relationship between mucosal immunity, nasopharyngeal carriage, asymptomatic transmission and the resurgence of Bordetella pertussis.

The incidence of whooping cough in the US has been rising slowly since the 1970s, but the pace of this has accelerated sharply since acellular pertussis vaccines replaced the earlier whole cell vaccines in the late 1990s. A similar trend occurred in many other countries, including the UK, Canada, Australia, Ireland, and Spain, following the switch to acellular vaccines. The key question is why. Two leading theories (short duration of protective immunologic persistence and evolutionary shifts in the pathogen to evade the vaccine) explain some but not all of these shifts, suggesting that other f

[Poliomyelitis in The Netherlands, 1979-1991: immunity and exposure].

An overview is presented of serological and virological studies on poliovirus immunization and circulation in the Netherlands, performed between 1979 and 1991. In this period, only three patients with poliomyelitis were notified. All had acquired the infection abroad. The vaccinations in the national immunization programme, using inactivated poliovirus vaccine, build a strong immunity. This can also be seen in age-stratified serological profiles of the Dutch population. In these surveys, persons from the time at which vaccination was offered have neutralizing antibodies. Older persons, especia

Persistence of Nasopharyngeal Pneumococcal Vaccine Serotypes and Increase of Nonvaccine Serotypes Among Vaccinated Infants and Their Mothers 5 Years After Introduction of Pneumococcal Conjugate Vaccine 13 in The Gambia.

BACKGROUND: The widespread use of pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV) has brought about a dramatic decrease in pneumococci of vaccine serotypes (VTs) but nonvaccine serotypes (NVTs) have emerged. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional survey (CSS) among infants who received 3 doses of 13-valent PCV (PCV13) and their mothers 5 years (CSS3) after PCV13 introduction. Nasopharyngeal swab samples were collected and cultured for isolation of Streptococcus pneumoniae. Whole-genome sequencing of the nontypeable strains was performed. Data were compared with those from 2 previous surveys conducted b

Human papillomavirus in young women with Chlamydia trachomatis infection 7 years after the Australian human papillomavirus vaccination programme: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: The national quadrivalent human papillomavirus (4vHPV) vaccination programme was launched in Australia in April, 2007. In this study, we aimed to explore the prevalence of vaccine-targeted human papillomavirus (HPV) types contained in the 4vHPV and nine-valent HPV (9vHPV) vaccines detected in young women diagnosed with chlamydia. METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, we identified specimens from women aged 25 years or younger who attended the Melbourne Sexual Health Centre (Melbourne, VIC, Australia) diagnosed with chlamydia. We calculated the prevalence of 4vHPV types (6, 11, 1

Modeling polio as a disease of development.

Poliomyelitis is a disease which began to appear in epidemic proportions in the late 19th century, paradoxically, just at the time when living conditions and developments in health were transforming enormously for the better. We present a simple age-class model that explains this "disease of development" as a threshold phenomenon. Epidemics arise when improved conditions in hygiene are able to reduce disease transmission of polio amongst children below a critical threshold level. This generates a large susceptible adult population in which, under appropriate conditions, epidemics can propagate

A polyvalent influenza DNA vaccine applied by needle-free intradermal delivery induces cross-reactive humoral and cellular immune responses in pigs.

BACKGROUND: Pigs are natural hosts for influenza A viruses, and the infection is widely prevalent in swine herds throughout the world. Current commercial influenza vaccines for pigs induce a narrow immune response and are not very effective against antigenically diverse viruses. To control influenza in pigs, the development of more effective swine influenza vaccines inducing broader cross-protective immune responses is needed. Previously, we have shown that a polyvalent influenza DNA vaccine using vectors containing antibiotic resistance genes induced a broadly protective immune response in pi

The effects of in utero viral infection on embryonic, fetal, and neonatal survival: a comparison of SMEDI (porcine picorna) viruses with hog cholera vaccinal virus.

SMEDI and hog cholera viruses were shown to have marked effects upon the survival of the embryo (from conception to 30 days of gestation), the fetus (from 30 days of gestation until birth), and the neonatal pig (from birth until five days after birth). Embryonic infection was characterized by death and absorption of the embryo and in some instances the return to estrus after an irregular estrous cycle. Embryonic infection also may have been responsible for the development of some abnormal pigs. Fetal infection caused death with mummification of one or more fetuses and occasionally all fetuses

Seroconversion dynamic and SARS-CoV-2 seropositivity in unvaccinated population during the first and second outbreaks in Mexico.

