Handoffs and transitions in critical care-understanding scalability: study protocol for a multicenter stepped wedge type 2 hybrid effectiveness-implementation trial.

BACKGROUND: The implementation of evidence-based practices in critical care faces specific challenges, including intense time pressure and patient acuity. These challenges result in evidence-to-practice gaps that diminish the impact of proven-effective interventions for patients requiring intensive care unit support. Research is needed to understand and address implementation determinants in critical care settings. METHODS: The Handoffs and Transitions in Critical Care-Understanding Scalability (HATRICC-US) study is a Type 2 hybrid effectiveness-implementation trial of standardized operating

Study Protocol: It is time to dig deeper: A cross-country implementation mapping study of the iFightDepression® (online self-management) tool.

BACKGROUND: The iFightDepression® (iFD) tool is an internet-based self-management program for individuals with milder forms of depression, used alongside support from trained user guides (e.g., family physicians). Despite strong evidence supporting guided internet-based cognitive behavioural therapy (iCBT), adherence to the iFD tool and its uptake across implementing countries remain variable. METHODS: This implementation mapping study will be conducted in Germany, Poland, and Spain. Guided by the Consolidated Framework for Implementation Research (CFIR), we aim to identify barriers, facilita

Barriers and facilitators to developing an equity dashboard to identify disparities in kidney transplant access: a mixed methods study.

INTRODUCTION: While kidney transplant disparities are well-documented, little is known about disparities in the evaluation process after referral. Electronic dashboards interfacing with electronic health records can disaggregate patient data to identify potential avenues for reducing disparities. This cross-sectional study assessed contextual and design factors that would inform implementation of an 'Equity Dashboard' at one transplant center. METHODS: Clinicians, implementation science experts, and patients were interviewed. Qualitative data were analyzed using thematic analysis guided by th

Mapping the components of the effective implementation of diabetes prevention programmes after gestational diabetes mellitus: a protocol for a scoping review.

INTRODUCTION: Women with a history of gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) have a high lifetime risk of developing type 2 diabetes. Diabetes prevention programmes may reduce this risk. However, challenges related to the successful implementation of diabetes prevention programmes after GDM exist. Our objective is to map the components of the effective implementation of diabetes prevention programmes after GDM. We also plan to connect the available evidence on the effective implementation of diabetes prevention programmes to the Consolidated Framework for Implementation Research. METHODS AND ANA

Behavioral and social sciences at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Critical disciplines for public health.

The mission of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is to promote health and quality of life by preventing and controlling disease, injury, and disability. Fifty years ago, CDC's efforts were focused on epidemiologic and laboratory studies of malaria, typhus, and plague. Today, CDC's activities cover a broad range of diseases and conditions, and a broader range of disciplines are required to address these diverse public health problems. The behavioral and social sciences have a critical role to play in helping the public understand risk group characteristics and the frequency,

Geoengineering: proactive measures to tackle climate change.

As of 20 August, 2023, extensive parts of northern China including the capital city of Beijing had experienced arguably the hottest summer in recent years, recording consecutive days of high temperatures at or near 40°C. Against this backdrop, National Science Review (NSR) organized a web forum on a climate-related topic that needs more exposure to Chinese public and researchers alike: geoengineering. Compared to commonly-known methods to address climate change such as emission reduction, geoengineering proposes to take much more proactive measures such as injecting aerosol into the stratosphe

Social Justice, Science Agency, and Collaborations: Using Participatory Science to Enhance Learning Outcomes in Postsecondary STEM Courses.

Participatory sciences (any science that depends on the knowledge or involvement of the public) are increasingly being included in undergraduate courses. Although they have most often been integrated into undergraduate courses to engage students, we expand ideas of how these approaches can be used to promote student learning. First, we explore three theoretical frameworks, culturally sustaining pedagogy, control value theory, and the ICAP (Interactive, Constructive, Active, Passive) framework, that help explain why incorporating participatory science is an effective classroom practice at disru

Comprehensive integration of mental health screening and triage with mental performance services through a sport science hub model in collegiate sport.

Collegiate sport environments often bring mental health (MH) and performance (MP) into close interaction; yet, screening, triage, referral, and MP support often remain operationally fragmented. This fragmentation may weaken follow-through after screening, limit coordination across clinical and performance services, and create uncertainty around privacy, scope boundaries, and accountability. In this Perspective, drawing on implementation science, integrated care, and systems-oriented organizational design, we suggest that a promising direction in athlete MH-MP support is not simply expanding sc

Trends of Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) Research in Indonesia: A Systematic Review.

