Iridodialysis, occurring as a consequence of contusion injury of the eye ball, may initiate certain subjective disturbances (monocular diplopia, esthetic defect) indicating surgery in such cases. There is no uniform opinion as to the time of surgery. The time ranges from two weeks to one year after injury. The surgical technique is a standard one consisting of chamber opening with a corneal-sclerar incision at the site of iridodialysis. This report details the case of an 11-year-old white male with a typical presentation of a unilateral iris and chorioretinal coloboma associated with multisystem disorders. The results of routine clinical and noninvasive neurophysiological tests are presented to demonstrate the anatomical and functional correlates of this striking and infrequently encountered ocular defect.

The accumulation and efflux of [14C]ascorbic acid by the rabbit iris-ciliary body were examined in vitro. Accumulation of labelled ascorbate was observed to be reduced significantly by ouabain(10(-4) M), low sodium solutions, 0 degree C and dinitrophenol (10(-3) M). We investigated the effect of pilocarpine on the bovine iris sphincter. This muscle contracted in a dose-dependent manner from 2 x 10(-6) M, with a maximal response at 3 x 10(-3) M. Iris hamartomas (Lisch nodules), previously reported in cases of peripheral neurofibromatosis, were found in a 14-year-old girl with segmental neurofibromatosis. Isolated rabbit iris--ciliary body preparations were found to accumulate 3H-pyridoxine by a mechanism that was time- and temperature-dependent, saturable in part, but not altered by omission of oxygen or specific ions. A description is given of a pair of iris retractors which avoid certain shortcomings of other instruments or of other methods of retracting the iris in connection with cryo-extraction, particularly in case where the pupil cannot be dilated or only insufficiently. This pair of iris retractors has proved useful. In addition, information is given about our own technique to achieve a round functional pupil, after complicated lens-extractions with vitreous prolapse, by peripheral iridotomy parallel to the limbus and discission of the body.
