Metabolic and ventilatory constraints in long COVID individuals.

Long COVID is characterized by persistent symptoms and physiological impairments beyond acute infection. Oxygen consumption (VO₂) and ventilatory efficiency, key indicators of cardiorespiratory fitness, are commonly diminished in this population, contributing to exercise intolerance. This study compared cardiorespiratory patterns and exercise capacity among individuals with Long COVID (LCG), those with resolved symptoms (Short COVID; SCG), and healthy controls (CG). The secondary objective was to assess longitudinal changes over six months. Cross-sectional comparisons at baseline addressed the

Effect of Hyposalivation on Bread Mastication in Healthy Individuals.

BACKGROUND: Solid foods mix with saliva during mastication to form a bolus. The water content of the food bolus and lubrication in the oral cavity are critical factors that determine the dynamics of the masticatory muscles. Among other factors, fat is believed to affect masticatory behaviour by lubricating foods. OBJECTIVES: The effects of artificially induced hyposalivation on masticatory behaviour and bolus properties were investigated using bread with varying water content and spreads to evaluate how these properties affect masticatory behaviour with hyposalivation. METHODS: Twenty health

[Vasoactive agents in septic shock-individualized strategies].

Hemodynamic stabilization and preservation of organ perfusion are central elements in the management of septic shock. This is achieved by fluid resuscitation and by administration of vasoactive agents. Current guidelines recommend norepinephrine as the first-line vasoactive substance. In cases of high norepinephrine requirements the addition of nonadrenergic vasopressors is recommended. Furthermore, evidence suggests that early use of complementary vasoactive substances may provide additional benefits. Such a regimen, in terms of a broad-spectrum vasopressor approach, appears physiologically p

Continuous glucose monitoring in high-risk individuals.

In recent years, continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) has become a major means of monitoring blood glucose in diabetic patients, reducing the need for frequent fingertip blood collection compared to traditional glucose monitoring. For children and pregnant patients, this can effectively improve the psychological discomfort of these two groups of high-risk patients, increasing compliance and further optimizing blood glucose. Some derived metrics, such as time in range and glycemic variability, are effective in predicting diabetic microvascular and macrovascular lesions, further contributing to o

Heterogeneity and individualized therapy for eosinophilic granulomatosis with polyangiitis.

Eosinophilic granulomatosis with polyangiitis (EGPA), as a heterogeneous component of antineutrophil cytoplasmic antibody-associated vasculitis, may be induced by a series of environmental and genetic factors, involved with a variety of immune cells and immune components, and presented with various clinical manifestations, with multiple organs and systems (respiratory, skin, heart, kidney, nerve, etc.) involved. The choice of glucocorticoid (GC) dosage and immunosuppressant in traditional treatment strategies varies greatly from individual to individual and is not universally applicable in all

Obesity paradox in individuals with type 1 diabetes.

The obesity paradox describes a counterintuitive phenomenon where overweight or mildly obese individuals with chronic diseases show better survival compared to those with normal weight. While this paradox has been reported in conditions such as heart failure and type 2 diabetes, its presence in type 1 diabetes (T1D) remains uncertain. This mini review summarizes current evidence from large cohort studies and a meta-analysis examining the association between body mass index (BMI) and clinical outcomes in individuals with T1D. Most findings do not support a protective effect of higher BMI; inste

Neurobehavioral profile of individuals with pathogenic variants in CHD3.

Snijders Blok-Campeau syndrome (SNIBCPS), a neurodevelopmental disorder first described in 2018, is caused by heterozygous pathogenic variants in CHD3. Its encoded protein plays a crucial role in the development of the nervous system of embryos. While phenotypic traits have been broadly defined, i.e., global neurodevelopmental delays such as intellectual disabilities and delayed speech acquisition, and physical features such as characteristic facial features and macrocephaly, the phenotypic spectrum has not been further assessed. We present the neurobehavioral profile of 38 individuals with va

Individualized Fracture Prevention for Postmenopausal Women with Osteopenia.