This study provides an overview of water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) research trends in Indonesia from 1975 until April 2021. The systematic review compiled 272 articles related to the Sustainable Development Goals 6.1 and 6.2 in Indonesia, which were published in the Web of Science and Scopus databases. The results showed that the water-related topic (41%) was discussed more often than sanitation (22%) or hygiene (13%). Furthermore, the social theme (39%) was dominantly found in all these articles, mostly finding determinants of WASH-related behavior. However, few WASH implementation stud

From Surgical Innovation to Population Impact: Robot-Assisted Radical Prostatectomy and the Evolution of Surgical Public Health in Brazil's Unified Health System.

Brazil's Unified Health System (Sistema Único de Saúde, SUS) represents one of the world's largest universal health systems and provides a unique real-world platform for integrating prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and survivorship across the cancer continuum. While One Health frameworks have traditionally focused on infectious diseases, environmental exposures, and planetary health, their application to surgical oncology and health-system innovation remains insufficiently explored. This article proposes that the SUS offers a valuable model for operationalizing One Health and population healt

Identifying barriers and facilitators to deprescribing benzodiazepines and sedative hypnotics in the hospital setting using the Theoretical Domains Framework and the Capability, Opportunity, Motivation and Behaviour (COM-B) Model: a qualitative study.

OBJECTIVES: Geriatric guidelines strongly recommend avoiding benzodiazepines and non-benzodiazepine sedative hypnotics in older adults. Hospitalisation may provide an important opportunity to begin the process of deprescribing these medications, particularly as new contraindications arise. We used implementation science models and qualitative interviews to describe barriers and facilitators to deprescribing benzodiazepines and non-benzodiazepine sedative hypnotics in the hospital and develop potential interventions to address identified barriers. DESIGN: We used two implementation science mod

The Trouble With "Antiscience": Regulatory Science, Politics, and the COVID-19 Pandemic.

We argue that the label "antiscience" is inaccurate and counterproductive and that its use may hamper the implementation of public health goals. The current crisis is the result of a complex dynamic of loss of trust, rooted in the very real limitations of regulatory science and the inevitable tensions of the relations between science and politics. These have created a political opportunity structure for interested actors to construct mistrust in expertise relating to the production, authorization, and dissemination of scientific facts. We illustrate these dynamics through 3 brief case studies

Social sciences research in neglected tropical diseases 2: A bibliographic analysis.

BACKGROUND: There are strong arguments for social science and interdisciplinary research in the neglected tropical diseases. These diseases represent a rich and dynamic interplay between vector, host, and pathogen which occurs within social, physical and biological contexts. The overwhelming sense, however, is that neglected tropical diseases research is a biomedical endeavour largely excluding the social sciences. The purpose of this review is to provide a baseline for discussing the quantum and nature of the science that is being conducted, and the extent to which the social sciences are a p

"It's Like Disrupting Internally:" a Qualitative Study of Opportunities and Limitations to Promote Diversity in Participant Recruitment in Health Research.

Despite bearing a disproportionate burden from poor health outcomes, members of racial and ethnic groups who experience health disparities are consistently underrepresented in health research. While many have sought to understand this problem by focusing on community mistrust of science, there is increasing recognition that research teams' attitudes and practices contribute to the lack of diversity in research participation in multiple ways. In this study, we explored the experiences of research team members as they attempted to implement practice changes to increase the recruitment of underre

Implementation of activities of daily living retraining for individuals in post-traumatic amnesia.

Background Despite evidence of the efficacy of activities of daily living (ADL) retraining during post-traumatic amnesia (PTA) following traumatic brain injury (TBI), utilisation of this intervention in practice is unclear. Utilising an implementation science framework, the Consolidated Framework for Implementation Research, this study explored efforts to translate ADL retraining during PTA into the clinical practice of occupational therapists (OTs) working in TBI rehabilitation settings across Australia. Methods Participants were 44 OTs who attended a day-long training workshop that included

Determinants of Qigong, Tai Chi, and Yoga Use for Health Conditions: A Systematic Review Protocol.

INTRODUCTION: Mind-body movement interventions such as qi gong, tai chi, and yoga are recommended in clinical practice guidelines to improve outcomes for several health conditions. However, use of these interventions for health conditions, or the integration of these interventions within healthcare settings, is low. A systematic synthesis of implementation determinants (i.e., barriers and facilitators) is needed to increase adoption. Similarly, determinants may influence other implementation outcomes, such as scalability or sustainability of these interventions in a healthcare system or commun
