Associations Between Online Learning, Smartphone Addiction Problems, and Psychological Symptoms in Chinese College Students After the COVID-19 Pandemic.

BACKGROUND: Smartphone-based online education gained popularity during and after the COVID-19 pandemic. Although recent studies have highlighted the association between problematic smartphone use (PSU) and mental health symptoms, the potential role of online learning in this relationship remains unclear. This study aimed to analyze the relationships between higher education modes, PSU, and related psychological symptoms in university students. METHODS: A total of 1,629 Chinese university students from five provinces completed a web-based questionnaire survey between March 2020 and October 202

Prevalence of internet addiction among Chinese adolescents: A comprehensive meta-analysis of 164 epidemiological studies.

BACKGROUND: Internet Addiction (IA) among Chinese adolescents is a growing concern that is associated with considerable psychological, social, and academic problems. Although numerous past studies on IA prevalence in China have been conducted, the findings have been mixed. This meta-analysis aimed to examine the pooled IA prevalence among adolescents in China and its associated factors. METHODS: Both English (PubMed, Web of Science, PsycINFO) and Chinese (Wan Fang, CNKI) databases were systematically searched. Pooled prevalence and study heterogeneity were analyzed using the random effects mo

Screens and brains: multimodal neuroimaging insights into mechanisms of problematic smartphone use.

BACKGROUND: Problematic smartphone use (PSU) is increasingly regarded as a form of behavioral addiction, marked by compulsive engagement and diminished self-regulation. An expanding body of evidence points to distinct neural correlates of PSU, including heightened sensitivity to smartphone-related cues, aberrant reward processing, and executive dysfunction. OBJECTIVES: This systematic review synthesizes contemporary evidence from multimodal neuroimaging studies that seek to elucidate the neurobiological substrates of PSU. To unify and contextualize these findings, a social-cognitive framework

Exploring the relationship between social exclusion and social media addiction: The mediating roles of anger and impulsivity.

Previous studies have examined the relationships between some antecedents and social media addiction. However, an important factor - social exclusion - has not received enough attention in the literature, the underlying psychological mechanisms that link social exclusion to social media addiction are still unclear. The current study investigated the relation between social exclusion and social media addiction as well as the mediating effects of anger and impulsivity on this relationship. An online survey was conducted, the sample included 573 university students (323 females). The results sugg

A bidirectional association between smartphone addiction and depression among college students: A cross-lagged panel model.

BACKGROUND: Smartphone addiction (SA) is associated with adverse consequences, especially for freshmen. Evidence indicates that SA is associated with depression, and it is necessary to conduct a longitudinal study to explore the association further. METHODS: SA (measured by the Smartphone Addiction Scale-Short Version) and depression (measured by the Zung's Self-Rating Depression Scale) among 1,186 freshmen were surveyed at baseline and a respective 12-month follow-up for each participant. The application of a cross-lagged panel model approach (CLPM) revealed an association between SA and dep

Joint effects of children's emotional problems and parental depressive symptoms on the occurrence of internet gaming disorder among children and adolescents: A longitudinal study.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Parental depressive symptoms may aggravate the effects of children's emotional problems on risks for Internet gaming disorder (IGD). Here we examined the joint effects of children's emotional problems and parents' depressive symptoms on the incidence of IGD. METHODS: A large prospective, population-based cohort tested potential interactions between children's emotional problems, parents' depressive symptoms, and incidence of high risk of IGD (HRIGD). Family dyads (n=2,031) that included children who were non-HRIGD at baseline completed assessments of childhood and parenta

No Significant Changes in Addictive and Problematic Behaviors During the COVID-19 Pandemic and Related Lockdowns: A Three-Wave Longitudinal Study.

INTRODUCTION: The COVID-19 outbreak and related lockdowns brought substantial changes in people's lives and led to concerns about possible increases of addictive behaviors at the initial stages of the pandemic. To examine these concerns, the aim of the present study was to assess longitudinal changes in addictive and problematic behaviors (i.e., problematic social media use, Internet gaming disorder, gambling disorder, problematic pornography use, and compulsive sexual behavior disorder) over time during the COVID-19 pandemic. METHODS: Three waves of data collection took place in different st

[Computer games and Internet addiction as well as pathological gambling. Therapy approaches].

In accordance with the development of substance-related disorders, behavioral addictions, such as internet use disorder and pathological gambling are regarded as repetitive excessive behavior which increasingly turns into an automatic action which is difficult to control intentionally. This automatic behavior is reinforced by learning processes, associated with neuroadaption, especially in the dopaminergic reward system. Treatment aims at finding alternatives for gambling or online activities and reducing times online so that social contacts need to be re-established. The following article pro

[Impulse control disorders and Parkinson's disease].

