Approximately 100 million newborn children receive Bacille Calmette-Guérin (BCG) annually, because vaccination is consistently protective against childhood tuberculous meningitis and miliary TB. By contrast, BCG efficacy against pulmonary TB in children and adults is highly variable, ranging from 0% to 80%, though it tends to be higher in individuals who have no detectable prior exposure to mycobacterial infections, as judged by the absence of delayed-type hypersensitivity response (a negative tuberculin skin test, TST). The duration of protection against pulmonary TB is also variable, but las

This article presents the WHO recommendations on the use of vaccines against tick-borne encephalitis excerpted from the recently published Vaccines against tick-borne encephalitis: WHO position paper. This is the first WHO position paper on the use of tick-borne encephalitis. It was published in the Weekly Epidemiological Record in June 2011. In this paper, footnotes provide a limited number of core references including references to grading tables that assess the quality of scientific evidence for a few key conclusions; a more comprehensive list of references is offered in the Background docu

The fifth annual Asian Rabies Expert Bureau (AREB) meeting, held in Vietnam, addressed how to increase rabies awareness and to improve rabies prevention and control. Active participation of Ministries of Health and Education was identified as crucial for the success of rabies programs, and World Rabies Day was considered as one of the best opportunities to increase rabies awareness. AREB strongly recommend implementation of pre-exposure prophylaxis for children living in rabies endemic areas. A review of national and international guidelines concerning rabies prophylaxis and their application

All three existing species of human trichomonads cause similar immune and histopathological host responses. The elicited crossimmunity causes interspecific competition of trichomonal infections in their typical localizations, which results in very rare simultaneous colonization of the same host by different species. This phenomenon points to the existence of a unique immune disorder or subclinical sensitization, regardless of which trichomonas species is in question. The total percentage of infestations in all three species points to the most widespread parasitosis, i.e. the immunodepression o

Polyclonal antibodies are frequently used as immunodiagnostic tools in fundamental research. They are also used for routine diagnostic purposes in human and veterinary medicine and for quality control procedures in the food-processing industry. The antibody is a major component of the detection system. It binds with the molecule to be identified. This conjugate is subsequently revealed by means of binding the antibody with a radio-isotope, a fluorescent substance, an enzyme inducing a color change, or a biosensor based analytical system. Polyclonal antibodies are also used for treatment purpos

Visna virus-sensitized lymphocytes were demonstrated in the peripheral blood of rabbits following immunization with purified, concentrated visna virus. Lymphocytes sensitization was maximal at about 2 weeks and fell to control levels in 5 weeks. A delayed-type cutaneous hypersensitivity to the virus was observed at 2 weeks and lasted for at last 9 weeks. Both reactions increased after a booster injection. Although sera from immunized rabbits had precipitating antibodies against visna virus protein P25, their lymphocytes were not stimulated by P25. However, there was a slight reaction to P25 in

Despite the decline of the global peak of COVID-19, SARS-CoV-2 continues to circulate, evolve, and undergo immune escape, posing persistent threats, particularly to older adults, individuals with comorbidities, and immunocompromised populations. Although existing vaccination strategies have substantially reduced the risks of severe disease, hospitalization, and death, their ability to block infection and transmission remains limited, and protection wanes over time. Current heterologous booster strategies still rely largely on combinations of different parenteral vaccine platforms. Although the

Prevention of hepatitis B, one of the most prevalent human diseases, still requires cheap and commonly available vaccines. Oral vaccines, including plant-based formulations, have been considered as alternatives or supplements for standard injection vaccines, due to the assumed low-cost production and simplified vaccination. Although plant production of HBV antigens is sufficiently efficient, despite almost 20 years of research still no anti-HBV plant-based vaccine has been developed. The basic difficulty has been to elaborate an effective immunisation procedure. Immunisation by parenteral prim

The administration of a combined adult-type diphtheria-tetanus vaccine to a group of 35 adults seeking booster tetanus immunization produced a secondary immune response to the diphtheria antigen in 26. A satisfactory response to the tetanus antigen was noted in all those who gave a reliable history of active tetanus immunization, including eight individuals who had not received a dose of toxoid for 25 to 28 years. No systemic reactions were observed, but significant correlation was found between local reactivity and a high post-booster titre of tetanus antitoxin. Selective use of the combined

