Identification and evaluation of probiotic potential of Bifidobacterium breve AHC3 isolated from chicken intestines and its effect on necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) in newborn SD rats.

Necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) is a severe intestinal disease of the newborn infants, associated with high morbidity and mortality. It has been reported that Bifidobacterium could protect the intestinal barrier function and reduce the risk of NEC. This study aimed to evaluate the probiotic potential of Bifidobacterium strains isolated from the chicken intestines and its effect on necrotizing enterocolitis in newborn SD rats. Out of 32 isolates, B. breve AHC3 not only exhibited excellent probiotic potential, including tolerance to artificial simulated gastric conditions, adhesion to HT-29 cell…

Dietary protein restriction during pregnancy and/or early weaning reduces the number of goblet cells in the small and large intestines of female mice pups.

BACKGROUND: It remains unclear whether goblet cell numbers in offspring are altered by maternal nutritional status and/or early weaning. Herein, using a murine model, we clarified whether a low-protein (LP) diet during pregnancy and/or early weaning changes villus structures, goblet cell numbers, mucin intensity, and mucin mRNA expression in the mucosal layer throughout the intestines in mice offspring. METHODS: We examined villus-crypt structures and goblet cell numbers using hematoxylin-eosin staining. By performing alcian blue-PAS staining and RT-qPCR, we investigated mucin intensity in th…

Vibrio cholerae VC1741 (PsrA) enhances the colonization of the pathogen in infant mice intestines in the presence of the long-chain fatty acid, oleic acid.

Vibrio cholerae is a natural inhabitant of aquatic environments and causes the epidemic diarrheal disease known as cholera. Fatty acid metabolism is closely related to the pathogenicity of V. cholerae. The TetR family transcriptional repressor PsrA regulates the β-oxidation pathway in Pseudomonas aeruginosa; however, little is known about its regulation in V. cholerae. In this study, qRT-PCR revealed that the expression of vc1741 (psrA) increased 40-fold in the small intestines of infant mice compared with that grown in LB medium. The Δvc1741 mutant showed a significant defected in the ability…

Echinococcus multilocularis detection in the intestines and feces of free-ranging domestic cats (Felis s. catus) and European wildcats (Felis s. silvestris) from northeastern France.

Experimental studies have demonstrated that cats can be infected by Echinococcus multilocularis, although few data are available concerning their natural infection. This study was designed to compare experimental findings with information on the prevalence of natural E. multilocularis infections of cats in a rural high endemic area. Of 19 intestines of domestic cats (Felis s. catus) and five of European wildcats (Felis s. silvestris) analyzed by segmental sedimentation and counting technique (SSCT), infection by E. multilocularis was observed for one individual of each species, resulting in a …

Studies on the histogenesis of the tunica mucosa of the small and large intestines of the camel (Camelus dromedarius). II. Histogenesis of the colonic mucosa.

The colon is at first a simple tube, and its mucosa has a smooth luminal surface, surrounding a previous lumen. At the 150 mm stage the mucosa is thrown into a number of stout projections, each has a vascularized mesenchymal core and an epithelial cloth. These projections are in turn split into finger-like villi by transverse furrows. The villi reach their maximal length at the 260 mm stage and then gradually degenerate and slough into the lumen. The villi were completely disappeared at the 730 mm stage. The colonic glands were firstly observed at the 200 mm stage as downgrowths of the intervi

Production of adenocarcinomas of the small intestines of Wistar rats fed panfuran-S containing 3-di(hydroxymethyl)amino-6-(5-nitro-2-furylethenyl)-1,2,4-triazine.

Panfuran-S in the diet produced a high incidence of invasive and metastatic adenocarcinomas of the duodenum and the jejunum in outbred Wistar rats. Depressed growth and incidence of cancer production were dose-dependent. Adenocarcinomas of the duodenum were present in 2 of 18 (11%) rats that received 1,750 ppm 3-di(hydroxymethyl)amino-6-(5-nitro-2-furylethenyl)-1,2,4-triazine (DHNT) in the diet and in 11 of 19 (58%) rats that received 3,500 ppm DHNT. Adenocarcinomas of the jejunum were present in 10 of 18 (56%) and 16 of 19 (84%) rats that received 1,750 and 3,500 ppm DHNT, respectively, for 3

Characterization of the intestinal microorganism in patients with congenital intestinal atresia: the preliminary exploration for establishment and influence of initial intestinal flora in newborns.

PURPOSE: This study aimed to analyze the differences in microbial composition between the proximal and distal intestinal segments of newborns with intestinal atresia, speculating about the mechanism underlying the initial establishment of neonatal intestinal flora. Additionally, differential metabolic pathways were explored to predict their potential effects on gravidas and fetuses. METHODS: The microbial characteristics of intestinal flora were assessed using 16SrRNA sequencing. The alpha and beta-diversity indices were calculated to compare the microbial composition among three groups. Prin

Segmental intestinal preservation and enteral nutrition help to maintain the intestinal function after a massive intestinal resection: report of a case.

