Contribution of haemolysis to jaundice in Sephardic Jewish glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficient neonates.

We determined the contribution of haemolysis to the development of hyperbilirubinaemia in glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G-6-PD) deficient neonates and G-6-PD normal controls. Blood carboxyhaemoglobin (COHb), sampled on the third day of life, was measured by gas chromatography, corrected for inhaled carbon monoxide (COHbC), and expressed as a percentage of total haemoglobin concentration (Hb). Serum bilirubin was tested as clinically necessary. 37 non-jaundiced (peak serum total bilirubin (PSTB) < or = 255 mumol/l) and 20 jaundiced (PSTB > or = 257 mumol/l) G-6-PD-deficient neonates were c

Laterality of onset in idiopathic torsion dystonia.

Idiopathic torsion dystonia (ITD) is a dominantly inherited disorder with incomplete penetrance. It is important to identify factors that may cause dystonia or prevent its occurrence in a genetically predisposed individual. Because dystonia may be precipitated by peripheral triggers, we have investigated whether the preferential use of a limb affects the development of dystonia. Analysis of the correlation between the side of motor dominance and the limbs in which dystonic symptoms first appeared was performed in 49 patients with ITD ascertained in a country-wide survey in Israel. The dominant

Different mutations in Ashkenazi Jewish and non-Jewish French Canadians with Tay-Sachs disease.

Tay-Sachs disease patients of Ashkenazi Jewish and non-Jewish French Canadian origin are affected with a clinically identical form of this inherited disease. Both have a similar gene frequency for the disorder, which is tenfold higher than that found in the general population. Unlike other patients with the disease, who often display variation at the clinical or biochemical level, the absence of such differences between these two groups has prompted the idea that they may harbor the same mutation. In this report, a complementary DNA clone coding for the alpha chain of human beta-hexosaminidase

[Demyelinating diseases in the southern regions of Uzbekistan].

Examination of the clinical archives for 1931-1980, epidemiological survey of the Samarkand and Kashka-Darya regions as well as clinical examination of 49 patients showed disseminated sclerosis to occur more rarely among the aboriginal population (26,8%) than among newcomers (73,2%). General morbidity was 1.7: 100.000 population; this made it possible to attribute the region under study to a low risk zone. The debut, clinical picture and clinical course of disseminated sclerosis in three groups of patients (aboriginal population, persons born in other Uzbekistan regions and newcomers) were sim

Henry Meige: The man and his understanding of dystonia, at the turn of the 19th to 20th century.

BACKGROUND: Henry Meige (1866-1940), a French neurologist, the pupil of Charcot, is remembered for the eponym, the Meige syndrome, describing the clinical picture of craniocervical dystonia. This historical review highlights the controversies from his essay on "Le Juif Errant" (the Wandering Jew), and the evolution of his understanding of the movement disorders of the face and neck at the time of the encephalitis lethargica. RESULTS: His thesis reported 5 patients from Eastern Europe, presenting with functional neurological disorders following traumatic life experiences. He wrote with Feindel

An Updated View on the Molecular Pathomechanisms of Human Dihydrolipoamide Dehydrogenase Deficiency in Light of Novel Crystallographic Evidence.

Dihydrolipoamide dehydrogenase (LADH, E3) deficiency is a rare (autosomal, recessive) genetic disorder generally presenting with an onset in the neonatal age and early death; the highest carrier rate has been found among Ashkenazi Jews. Acute clinical episodes usually involve severe metabolic decompensation and lactate acidosis that result in neurological, cardiological, and/or hepatological manifestations. Clinical severity is due to the fact that LADH is a common E3 subunit to the alpha-ketoglutarate, pyruvate, alpha-ketoadipate, and branched-chain alpha-keto acid dehydrogenase complexes, an…

Type 1 Diabetes in Autoimmune Polyendocrinopathy-Candidiasis-Ectodermal Dystrophy Syndrome (APECED): A "Rare" Manifestation in a "Rare" Disease.

Type 1 autoimmune polyglandular syndrome (APS1) is a rare autosomal recessive disease, caused by mutations in the autoimmune regulator gene … ome (APECED) cohorts of patients are also detected in continental Italy and Sardinia, among Iranian Jews, as well as in other countries. The syndrome is diagnosed when patients present at least two out of the three fundamental disorders including chronic mucocutaneous candidiasis, hypoparathyroidism, and Addison's disease. Among the associated conditio …

Extensive thrombosis in a patient with familial Mediterranean fever, despite hyperimmunoglobulin D state in serum. [corrected].

Familial Mediterranean fever (FMF) is an autosomal recessive disease characterized by recurrent episodes of fever accompanied by peritonitis, pleuritis, arthritis, or erysipelas-like erythema. It is known to occur mainly among Mediterranean and Middle Eastern populations such as non-Ashkenazi Jews, Arabs, Turks, and Armenians. FMF is not familiar to clinicians beyond this area and diagnosing FMF can be challenging. We report a 22-yr old boy who presented with fever, arthalgia and abdominal pain. He had a history of recurrent episodes of fever associated with arthalgia which would subside spont…

Jakub Penson and his studies on acute renal failure during typhus epidemics in Warsaw Ghetto.

In the Warsaw Ghetto established by the German Nazis as a special district for Polish Jews in 1940 there were two typhus epidemics. Many patients affected by this disease (1500 during the first and 6500 during second epidemic) were treated at The Department of Infectious Disease of Czyste Hospital headed by Dr Jakub Penson--a Polish physician of Jewish origin. A heroic group of 20 physicians not only treated patients in these tragic circumstances, but also performed in defiance of Nazi prohibition, scientific studies on the clinical course of typhus with special attention on hyperazotemia and …

[Hannover and Ibsen: two Danish anatomists in the middle of the 19th century. Were they enemies?].

Adolph Hannover (1814-94), Danish anatomist and pathologist, introduced the microscopy to the medical research in Denmark. He published several papers on anatomy and pathology, among others Om Mikroskopets Bygning og dets Brug (1847) which was translated to several European languages, among others to English On the structure of the microscope and its use. As a jew he never succeeded in obtaining a post at the University of Copenhagen, Ib Pedersen Ibsen (1801-62) was educated at the Academia Chirurgorium Regia, the college of surgeons in Copenhagen, and he never became a scholarly anatomist, wr

Public health aspects of breast cancer gene testing in Canada. Part 1: risks and interventions.

The risks (penetrance) of breast and ovarian cancer in carriers of the BRCA1 or BRCA2 genes are high, but it is likely that estimates based on selected large multicase families are inflated by selection bias. Estimates based on a population survey of Ashkenazi Jews are lower, but other population-based estimates are still not available. The proportion of breast or ovarian cancers related to the genes is similarly lower in population-based samples than in referred selected families, and, even for subjects with cancer onset at young ages or with a family history, it is quite small. Other genes w…

A single-base deletion in the 3'-coding region of glycogen-debranching enzyme is prevalent in glycogen storage disease type IIIA in a population of North African Jewish patients.

Glycogen storage disease type III (GSD III) is an autosomal recessive disease caused by the deficiency of glycogen-debranching enzyme (AGL). The overall incidence of the disease is about 1:100,000 life births in the USA; however, it is unusually frequent among North African Jews in Israel (prevalence 1:5,400, carrier prevalence 1:35). All North African Jewish GSD III patients examined have both liver and muscle involvement. While all patients showed the characteristic features related to the liver enzyme deficiency, the peripheral muscular impairment varied from minimal to severe, with neuromu…
