[Mobbing Among Hospital Physicians].

OBJECTIVES: Bullying in the workplace is considered an interpersonal stress factor. Occupational stress and mental health among physicians is increasingly becoming the focus of public attention. The extent to which mobbing plays a role in this has hardly been investigated yet. The aim of this study is to provide data on the prevalence of bullying among hospital physicians in Germany and possible correlations with occupational stress and mental health. METHODS: Within the framework of two cross-sectional studies, 692 hospital physicians in the field of psychiatry/psychotherapy (P/PT) and 667 h

Development and Pilot Testing of an Internet-Based Self-Help Intervention for Depression for Indian Users.

There is a dearth of published research on uptake and utility of mental health apps in India, despite a rising global trend in the application of technology in the field of mental health. We describe the development and pilot testing of a self-help intervention for depression, PUSH-D (Practice and Use Self-Help for Depression) for urban Indians. This guided self-help app, with essential and optional zone sections, was developed to provide a comprehensive coverage of therapeutic strategies drawn from cognitive behavior therapy, interpersonal therapy, supportive psychotherapy, and positive psych

Intensive Short-Term Dynamic Psychotherapy for generalized anxiety disorder: A pilot effectiveness and process-outcome study.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the clinical- and cost-effectiveness of Intensive Short-Term Dynamic Psychotherapy (ISTDP) for generalized anxiety disorder (GAD). We further aimed to examine if a key clinical process within the ISTDP framework, termed the level of mobilization of unprocessed complex emotions (MUCE), was related to outcome. The sample consisted of 215 adult patients (60.9% female) with GAD and comorbid conditions treated in a tertiary mental health outpatient setting. The patients were provided an average of 8.3 sessions of ISTDP delivered by 38 therapists. The leve

Bipolar affective disorder and psychoeducation.

OBJECTIVE: Bipolar affective disorder runs a natural course of frequent relapses and recurrences. Despite significant strides in the pharmacological treatment of bipolar disorder, most bipolar patients cannot be treated only by drugs. The limitations of using medication alone in symptomatic, relapse prevention, and satisfaction/quality of life terms have long prompted interest in wider forms of management. One of the promising way how to enhance remission seems to be combination of pharmacotherapy and psychoeducation. METHODS: Studies were identified through PUBMED, Web of Science and Scopus

Facilitators and Inhibitors of Healthy Sexuality Across the Life Course: A Qualitative Study of Sexual Trajectories, Reflection, and Agency.

Healthy sexuality has recently been proposed as a broader developmental framework that complements conventional concepts of sexual health. However, little empirical research has examined how healthy sexuality develops across the life course through lived experience. This study explores healthy sexuality by identifying facilitators and inhibitors of healthy sexuality and sexual satisfaction and by examining how they accumulate within individuals' sexual trajectories. Twenty semi-structured life-history interviews were conducted with participants aged 28-32 years in Slovakia. Data were analyzed

Interventions to help adults with concussion return to work: A systematic review.

OBJECTIVE: Clinicians require guidance to aid patients who are attempting to return to work (RTW) after concussion. This systematic review synthesizes the results of interventions to determine what types of interventions (ie, early education and intervention, psychological, rehabilitative, and interdisciplinary) are effective, what behavior change techniques (BCTs) are most frequently used, and which BCTs are most promising. LITERATURE SURVEY: MEDLINE ALL, PsycINFO, and CINAHL databases were searched for literature published January 2000 to the end of December 2023. METHODOLOGY: Peer-reviewe

Suicide attempts in chronically depressed individuals: What are the risk factors?

Chronically depressed individuals have a high suicide risk. However, it is an open question whether previously observed risk factors for suicide attempts also apply to chronic depression or whether there are specific risk factors related to chronic-recurrent illness. We drew from a large group of chronically depressed individuals seeking psychotherapy to investigate demographic and psychological factors related to previous suicide attempts. Participants took part in the SCID and filled out established questionnaires. Among 368 chronically depressed individuals (68.7% women; Mage = 40.95 years)

Impact of Age and Race on Outcomes of a Program to Prevent Excess Weight Gain and Disordered Eating in Adolescent Girls.

Interpersonal psychotherapy (IPT) prevents weight gain and reduces loss-of-control (LOC)-eating in adults. However, IPT was not superior to health-education (HE) for preventing excess weight gain and reducing LOC-eating over 1-year in adolescent girls at risk for excess weight gain and eating disorders. Limited data suggest that older and non-White youth may be especially responsive to IPT. In secondary analyses, we examined if age or race moderated weight and LOC-eating outcomes. The 113 participants (12-17 years; 56.6% White) from the original trial were re-contacted 3 years later for assess…

Exploring corrective experiences in a successful case of short-term dynamic psychotherapy.