Osteopenia-defined by a bone mineral density T-score between -1.0 and -2.5-is more common than osteoporosis and accounts for most fragility fractures in postmenopausal women. Approximately 50% of Korean women aged ≥ 50 years have osteopenia. Despite this high prevalence, optimal therapeutic strategies remain unclear. This review summarizes the clinical significance and management of osteopenia. Clinical practice often categorizes osteopenia into mild, moderate, and severe based on specific T-score ranges. Studies indicate that women transitioning from normal or moderate osteopenia to lower bon

Analyzing Foot Posture Malalignments in Obese Individuals.

Background and objective  Obesity often leads to foot deformities due to the increased pressure on the feet, the body's most distal parts. Obesity-induced foot malalignments can impact foot posture, making it essential to study these changes for better understanding and management. Hence, the study aimed to examine foot posture malalignments in obese individuals. Methods  In this cross-sectional study, 216 participants - 108 obese and 108 with normal BMI - were selected based on inclusion and exclusion criteria. The study was performed at Krishna College of Physiotherapy (KCPT), Karad. A well-

Respiratory oscillometry in individuals with fibrodysplasia ossificans progressiva.

BACKGROUND: Fibrodysplasia ossificans progressiva (FOP) is an ultra-rare genetic bone disease that is characterized by progressive heterotopic ossification of the thoracic cavity. Prognosis is poor with cardiopulmonary complications being the main cause of death. Spirometry is a well-established metric of functional exercise capacity and prognosis in lung diseases but its use is limited in this population. Accuracy and validity of spirometry is dependent on forced expiratory maneuvers which are difficult to perform for individuals with FOP. Oscillometry is an effort-independent pulmonary funct

Brain aging among individuals with trigeminal neuralgia.

Trigeminal neuralgia (TN) is a complex orofacial neuropathic pain condition with limited understanding of underlying mechanisms and therapeutic options. Emerging evidence suggests the involvement of the brain in persons with TN including widespread brain changes when employing a widely used brain aging biomarker that estimates a predicted brain age difference or brain age gap. The aim of the present cross-sectional study was to assess the predicted brain age difference (brain-PAD) or brain age gap across two TN subtypes (classical TN, and secondary/idiopathic TN) in comparison with age-and sex

Methylation profile of individuals with sickle cell trait.

Sickle cell trait (SCT) is due to heterozygosity for the β-globin sickle cell mutation. SCT recently has been associated with increased risk of various adverse health outcomes. DNA methylation (DNAm) is one potential mechanism by which SCT may impact disease risk. To identify DNAm sites associated with SCT, we conducted an epigenome-wide association (EWAS) meta-analysis using whole blood Illumina EPIC array data available in a total of 3,677 African American participants (including 1,071 with SCT) from the Women's Health Initiative and Jackson Heart Study. We identified 103 differentially meth

Individual gaze shapes diverging neural representations.

Complex visual stimuli evoke diverse patterns of gaze, but previous research suggests that their neural representations are shared across brains. Here, we used hyperalignment to compare visual responses between observers viewing identical stimuli. We find that individual eye movements enhance cortical visual responses but also lead to representational divergence. Pairwise differences in the spatial distribution of gaze and in semantic salience predict pairwise representational divergence in V1 and inferior temporal cortex, respectively. This suggests that individual gaze sculpts individual vis

Is there evidence for using ketamine among individuals with dementia?

The aim of this short narrative review was to evaluate the existing literature regarding the clinical use of ketamine among individuals with dementia, especially those with behavioral disturbances. PubMed, Cochrane, and Ovid (Embase, APA PsycINFO, and MEDLINE) databases were searched for abstracts using the search terms "ketamine" AND "dementia." Only articles describing the use of ketamine in individuals with dementia were included. Articles that did not include individuals with dementia, did not use ketamine, were published in a non-English language, primarily described animal studies, or we

Families with multiple individuals with acute leukemia in their pedigrees.

Forty-one families with multiple cases of de novo acute myeloid leukemia (AML), B-cell acute lymphocytic leukemia (B-ALL), or both are presented. The families were randomly collected from physicians, genetic counselors, and other sources. Medical records were collected and reviewed for all families. In 17 of the families, a parent and child with acute leukemia were identified; and in 15 of the pairs, the parent and child were of the same sex. Nine grandparent-grandchild affected pairs with AML-AML were identified, occurring in six families, and six of those pairs were also of the same sex. Ant
