Relational treatment strategies increase social approach behaviors in patients with Generalized Social Anxiety Disorder.

We incorporated strategies based on relational and interpersonal circumplex research within a standard cognitive-behavioral regimen for Generalized Social Anxiety Disorder (GSAD, Generalized Social Phobia) to determine whether these techniques increased the social approach behaviors that facilitate relationship development. Individuals seeking treatment for GSAD were randomly assigned to either the integrated interpersonal cognitive-behavioral group treatment (ICBT) or a wait list condition (WL). Results revealed that the interpersonal techniques were readily implemented by the majority of pat

Understanding the dynamics: nexus between servant leadership, symbiotic diversity, identity related process and personnel behaviors.

BACKGROUND: Based on the social exchange theory, this study examines how servant leadership influences the nursing staff's job-related outcomes by fostering perceived member status and interpersonal coordination. Precisely, the study investigates the mediating mechanism of perceived member status and interpersonal coordination in the relationship between servant leadership and job-related outcomes, i.e., job execution, psychological safety, and institutional identification. The study further explores the moderating role of a symbiotic diversity setting (SDS) between servant leadership, perceiv

From bench to bedside: Examining the interpersonal and affective context of borderline personality disorder as it unfolds over time in psychotherapy.

Wright et al. (2022) argued that the core of personality disorder (PD) is interpersonal in nature; thus, reconceptualizing PD as interpersonal disorders allows more focused assessment, formulation, and treatment planning. Previous research has examined the interpersonal and affective processes relevant to borderline PD (BPD), yet no study to date has investigated how these dynamics may shift in response to psychodynamic psychotherapy. We present preliminary data examining the interpersonal and affective context of BPD over time in an evidence-based treatment. Forty-five patients diagnosed with

Interpersonal Problems as Mediators of the Association Between Personality Disorders and Mental Health.

Impairments in interpersonal functioning are a core transdiagnostic feature of personality disorders (PDs). While interpersonal problems are known to worsen clinical outcomes, their mediating role between PDs and mental health requires further empirical examination. The study aims were: (1) to analyse gender differences in PDs, mental health and interpersonal problems; (2) to study the correlations between study variables; and (3) to examine the mediating role of interpersonal problems in the relationship between PDs and global mental health. The final sample comprised 291 participants (Mage =

Mediation role of interpersonal problems between insecure attachment and eating disorder psychopathology.

PURPOSE: Although insecure attachment and interpersonal problems have been acknowledged as risk and maintaining factors of eating disorders (EDs), the mediating role of interpersonal problems between attachment style and ED psychopathology has been poorly explored. The purpose of this study was to investigate the mediating role of interpersonal problems between insecure attachment and ED psychopathology. METHODS: One-hundred-nine women with anorexia nervosa and 157 women with bulimia nervosa filled in the Eating Disorder Inventory-2 (EDI-2) and the Experiences in Close Relationships (ECR) rev

Interpersonal Trauma Effects on Adolescent Depression: The Moderating Role of Neurophysiological Responses to Positive Interpersonal Images.

Trauma exposure is associated with a heightened risk for depression and such risk is thought to vary based on the type of traumatic events (e.g., interpersonal, including abuse and domestic violence, or non-interpersonal, including accidents or natural disasters). Depression is often accompanied by altered emotional reactivity, and the late positive potential (LPP) serves as a reliable neurophysiological measure of sustained attention towards emotional stimuli, raising questions regarding the role of the LPP in moderating trauma effects on depression. We conducted a cross-sectional study of 20

Interpersonal trauma moderates the relationship between personality factors and suicidality of individuals with posttraumatic stress disorder.

Individuals with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) are more prone to suicidal ideation and behavior. While those who have experienced interpersonal trauma exhibit more suicidality than those who have experienced non-interpersonal trauma, it is unclear how the traumatic effects are related to an individual's personality characteristics. This study examined the association between interpersonal trauma and personality factors with suicidality, and elucidated the moderating role of interpersonal trauma in individuals with PTSD. The study included 6,022 participants from the Korean Epidemiologic

Interpersonal problem areas and onset of panic disorder.

BACKGROUND: Numerous studies indicate that stressful life events are key precipitants of psychological disturbances. Severe stress often precedes the onset or exacerbation of illness in vulnerable individuals and may be of primary importance in the genesis of some mental disorders. Several authors have suggested that major life events play a role in the development of panic-related symptoms. The aim of this study was to examine the presence of stressful life events, in particular events focused in the interpersonal psychotherapy problem areas (grief, role disputes, role transitions, interperso

Social anxiety disorder and avoidant personality disorder from an interpersonal perspective.

