Evolution of insect arylalkylamine N-acetyltransferases: structural evidence from the yellow fever mosquito, Aedes aegypti.

Arylalkylamine N-acetyltransferase (aaNAT) catalyzes the transacetylation from acetyl-CoA to arylalkylamines. aaNATs are involved in sclerotization and neurotransmitter inactivation in insects. Phyletic distribution analysis confirms three clusters of aaNAT-like sequences in insects: typical insect aaNAT, polyamine NAT-like aaNAT, and mosquito unique putative aaNAT (paaNAT). Here we studied three proteins: aaNAT2, aaNAT5b, and paaNAT7, each from a different cluster. aaNAT2, a protein from the typical insect aaNAT cluster, uses histamine as a substrate as well as the previously identified aryla

Microbiological and molecular analysis of the microbiota of insects present in the surgical area.

BACKGROUND: The presence of insects in hospital environments poses a potential risk for the dissemination of pathogenic bacteria, including multidrug-resistant species. Despite strict sanitation protocols, some arthropod populations persist in less regulated areas, potentially acting as mechanical vectors of bacterial contamination. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to analyze the bacterial diversity associated with insects collected in hospital settings and assess their potential role in spreading pathogens relevant to public health. METHODS: A descriptive observational approach was employed to

Kairomone attractant for the leafmining fly, Liriomyza bryoniae (Diptera, Agromyzidae).

A field test carried out in an industrial greenhouse in Lithuania revealed the attractiveness of synthetic methyl salicylate (MeSa) towards an economically important leafmining tomato pest, Liriomyza bryoniae (Kaltenbach) (Diptera, Agromyzidae). The behavioural reaction of the flies depended very much on the simultaneous presence of both olfactory and visual stimuli. The attractiveness depended on the colour of a sticky trap: MeSa attracted significantly more flies (ca. 2.2 times) when placed in yellow traps than in aluminium foil colour ones, when catches in such traps were compared to a corr

Protection against Mycobacterium ulcerans lesion development by exposure to aquatic insect saliva.

BACKGROUND: Buruli ulcer is a severe human skin disease caused by Mycobacterium ulcerans. This disease is primarily diagnosed in West Africa with increasing incidence. Antimycobacterial drug therapy is relatively effective during the preulcerative stage of the disease, but surgical excision of lesions with skin grafting is often the ultimate treatment. The mode of transmission of this Mycobacterium species remains a matter of debate, and relevant interventions to prevent this disease lack (i) the proper understanding of the M. ulcerans life history traits in its natural aquatic ecosystem and (

Effectiveness of mosquito repellents for human: A systematic review of human-based studies.

Mosquito repellents are personal protection tools against mosquito-borne diseases, but their effectiveness varies across active ingredients, formulations, and mosquito species. This systematic review followed PRISMA 2020 guidance to summarize human studies published between 2015 and 2025 that evaluated mosquito repellents delivered as topical application, wearable devices, spatial products, or treated clothing. Searches in Scopus and PubMed identified 1287 records, of which 19 met eligibility criteria. Data on complete protection time (CPT), repellency rate, safety, formulation type, and targe

Field evaluation of entomological surveillance techniques for leishmaniasis vector sand flies (Diptera: Psychodidae).

Leishmaniasis remains a major public health concern in Sri Lanka, as emphasized in the first National Strategic Plan for the Prevention and Control of Leishmaniasis. The lack of a systematic surveillance plan was identified as one of the key challenges to implementing a control programme. Therefore, this study evaluated the efficacy of different entomological techniques for leishmaniasis vector surveillance. Monthly collections were conducted from December 2023 to June 2024 in two Medical Officer of Health areas, Divulapitiya and Mirigama, in the Gampaha District. The surveillance techniques i

An improved, multimodal, trap for Triatoma infestans, a kissing bug vector of Chagas disease: laboratory tests.

Triatomines, commonly known as kissing bugs, are vectors of the protozoan Trypanosoma cruzi, responsible for Chagas disease in the Americas. In South America, Triatoma infestans is one of the main vectors of that disease. Triatomine control programs require practical, economical, and reliable tools and methods to monitor infestation in homes, especially when insects are present at low densities, and detection sensitivity must be improved. In a previous work, a sticky pitfall trap baited with a human-based synthetic odor blend (L(+)lactic acid + valeric acid + ammonia) was developed. That trap

Spatial modeling and risk assessment of chagas disease vector distribution in Espírito Santo, Brazil: A comprehensive approach for targeted control.

Chagas disease, a persistent and life-threatening infection caused by the protozoan Trypanosoma cruzi, remains a significant public health concern in Latin America. Despite the Brazilian State of Espírito Santo (ES) not being classified as a high-risk area, the presence of epidemiologically significant triatomines like Panstrongylus megistus suggests a latent risk of T. cruzi transmission. This study, employing spatial modeling, assesses the distribution of key triatomine species in ES and predicts areas at risk for Chagas disease transmission. Our models, constructed with Maxent, KUENM, and Q

Exploiting nectar and blood feeding cues and phagostimulants to optimise Attractive Targeted Sugar Baits against a sand fly vector of leishmaniasis.

BACKGROUND: Leishmaniasis presents a major public health problem for a large number of countries requiring effective integrated management of the vector, sand flies, for sustained control. Such strategies need to be economically and environmentally sustainable and adaptable to the behaviour of local vectors. One such tool is Attractive Targeted Sugar Baits (ATSB) that exploit the necessity of sand flies to acquire sugars between bloodmeals. Here we explored the kinetics and cues for sugar and blood feeding to improve the efficacy of ATSBs against sand flies. METHODS: A fluorescent assay was d

Impact of ivermectin and vector control on onchocerciasis transmission in Togo: Assessing the empirical evidence on trends in infection and entomological indicators.