Intranasal infection with non-lethal influenza A virus (IAV) followed by infection with group A streptococci (GAS) induces invasive, lethal GAS infections, including necrotizing fasciitis, in mice. We demonstrate that subcutaneous immunization of formalin-inactivated IAV vaccine or intranasal immunization of IAV vaccine and cholera toxin protected more than 75% of mice from death by lethal IAV-GAS superinfection. The increased survival rate correlates with increase in IAV neutralizing activity and the levels of serum anti-IAV IgG. Moreover, elimination of IAV from the lungs of vaccinated mice

Although many influenza-related deaths are attributable to secondary bacterial infection with S. pneumoniae, vaccines that simultaneously protect against influenza and pneumococcal infection are currently not developed. The aim of our study was to evaluate the possibility to prevent post-influenza pneumococcal infection using an associated vaccine based on live influenza vaccine (LAIV) combined with recombinant polypeptides derived from superficial factors of Group B streptococcus (GBS) determining pathogenicity. We demonstrated in a model of post-influenza pneumococcal pneumonia that intranas

BACKGROUND: There is a substantial typhoid burden in sub-Saharan Africa, and TCV has been introduced in two African countries to date. Decision-makers in Malawi decided to introduce TCV and applied for financial support from Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance in 2020. The current plan is to introduce TCV as part of the national immunization program in late 2022. The introduction will include a nationwide campaign targeting all children aged 9 months to 15 years. Following the campaign, TCV will be provided through routine immunization at 9 months. This study aims to estimate the cost of TCV introducti

The mucosal immunity plays an important role against African swine fever virus (ASFV) infection and the efficacy of mucosal vaccination is highly dependent on the adjuvant. However, the mucosal adjuvant for ASFV vaccination is poorly studied. Toll-like receptor (TLR) ligands such as the FlaB flagellin from Vibrio vulnificus and the heat shock protein 70 from Mycobacterium tuberculosis (mHsp70) hold a great promise as novel vaccine adjuvant. However, the mucosal adjuvanticities of such TLR ligands have not been studied in pigs. In this study, three recombinant Adenovirus (rAd) vectors, namely rA

The immunogenicity of Bacillus anthracis capsule (poly-γ-D-glutamic acid [PGA]) conjugated to recombinant B. anthracis protective antigen (rPA) or to tetanus toxoid (TT) was evaluated in two anthrax-naive juvenile chimpanzees. In a previous study of these conjugates, highly protective monoclonal antibodies (MAbs) against PGA were generated. This study examines the polyclonal antibody response of the same animals. Preimmune antibodies to PGA with titers of >10(3) were detected in the chimpanzees. The maximal titer of anti-PGA was induced within 1 to 2 weeks following the 1st immunization, with

An important consideration in evaluating vaccines is the duration of immunity. The only really important measure of this immunity is the protection against infections and/or illness at various time intervals, following natural or artificial challenge. There are few data of this sort, more commonly immunity is estimated by measuring serum antibody, in many instances an erroneous measure. Serum antibody levels to respiratory viruses fall only slightly 6 months following infection or immunization. It is difficult to assess the duration of antibody for much longer than this, because of problems wi

OBJECTIVE: In this study, we sought to understand patterns of childhood vaccinations in the United States across socioeconomic and racial/ethnic groups over a 12-year period to identify interventions that improve immunization equity and inform public health practice.
DESIGN: We conducted an explanatory, sequential, mixed-methods study. US state- and county-level immunization data were analyzed to understand trends in immunization coverage among racial/ethnic groups. Qualitative interviews with public health and community leaders were used to explain trends, gain insight into routine childhood

Primary immunization of infants with protein-polysaccharide conjugate vaccines induces antipolysaccharide antibody and is highly effective in preventing invasive disease caused by encapsulated bacteria. However, recent experience from the UK indicates that this immunity is not sustained in the absence of booster doses of vaccine. This study aimed to establish the kinetics and phenotype of B-cell subpopulations responding to booster immunization with a heptavalent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (Pnc7), which is to be introduced into the primary immunization schedule in the UK during 2006.
