Binding characteristics and physicochemical basis of C-minus odorant-binding protein 8 in western flower thrips, Frankliniella occidentalis, with various host vegetable volatiles.

Western flower thrips (WFT), Frankliniella occidentalis (Pergande) (Thysanoptera: Thripidae), is a globally invasive polyphagous pest that relies on olfaction to sense host plants. Odorant-binding proteins (OBPs) in insect sensillar lymph mediate interactions with plant volatiles. However, the physicochemical mechanisms by which OBPs in F. occidentalis bind to host-plant volatiles, the key amino acid residues involved in these interactions and the structural characteristics of the preferred ligands remain unclear. Here, we cloned a novel OBP, FoccOBP8, which belongs to the C-minus OBP subfamil

SPE-UHPLC-MS/MS Method for Simultaneous Quantification of 50 Pesticide Biomarkers Across Nine Current-Use Chemical Classes in Human Urine.

A comprehensive ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (UHPLC-MS/MS) method was developed for the simultaneous quantification of 50 pesticide biomarkers across nine current-use chemical classes in human urine. These classes include organophosphorus insecticides (which encompass dialkyl phosphates and specific metabolites), pyrethroid insecticides, fungicides, neonicotinoid insecticides, herbicides, insect repellents, organochlorine pesticide metabolites, and plant growth regulators. The method employs solid-phase extraction (SPE) for sample preparation, requiring…

Essential Oils and Health.

Essential oils (EOs) have risen in popularity over the past decade. These oils function in society as holistic integrative modalities to traditional medicinal treatments, where many Americans substitute EOs in place of other prescribed medications. EOs are found in a multitude of products including food flavoring, soaps, lotions, shampoos, hair styling products, cologne, laundry detergents, and even insect repellents. EOs are complex substances comprised of hundreds of components that can vary greatly in their composition depending upon the extraction process by the producer or the origin of t…

Soil legacy of SiO2 nanoparticles impedes fall armyworm oviposition by reprogramming constitutive maize volatiles.

BACKGROUND: Host-plant selection for oviposition strongly influences herbivorous insect population establishment and crop damage, and is largely mediated by plant volatile cues. Silicon dioxide nanoparticles (SiO2NPs) can modify plant-insect interactions, but whether their effects persist across crop generations through soil-mediated legacy effects remains unknown. Here, we investigated whether foliar SiO2NP application generates a soil legacy that reprograms maize volatiles and alters the host-plant preference in the fall armyworm (Spodoptera frugiperda). RESULTS: Maize grown in SiO2NP-condi

Identification of unique highly hetero-substituted benzenes as chemical weapons of springtails by a combination of trace analytical methods with DFT calculations and synthesis.

Springtails (Collembola) are important members of the soil mesofauna. They are small, often less than 1-2 mm in length. A typical escape response of most surface-living species is to jump, using their furca. However, some species also use chemical defence against predators. While the defence chemistry of higher insects has been well studied, reports from the basal Collembola are rare, linked to the difficulties in obtaining enough biomass. We herein report on the identification and repellent activity of compounds detected in Ceratophysella denticulata. Extracts with various solvents obtained f

Chemical characterization and bioactivity of cigarette butt extract as oviposition deterrent and larvicide against Aedes aegypti.

Aedes aegypti, the primary vector of viruses such as dengue, chikungunya, and yellow fever, poses a global health challenge. Traditional vector control strategies predominantly rely on broad-spectrum insecticides, which not only contribute to development of resistance in mosquitoes but also pose significant risks to non-target organisms and the environment. Here, we assessed the potential of cigarette butt (CB) extract for the management of A. aegypti population. Globally, 4.5 trillion CBs are being wasted annually, which is expected to rise to nine trillion by 2025. So, repurposing this waste

Efficacy of a spatial repellent for control of Aedes-borne virus transmission: A cluster-randomized trial in Iquitos, Peru.

Over half the world's population is at risk for viruses transmitted by Aedes mosquitoes, such as dengue and Zika. The primary vector, Aedes aegypti, thrives in urban environments. Despite decades of effort, cases and geographic range of Aedes-borne viruses (ABVs) continue to expand. Rigorously proven vector control interventions that measure protective efficacy against ABV diseases are limited to Wolbachia in a single trial in Indonesia and do not include any chemical intervention. Spatial repellents, a new option for efficient deployment, are designed to decrease human exposure to ABVs by rel

Creams formulated with Ocimum gratissimum L. and Lantana camara L. crude extracts and fractions as mosquito repellents against Aedes aegypti L. (Diptera: Culicidae).

Mosquitoes are the most deadly vectors of parasites that cause diseases such as malaria, yellow fever, and filariasis. In view of the recent increased interest in developing plant origin insecticides as an alternative to chemical insecticides, the objective of this study was to determine the repellent activity of creams formulated with methanol crude extract (MCE), hexane fraction (HF), and ethyl acetate fractions (EAFs) of Ocimum gratissimum and Lantana camara leaves in single and combined actions against female Aedes aegypti. Evaluation was carried out in the net cages (30 by 30 by 30 cm) co

Mosquito repellency mediated by skin commensal Bacillus species via volatile metabolite reprogramming.

Individual variation in human attractiveness to mosquitoes critically influences vector-borne disease transmission, and this phenomenon arises from multiple underlying factors. This study integrated human skin microbiome profiling, non-human primate in situ intervention, and volatilomics to uncover a microbial-mediated mechanism underlying host-specific mosquito repellency. Bacillus species were identified as a microbial signature associated with reduced mosquito attraction in humans. Targeted Intervention of B. licheniformis and B. paralicheniformis on primate skin was sufficient to significa

Pulex irritans: Historic repellents, insecticides, and flea traps from the 16th to the 19th century.

There is a long-term relationship between humans and the human flea, Pulex irritans. The invention of the microscope in the late 1500s was a turning point for the scientific investigation of the flea. Microscopists like Robert Hooke (1635-1702) or Antony van Leeuwenhoek (1632-1723) became most attracted. Leeuwenhoek discovered the sexual reproduction of fleas. During the Victorian period, their role as vectors of disease was scientifically determined and recorded, which was stimulated by the plague epidemic of 1894 in Canton and Hong Kong. The flea's position as an annoying but harmless housem