A variety of behavioral disorders occurring abruptly in patients with Parkinson's disease (PD) has been recently published and attracted considerable attention in the press. Taking the form of pathological gambling, compulsive shopping, addiction to Internet and to other recreational activities, hypersexuality or bulimia, impulse control disorders (ICD) related to PD are probably more frequent than previously appreciated and may have consequences as spectacular as disastrous for the involved patients. ICD are currently viewed as particular adverse reactions to antiparkinsonian medications, not

Associations between Problematic Gambling, Gaming, and Internet Use: A Cross-Sectional Population Survey.

BACKGROUND: While pathological gambling, or gambling disorder, is an established diagnosis, a link to other potential behavioural addictions has been suggested. The present study aimed to investigate whether signs of problem gaming and problematic internet use are related to problem gambling in the general population, while including other potential risk factors. METHODS: A cross-sectional study design, using an electronical questionnaire, administered through a marketing survey company for relative representativeness with respect to age and gender. Potential correlates of problem gambling we

Sleepiness and impulsivity: Findings in non-treatment seeking young adults.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Although inadequate sleep has been linked to problematic behaviors, such as poor impulse control and emotion dysregulation, little research interest has been the role of sleep and sleep deprivation on impulsive behaviors in young adults. To further examine the relationship of sleepiness to impulsivity and impulsive behaviors, this study was designed to collect data on sleepiness, and a range of impulse control disorders and cognitive measures. METHODS: Young non-treatment-seeking adults were recruited from two US cities and completed a screening form for sleepiness, along

Psychotic depression with suicidality in the context of internet gaming disorder and chronic cannabis use.

A man in his 20s was admitted after a serious suicide attempt (hypnotic overdose) following months of severe depression and social withdrawal. In the preceding 2 weeks, after a 2-day forced break from gaming due to a brief, mild, self-limited illness during which COVID-19 testing was not performed and loss of in-game status, he developed derealisation and paranoid ideas that others were 'non-playable characters'. His history revealed compulsive online gaming (approximately 10 hours/day) and chronic cannabis use, and urine toxicology was positive for cannabis. He was treated with antipsychotics

A 2-year follow-up analysis of individuals with internet use disorders treated with the webcam-based telemedicine OMPRIS intervention.

Evidence-based online treatments for internet use disorders (IUD) are poorly studied. The online-based, therapist-guided, motivational intervention program for internet use disorder (OMPRIS) has shown significant effects on reducing IUD symptoms, while the symptoms remained high in the waiting control group. The current study presents a 2-year follow-up analysis of the IUD symptoms. Participants in the OMPRIS study were followed up 2 years after the intervention. The primary outcome was a reduction in IUD symptoms. Secondary outcomes were time spent on the internet, depression and anxiety symp

Examining the impact of ADHD, pharmacological treatment, and internet addiction on the parent-adolescent relationships quality.

INTRODUCTION: Parent-adolescent relationship quality is vital for youth's emotional and behavioral development; yet, it may be adversely impacted by neurodevelopmental disorders like attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). This study aimed to examine whether ADHD diagnosis and medication status are associated with differences in specific dimensions of parent-adolescent relationship quality - namely open communication, positive relationship quality, and negative relationship quality - while accounting for internet addiction as a contextual covariate. METHODS: A total of 155 adolescent

Association of self-reported dental caries with sex, lifestyle, and problematic Internet use among elementary school children in Japan.

BACKGROUND: Dental caries is the most prevalent disease in elementary schoolchildren in Japan. Problematic Internet use (PIU) has increased among children; however, its association with caries has rarely been studied. We aimed to explore (1) sex differences in dental caries and (2) the association of dental caries with lifestyle and PIU among elementary school children in Japan. METHODS: From 110 elementary schools in Toyama Prefecture, 13,413 children in the 4th-6th grades (mean age, 10.5 years) participated in the Toyama Safe Internet Use Project in 2018. We inquired about lifestyle, anthro

Q-single: Linking functional impairment to problematic internet use through a single-question approach.

BACKGROUND: Short versions of problematic internet use (PIU) questionnaires may provide a convenient and effective way of assessing internet-related problems in various contexts, ranging from research to clinical practice. The aim of this study was to investigate whether single yes/no question (Q-single) regarding "functional impairment due to PIU" could serve as a screening tool to indicate the potential absence of PIU, given the lack of functional impairment. METHODS: Data from two online studies (N = 524 and N = 272) assessing internet-related behaviors among students were used for the ana

The impact of loneliness on depression among college students: the mediating role of problematic internet use and the moderating role of perceived social support.

BACKGROUND: Research on the relationship between these two phenomena has become a focal point in academia; however, the mechanisms through which loneliness affects depression in college students remain unclear. Our findings enhance our understanding of the complex interplay among loneliness, problematic internet use (PIU), and perceived social support in the mechanisms underlying depression in college students, and underscore the importance of addressing depression within interventions aimed at reducing loneliness. METHODS: The present study, using a sample of Chinese college students, investi