The concept of corrective emotional experience, originally formulated by psychoanalysts Alexander and French (1946), has been redefined by contemporary researchers to be theoretically nonspecific, that is, as "coming to understand or experience an event or relationship in a different or unexpected way" (Castonguay & Hill, 2011). Using postsession questionnaires, videotapes, and posttermination interviews, we explored whether (and how) a corrective experience occurred in a successful case of short-term dynamic psychotherapy (STDP; Davanloo, 1980). A 35-year-old woman suffering severe panic atta

Perceived criticism predicts outcome of psychotherapy for panic disorder: Replication and extension.

OBJECTIVE: We tested the relation of perceived criticism (PC) from a parent or spouse/romantic partner to outcome of psychotherapy for panic disorder (PD). METHOD: Participants were 130 patients with PD (79% with agoraphobia) who received 24 twice-weekly sessions of panic-focused psychodynamic psychotherapy, cognitive-behavioral therapy, or applied relaxation therapy. Patients were predominantly White (75%), female (64%), and non-Hispanic (85%). At baseline, Week 5 of treatment, termination, and at 6- and 12-month follow-up, patients rated PC from the relative with whom they lived. Independen

The inclusion of siblings in social skills training groups for boys with Asperger syndrome.

This pilot investigation evaluated the effectiveness of siblings as generalisation agents in an 8-week social skills training (SST) program designed for boys with Asperger syndrome (AS). Twenty-one boys aged 8-12 participated in a SST group alone, with a sibling, or remained in a wait-list control group. After training, participants' identification of non-verbal social cues significantly improved and was maintained at 3-month follow-up, irrespective of sibling involvement. Similar trends existed for participants' ability to accurately interpret emotions relative to controls. Improvements did n

Social support as a predictor of response to group therapy for complicated grief.

This study investigated the effect of perceived social support on the outcome of group therapy for patients who experienced complicated grief following a variety of death losses. One hundred and seven psychiatric outpatients, who received either interpretive or supportive group therapy, rated their perceptions of social support from three sources (family, friends, and a special person) prior to treatment onset. For patients in both forms of therapy, perceived social support from friends was directly associated with favorable treatment outcome. In contrast, perceived social support from family

Do broken relationships in childhood relate to bulimic women breaking off psychotherapy in adulthood?

OBJECTIVE/METHOD: The case notes of 111 women presenting consecutively to an outpatient eating disorders clinic with bulimia nervosa or atypical bulimia nervosa were reviewed for pretreatment factors that predicted dropout in a retrospective study. Dropping out was conceptualized as not just a patient characteristic but as a transaction between patient and therapist. Factors believed to influence this transaction included experiences of childhood trauma, severity of eating disorder characteristics and comorbid psychiatric symptoms, demographic characteristics, waiting times for assessment and

Group therapy with gender-identity patients--a four-year study.

Group psychotherapy has proven to be an ideal setting for treatment, observation, and evaluation of gender-dysphoric patients prior to, during, and after sex reassignment surgery. Forty-three percent of the patients seen in the Case Western Reserve University group-therapy program elected nonsurgical solutions. The types of changes and adaptations observed in the 28 group-therapy patients are divided into four categories and discussed.

Impact of childhood trauma on the outcomes of a perinatal depression trial.

BACKGROUND: Childhood abuse and neglect have been linked with increased risks of adverse mental health outcomes in adulthood and may moderate or predict response to depression treatment. In a small randomized controlled trial treating depression in a diverse sample of nontreatment-seeking, pregnant, low-income women, we hypothesized that childhood trauma exposure would moderate changes in symptoms and functioning over time for women assigned to usual care (UC), but not to brief interpersonal psychotherapy (IPT-B) followed by maintenance IPT. Second, we predicted that trauma exposure would be n…

Language style matching and treatment outcome in anorexia nervosa.

OBJECTIVE: Psychotherapy is the treatment of choice for anorexia nervosa (AN) but mechanisms of action are still largely unknown. Growing research suggests that synchrony between patient and therapist contributes to treatment success. Adding to this literature, this study examined the association between language style matching (LSM) among patient and therapist as an indicator of interpersonal (verbal) synchrony and treatment outcome in AN. METHOD: Audio recordings of mid-treatment therapy sessions (n = 25) in a multi-centre randomized controlled trial on the Maudsley Model of Anorexia Nervos
