Alpha Interferon (IFN) membrane receptor expression was studied in four human tumor cell lines from several origins: Burkitt's lymphoma (Daudi cells), cervix adenocarcinoma (HeLa cells), larynx carcinoma (HEp-2 cells) and a grade III-IV glioblastoma (GL-5 cells). We describe a patient with HbE-beta thalassaemia and chronic hepatitis C virus infection (genotype 1a) who was treated successfully with peginterferon alfa-2b and ribavirin, following failure to respond to standard interferon and ribavirin therapy. Clinical trials of the gene engineered human alpha 2-interferon as ointment were performed. The ointment was used in the treatment of patients with relapsing herpes of various localization, relapsing aphthous stomatitis and pemphigus vulgaris. It was shown that the ointment was harmless and its therapeutic effect was favourable. The preparation is recommended for introduction into the practice of public health.