We report a case in which both segmental intestinal preservation and enteral nutrition helped to maintain the intestinal function after a massive bowel resection for superior mesenteric artery (SMA) thrombosis. A 53-year-old Japanese man was admitted to our hospital with acute abdomen. Extensive necrosis of the small intestine was found during the operation; however, a loop of the ileum appeared to be viable. A massive resection of the small intestine which preserved a 50-cm length of the viable ileum loop was thus performed. However, diffuse stenosis of the remaining ileum was found after sur

Correlations between Low Doses of Zearalenone, Its Carryover Factor and Estrogen Receptor Expression in Different Segments of the Intestines in Pre-Pubertal Gilts-A Study Protocol.

Plant materials can be contaminated with Fusarium mycotoxins and their derivatives, whose toxic effects on humans and animals may remain subclinical. Zearalenone (ZEN), a low-molecular-weight compound, is produced by molds in crop plants as a secondary metabolite. The objective of this study will be to analyze the in vivo correlations between very low monotonic doses of ZEN (5, 10, and 15 μg ZEN/kg body weight-BW for 42 days) and the carryover of this mycotoxin and its selected metabolites from the intestinal contents to the intestinal walls, the mRNA expression of estrogen receptor alfa (ERα)

An intestine-centric view of neurodegeneration: How intestine-derived signals mediate the intestine-brain axis to impact Alzheimer's disease.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) has emerged as an increasingly prevalent and burdensome public health challenge with global aging, underscoring the urgent need to clarify the key factors involved in its pathogenesis for effective prevention and management. Mounting evidence suggests that disrupted crosstalk between the intestine and brain may contribute to aging-related neurodegeneration, including AD. Acting as a peripheral modulatory hub of the intestine-brain axis, the intestine releases a variety of bioactive substances that regulate brain function. This narrative review synthesizes current evide

Investigating intestinal farnesoid X receptor functions at the intestinal mucosal barrier and in the intestinal microbiota in a biliary obstruction mouse model.

Intestinal barrier dysfunction and dysbiosis are critical intestinal alterations in biliary obstructive diseases, for which farnesoid X receptor (FXR) is a potential intestinal therapeutic target, but its role and mechanism in the intestinal tract remain poorly defined. Using gut-specific knockout mice, we demonstrate that intestinal Fxr deficiency caused intestinal barrier function impairment and dysbiosis, and in a biliary obstruction model, obeticholic acid (OCA)-dependent intestinal Fxr activation protected against intestinal barrier injury and dysbiosis after bile duct ligation (BDL) surg

Small intestinal bacterial overgrowth and intestinal methanogen overgrowth in gastrointestinal malignancies.

Small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO) is defined by an abnormal proliferation of colon-specific bacteria in the small intestine, whereas intestinal methanogen overgrowth (IMO) manifests with an increase of methane-producing archaea, specifically Methanobrevibacter smithii. Both conditions can disrupt gastrointestinal motility and manifest with various clinical symptoms. Small intestinal bacterial overgrowth appears to increase the risk of malnutrition and negatively affect malabsorption of essential nutrients such as vitamin B12 and fat-soluble vitamins. This concern is particularly rel

Two Cases of Small Intestinal Follicular Lymphoma Presenting with Intestinal Stricture.

INTRODUCTION: Primary gastrointestinal follicular lymphoma (FL) rarely causes intestinal stricture. We report two cases of small intestinal FL presenting with stricture. CASE PRESENTATION: Case 1: A 63-year-old man presented with small intestinal obstruction. CT demonstrated ileal wall thickening and enlarged lymph nodes. Partial ileal resection confirmed primary ileal FL, immunohistochemically positive for CD10, CD20, and BCL-2. Case 2: A 79-year-old woman with a 7-year history of jejunal strictures underwent right hemicolectomy for ascending colon cancer and partial jejunal resection. Patho

A long journey to the colon: The role of the small intestine microbiota in intestinal disease.

The small intestine represents a complex and understudied gut niche with significant implications for human health. Indeed, many infectious and non-infectious diseases center within the small intestine and present similar clinical manifestations to large intestinal disease, complicating non-invasive diagnosis and treatment. One major neglected aspect of small intestinal diseases is the feedback relationship with the resident collection of commensal organisms, the gut microbiota. Studies focused on microbiota-host interactions in the small intestine in the context of infectious and non-infectio

Delving the depths of 'terra incognita' in the human intestine - the small intestinal microbiota.

The small intestinal microbiota has a crucial role in gastrointestinal health, affecting digestion, immune function, bile acid homeostasis and nutrient metabolism. The challenges of accessibility at this site mean that our knowledge of the small intestinal microbiota is less developed than of the colonic or faecal microbiota. Here, we summarize the features and fluctuations of the microbiota along the small intestinal tract, focusing on humans, and discuss physicochemical factors and assessment methods, including the technical challenges of investigating the low microbial biomass of the proxim