OBJECTIVES: The general objective of this article is to study the unclear and overlapping relationship between social anxiety disorder (SAD) and avoidant personality disorder (AvPD) from an interpersonal perspective. The first specific objective is to compare the disorders with regard to interpersonal problems and general symptom distress. The second specific objective is to examine interpersonal subgroups and pathoplasticity. DESIGN: In a cross-sectional design, patients from an outpatient psychotherapy clinic diagnosed with social anxiety disorder (SAD, n = 299), avoidant personality disord

Interpersonal problems as a predictor of treatment outcome in adult depression: An individual participant data meta-analysis.

OBJECTIVES: Interpersonal problems are a fundamental feature of depression, but study-level meta-analyses of their association with treatment outcome have been limited by heterogeneity in primary studies' analyses and reported results. We conducted a pre-registered individual participant data meta-analysis (IPD-MA) to examine this relationship for adult depression. This meta-analytic strategy can reduce variability by standardizing data analysis across primary studies. METHODS: We included studies examining the efficacy of five treatments for adult depression and assessing interpersonal probl

The development of a novel scale to assess intra- and interpersonal emotion regulation strategies: The Emotion Regulation Strategy Scale (ERSS).

Existing emotion regulation research focuses on how individuals use different strategies to manage their own emotions-also called intra-personal emotion regulation. However, people often leverage connections with others to regulate their own emotions-interpersonal emotion regulation. The goal of the present studies was to develop a comprehensive and efficient scale-the Emotion Regulation Strategies Scale (ERSS)-to assess nine specific emotion regulation strategies that individuals use both intra-personally and interpersonally. These emotion regulation strategies were cognitive reappraisal, dis

When traits meet the moment: State and perceived partner motivations interact with approach-avoidance temperament to predict social preferences in daily life.

Social interactions are influenced by personality traits such as approach-avoidance motives. However, it remains unclear how traits, states, and interpersonal perceptions interact to shape everyday social experiences - and for whom their interactions are most consequential. Addressing this gap is critical for advancing personality-in-context models and identifying mechanisms underlying deficits in interpersonal functioning. A two-week Ecological Momentary Assessment was conducted with 136 participants (N = 3,991 social interactions), who reported on motivational states, partner perceptions, an

Impulsive adolescents exhibit inefficient processing and a low decision threshold when decoding facial expressions of emotions.

BACKGROUND: Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is a debilitating psychiatric illness whose symptoms frequently emerge during adolescence. Critically, self-injury and suicide attempts in BPD are often precipitated by interpersonal discord. Initial studies in adults suggest that the interpersonal difficulties common in BPD may emerge from disrupted processing of socioemotional stimuli. Less is known about these processes in adolescents with BPD symptoms, despite substantial changes in socioemotional processing during this developmental period. METHODS: Eighty-six adolescents and young adults

Interpersonal difficulties mediate the relationship between child sexual abuse and depression symptoms.

This study examined the influence of interpersonal functioning as a mediator in the relationship between child sexual abuse and depression symptoms, after accounting for the influence of child physical abuse. The research questions build on the existing knowledge base by examining mechanisms of adult adjustment among child sexual abuse survivors. In the current study, 2,892 young adult women (18-29 years old; M = 19.06) reported on child sexual and physical abuse, 5 domains of interpersonal functioning, and depression symptoms. The results supported aggression, sensitivity, ambivalence, and la

Life Satisfaction Domains Among Older Adults: Patterns by Age, Gender, and Living Arrangement.

This study examined age-related differences in total and domain-specific life satisfaction among older adults, stratified by gender and living arrangement. Cross-sectional data from 13,488 adults aged ≥65 years were analyzed across five domains: health, community environment, interpersonal relationships, society, and social roles. Using T-scores based on the 65-69 group, linear regression assessed associations between age and life satisfaction. Among men living with others, older age was linked to higher total life satisfaction and greater satisfaction with interpersonal relationships and soci

Interpersonal Distance Preferences in Deaf Signers and Hearing Individuals.

Interpersonal distance plays a critical role in communication and social interactions. Here we investigated whether deaf individuals that use sign language differ from hearing (non-signer) individuals in their preferred interpersonal distance. Specifically, we asked a group of deaf participants (all signers) and control hearing participants to report their preferred social distance from a stranger using a computer-presented stop-distance paradigm. Results show that deaf participants prefer larger interpersonal distances than hearing individuals. We suggest that preference for a larger interper

Behavioural Compromise and the Dynamics of Love.

This article extends the classical Romeo-Juliet framework by incor-porating an endogenous process of behavioural adjustment into the dynamics of interpersonal relationships. Individuals are assumed to continuously adjust their behaviour by choosing a compromise that balances alignment with a partner against the cost of deviation from personal preferences. This leads to a system in which emotional states and behavioural choices co-evolve over time. The resulting dynamics are nonlinear, reflecting state-dependent tolerance, mismatch costs, and feedback from behaviour to emotion. Numerical illust
