Microbial aetiology and diagnostic criteria of postpartum endometritis in Nairobi, Kenya.

Using a protected triple lumen device, Neisseria gonorrhoeae or Chlamydia trachomatis, or both, were isolated from the endometriums of five out of 35 women with clinical postpartum endometritis compared with none of a control group of 30 puerperal women without endometritis (p less than 0.05) in Nairobi, Kenya. These sexually transmitted agents were also found in 12 cervical specimens from women with and three without postpartum endometritis (p = 0.04). Mycoplasma hominis and Ureaplasma urealyticum were equally isolated from the endometrium in both groups. Histology showed plasma cell infiltra…

Prostitutes are a major reservoir of sexually transmitted diseases in Nairobi, Kenya.

Prostitutes are a major reservoir of sexually transmitted diseases in many developing nations. In Nairobi we found that 16%, 28%, and 46%, respectively, of upper-, middle-, and lower-social strata prostitutes were infected with Neisseria gonorrhoeae. Genital ulcers and infections with Haemophilus ducreyi were more prevalent among prostitutes of the middle and lower social strata. A group of 97 prostitutes of the lower social strata were followed longitudinally to determine the rate of reinfection with N. gonorrhoeae. The mean time to acquisition of a new infection was 12.0 +/- 9.2 days. These

A quantification of the risk of trypanosomiasis infection to cattle on the south Kenya coast.

The number of trypanosome-infected bites received by cattle grazed around an 8 ha area of forest harbouring a semi-isolated population of Glossina pallidipes Austen was estimated. The absolute size of the tsetse population was determined by mark-release-recapture techniques, the tsetse host range by the identification of blood-meals, and trypanosome infection rates by dissection of samples of tsetse. Feeding frequency was estimated and the number of cattle present was known. It was estimated that each cow received, from G. pallidipes, one infective inoculum of T. congolense every 5.8 days duri

Morbidity in urinary schistosomiasis in relation to the intensity of infection in Kisumu, Kenya.

A study of the morbidity due to schistosomiasis haematobium was undertaken in 121 children ranging in age from 5 to 19 years, from Kanyamedha Primary School, Kisumu. Of this sample 81% of the males and 42% of the females had Schistosoma haematobium. Proteinuria was detected in 23% of the uninfected children; 54% of those with light infection; 80% of those with moderate infection and 94% of those with heavy infection. Similarly, haematuria was detected in 18% of the apparently uninfected individuals, 64% of those lightly infected, and 76% and 94% of those with moderate and heavy infections, res

Intestinal parasitic infections of men in four regions of rural Kenya.

Faecal samples were obtained from 906 men living in four different regions of rural Kenya: the cool Highlands, the humid coastal lowlands, the equatorial Lake Victoria basin and the arid marginal highlands. The prevalence of intestinal parasitic infections is reported and compared, contrasted and discussed in terms of the typical environmental conditions in each region. Almost 70% of men appeared to be infected with intestinal helminths; hookworm was most common. The regional prevalence of hookworm infections appeared to be related to relative humidity.

Anaemia and Schistosoma haematobium infection in the North-Eastern Province of Kenya.

The haemoglobin levels of 787 Somali people in north-eastern Kenya were measured. Severe anaemia was very common in both sexes of all ages. Possible causative factors are discussed. Adolescent boys had particularly low haemoglobin values (in one area 43% had levels below 8 g/dl) and this was related to Schistosoma haematobium infection. Such a clear relationshiop has not been shown before.

What is the potential impact of insecticide treated nets in a semi-arid region of northern Kenya? An investigation of vector populations prior to ITN roll-out in Turkana, Kenya.

The malaria ecology of northern Kenya differs from the rest of the country. Transmission is highly seasonal and intense, despite the arid environment and low population density. The region faces several threats to malaria control including identification of significant P. vivax infection and an emerging invasive species, An. stephensi. Turkana County implemented its first mass bednet distribution in late 2024. Prior to this, we established a surveillance program to understand mosquito density, vector diversity, host preference and contribution to malaria transmission. We captured mosquitoes in…

Self-reported, functional, and objective health and sociodemographic characteristics among older adults in Kenya: findings from the pilot longitudinal study of health and ageing in Kenya (LOSHAK).

BACKGROUND: By 2050, the global population of individuals aged 60 years and older is projected to reach two billion, with 80% residing in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). Africa's older population will triple from 74.4 million in 2020 to 235.1 million in 2050, the fastest growth rate globally. Kenya is slightly ahead of the curve on this trajectory, with the population of approximately 2.74 million of the older people expected to quadruple to 12 million over the same period. The Longitudinal Study of Health and Aging in Kenya (LOSHAK) is designed to advance research on population agin…

Occurrence of Dystocia among Free-Ranging Giraffes (Giraffa spp.) in Kenya.

Dystocia, a complication that occurs at parturition, either due to fetal or maternal factors, is uncommon in wild ungulate species because of natural selection against predisposed individuals. Among giraffes, reports of dystocia are rare in free-ranging populations across Africa. This study reviewed occurrence and type of dystocia, and outcome of obstetrical interventions, in giraffes in Kenya during 1991-2023 and considered possible risk factors. Only one case of dystocia in a semicaptive and one case in a captive northern (Rothschild's) Rothschild's giraffe (Giraffa camelopardalis) had been …

Mapping visceral leishmaniasis and examining environmental influences in Baringo County, Kenya.

Visceral leishmaniasis (VL) is a highly debilitating parasitic disease that primarily affects people living in poverty. In northern Baringo County, Kenya, VL contributes greatly to the overall burden of disease. The aim of this study was to identify hotspots of VL transmission and regional environmental associations in this area. Data was obtained from Chemolingot Sub-County Hospital's laboratory records and VL prevalence was assessed at the sub-location level. Monthly environmental covariates-mean, maximum, and minimum temperature, total precipitation, relative humidity, normalized difference…

Does Marriage Benefit Maternal Mental Health? New Evidence from Nairobi, Kenya.

It has long been known that marriage is a critical correlate of mental health, primarily through relationship quality and support from partner. However, in contexts where couples struggle to maintain a healthy relationship and marriage is an increasingly protracted process, the benefits of marriage for women's mental health are far from assured. In this analysis, we draw on survey and qualitative data from a longitudinal study in two low-income communities in Nairobi, Kenya, to unpack the complex relationships among the conditions of marriage, kinship support, and the risk of depression among …

Taxation of fisheries in Kenya: neither improving management nor raising revenue?

Fisheries have long been held to possess significant development potential across Africa, providing food security, livelihoods, and foreign exchange. Debates about their management have centred on the need to close access and on the role of devolution and co-management between central and local government. Because access restriction in practice requires licensing and levies, fisheries' fiscal treatment lies at the core of their sustainable management. Yet little attention has been given to whether such arrangements in low-income countries achieve either goal. This paper examines the Kenyan cas…

Visions of (Tuberculosis) Control: Medical Photographs in Mau Mau-Era Kenya.

The 1950s were a decade of remarkable advances in tuberculosis research globally, with Kenya emerging as a key site for developing new control and treatment regimens. Yet historical source material and consequently medical histories are largely silent on the context of anticolonial war in which this work took place. This article argues that disease control efforts in postwar Kenya must be examined in the context of the Mau Mau uprising and uses photographs to probe the intersection of politics and health. Examining photographs of late colonial TB control initiatives, it highlights the stark co…