BACKGROUND: The World Health Organization's 2021-2030 Road Map for Neglected Tropical Diseases boosted global commitment towards the elimination of onchocerciasis, but the timeline to elimination will vary strongly between countries in Africa. To assess progress towards elimination in the Republic of Togo, we reviewed the history of control and time trends in infection. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: We collated all available programmatic, entomological, and epidemiological data since the initiation of the Onchocerciasis Control Programme (OCP) in Togo through different data sources. We then

Use of vector control to protect people from sleeping sickness in the focus of Bonon (Côte d'Ivoire).

BACKGROUND: Gambian human African trypanosomiasis (gHAT) is a neglected tropical disease caused by Trypanosoma brucei gambiense transmitted by tsetse flies (Glossina). In Côte d'Ivoire, Bonon is the most important focus of gHAT, with 325 cases diagnosed from 2000 to 2015 and efforts against gHAT have relied largely on mass screening and treatment of human cases. We assessed whether the addition of tsetse control by deploying Tiny Targets offers benefit to sole reliance on the screen-and-treat strategy. METHODOLOGY AND PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: In 2015, we performed a census of the human population

Sandfly surveillance and investigation of Leishmania spp. DNA in sandflies in Kosovo.

In the past decade, leishmaniasis seems to be re-emerging in Balkan countries. There are serious implications that Kosovo is a visceral leishmaniasis endemic region with autochthonous transmission; nevertheless, surveillance of vectors, reservoirs or the disease is not yet established. Gaining knowledge about sandfly vector species is a prerequisite for the development of a monitoring and control plan in the future. After a long gap in research of over 70 years, sandfly studies in Kosovo were resumed in 2014. During this presence/absence study, nine sandfly species were detected: Phlebotomus p

High-resolution habitat suitability model for Phlebotomus pedifer, the vector of cutaneous leishmaniasis in southwestern Ethiopia.

BACKGROUND: Phlebotomus pedifer is the vector for Leishmania aethiopica causing cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) in southwestern Ethiopia. Previous research on the transmission dynamics of CL resulted in recommendations for vector control. In order to target these interventions towards affected areas, a comprehensive understanding of the spatial distribution of P. pedifer at high spatial resolution is required. Therefore, this study determined the environmental predictors that facilitate the distribution of P. pedifer and created a map indicating the areas where conditions are suitable for surviva

Historical Elimination of Onchocerciasis from Victoria Nile Focus in Central Uganda Verified Using WHO Criteria.

Uganda has verified elimination of seven onchocerciasis foci since 2007 when the nationwide onchocerciasis elimination policy was launched. However, the Victoria Nile focus (which was eliminated in the early 1970s) had not been verified. The objective of this study was to verify this focus to the WHO verification guidelines and bring it in line with recently eliminated foci. Vector control with dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane was the main intervention used at the Victoria Nile from the 1950s to the 1970s. Historical fly collection sites along River Nile were identified for recent fly collectio

Environmental factors associated with the distribution of Loa loa vectors Chrysops spp. in Central and West Africa: seeing the forest for the trees.

BACKGROUND: Loiasis is caused by the filarial parasite Loa loa, which is widespread through Central and West Africa and largely confined the tropical equatorial rainforests. The tabanid flies Chrysops silacea and Chrysops dimidiata are the main vectors driving transmission. This study aimed to better define the spatial distribution and ecological niche of the two vectors to help define spatial-temporal risk and target appropriate, timely intervention strategies for filariasis control and elimination programmes. METHODS: Chrysops spp. distributions were determined by collating information from

Safe chemical repellents to prevent the spread of invasive ants.

BACKGROUND: The red imported fire ant, Solenopsis invicta, is one of the most dangerous invasive species in the world. Fire ants can spread by hiding among plant material and soil that are transported from infested areas in vehicles and vessels. Therefore, efficient repellents may be used to prevent fire ants from infesting transported goods. Although some fire ant repellants have been identified, novel, cost-effective and environmentally friendly materials for fire ant control are still needed. Recent studies with other model insects have suggested readily available, non-toxic alternatives (e

Bionomics of Phlebotomus argentipes in villages in Bihar, India with insights into efficacy of IRS-based control measures.

BACKGROUND: Visceral leishmaniasis (VL) is a deadly vector-borne disease. Approximately 90% of Indian VL cases occur in Bihar, where the sand fly, Phlebotomus argentipes, is the principal vector. Sand fly control in Bihar consists of indoor residual spraying (IRS), the practice of spraying the inner walls of village dwellings with insecticides. Prior researchers have evaluated success of IRS-control by estimating vector abundance in village houses, but the number of sampling periods (n = 2-3) were minimal, and outdoor-resting P. argentipes were neglected. We describe a large-scale field study,

Evaluation of Partially Submerged Sticky Traps On Lake Spillways For Adult Black Fly (Diptera: Simuliidae) Surveillance and Arbovirus Detection.

Sentinel surveillance systems demonstrate an improved ability to supplement monitoring data and anticipate arbovirus outbreaks (i.e., sentinel avian species). Management complications can arise during unpredictable or unseasonal disease detections, especially in rural areas where resident distribution is patchy. Using spillways near residential lake communities as static surveillance locations, we tested a novel partially submerged sticky trapping technique and screened wild populations of adult female black flies (Diptera: Simuliidae) for West Nile virus (WNV) and eastern equine encephalitis