Serosurveillance helps establish reopening guidelines and determine the immunity levels in different populations to reach herd immunity. Then, there is an urgent need to estimate seroprevalence population wide. In Mexico, information about COVID-19 cases and related deaths is scarce. Also, there is no official serosurveillance, limiting our knowledge of the impact of the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic. Here, we report the prevalence of anti-SARS-CoV-2 antibodies in 522,690 unvaccinated people from July 5th to December 31st, 2020. The overall seroprevalence was 32.8% and highest in adults aged 30-39 years

Vaccination of cattle against bovine viral diarrhea virus.

Bovine viral diarrhea virus (BVDV) is responsible for significant losses to the cattle industry. Currently, modified-live viral (MLV) and inactivated viral vaccines are available against BVDV, often in combination with other viral and bacterial antigens. Inactivated and MLV vaccines provide cattle producers and veterinarians safe and efficacious options for herd immunization to limit disease associated with BVDV infection. Vaccination of young cattle against BVDV is motivated by prevention of clinical disease and limiting viral spread to susceptible animals. For reproductive-age cattle, vaccin

The basic reproduction number (R0) of ebola virus disease: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Ebola virus disease (Ebola) is highly pathogenic, transmissible, and often deadly, with debilitating consequences. Superspreading within a cluster is also possible. In this study, we aim to document Ebola basic reproduction number (R0): the average number of new cases associated with an Ebola case in a completely susceptible population. METHODS: We undertook a systematic review and meta-analysis. We searched PubMed, EMBASE, and Web of Science for studies published between 1976 and February 27, 2023. We also manually searched the reference lists of the reviewed studies to identify

Vaccinomics - The future of personalized vaccination?

Vaccination is one of the most effective methods for the prevention of infectious diseases. Selected types of vaccines are administered to the majority of the population, thereby supporting herd immunity against certain transmissible diseases. Importantly, the immune response to vaccines - regarding its intensity, complexity, and duration - varies among individuals. These differences are partly influenced by genetic factors, specifically the presence of selected genetic polymorphisms that may affect not only the effectiveness of the immune response but also the risk of adverse reactions. Vacci

Measles in Indonesia: Vaccination Coverage and Identified Challenges.

Measles has re-emerged as a significant public health threat in Indonesia, signaling gaps in immunization coverage and systemic health inequities. Following the disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, the country has seen a troubling resurgence in cases. This editorial examines the current epidemiological situation, structural barriers to vaccination, and necessary strategies for elimination. In 2025, Indonesia recorded over 63,000 suspected cases, with the trend continuing into 2026. Current vaccination coverage for children aged 12-23 months stands at 73.46%, which is significantly belo

Addressing the crises of declining vaccination rates and measles resurgence by promoting health literacy.

Pediatric vaccination rates are declining in the United States, with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reporting decreases in immunization coverage against measles-mumps-rubella (MMR), diphtheria-tetanus-acellular pertussis (DTaP), polio, and varicella. The recent measles outbreaks have resulted in tragic outcomes, highlighting the urgent need for clinician concern and proactive measures to prevent illness, hospitalizations, missed school and caregiver workdays, and deaths. According to the World Health Organization, MMR vaccination rates below 95% compromise herd immunity,

Pertussis in Infancy: A Case of Delayed Diagnosis.

Bordetella pertussis is a gram-negative bacterium that primarily infects the respiratory tract. We report the case of a 13-month-old male patient who developed pertussis. At the initial clinic presentation, the diagnosis was not immediately considered, as the early manifestations closely mimicked those of a viral upper respiratory infection. As the illness progressed, the classic paroxysmal cough with inspiratory "whoop" became apparent, prompting the correct diagnosis. At that time, a nasopharyngeal swab was obtained, which tested positive for Bordetella pertussis by polymerase chain reaction

Mathematical analysis of scrub typhus seasonal infection with re-scaled transmission rate considering Northeast India reported data from 2010 to 2022.

Healthcare reporting methods have seen a common problem with actual incidence of scrub typhus cases in Northeast India that were reported during post rainy season. We propose a Host-Vector model, a first of its kind, with a significant modification in the disease infection transmission rate. Our work aims to investigate a mathematical model by Atangana-Baleanu fractal-fractional operator that has seasonal pattern incorporating 2010-2022 data. The existence-uniqueness property is investigated using the fixed point theory, and also Ulam-Hyers stability is performed. Based on Lagrange's interpola
