This article will describe the clinical and laboratory procedures used to treat a patient with implant retained crowns including Stage I indexing, fabrication of fixed provisional crowns to be inserted at the time the implants were uncovered (Stage II surgery), and the insertion of the definitive cement-retained crowns after the soft tissues had healed. All of the components described in this article were made by Implant Innovations, Inc., Palm Beach Gardens, FL. OBJECTIVE: To focus on diagnostic and therapeutic problems of pulmonary embolism in the elderly.
METHODS: Retrospective analysis of 5 years of clinical, instrumental, and laboratory data (collected at the time of hospital admission) for patients 65 years and older with pulmonary embolism proven by a high-probability scintigraphic lung scan or necropsy. With the purpose of describing the clinical and laboratory characteristics of cryptococcus meningoencephalitis, we reviewed the records of 104 patients admitted with this diagnosis at Couto Maia Hospital, reference for patients with infectious diseases in Salvador-BA Northeastern Brazil, from 1972 to 1996. INTRODUCTION: Fatal familial insomnia (FFI) is a hereditary disease caused by prions and characterized by mutations in the gene of the prion protein. Its clinical, neuropathological and biomolecular properties make this a distinctive and worrying disorder.

We describe a five-generation kindred with familial eosinophilia (FE; MIM131400), characterized by the occurrence of sustained eosinophilia of unidentifiable cause in multiple relatives. BACKGROUND: Increasingly, mutations of mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) are being considered when investigating the aetiology of neurological diseases in childhood. However, they are often difficult to predict clinically.
METHOD: Mitochondrial DNA analysis was carried out on 190 children from 1992 to 1996. Most patients were screened for large scale rearrangements and point mutations at nucleotide positions 3243, 3271, 8344, and 8993.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the reasons for attrition in a clinical laboratory technician-associate degree program, a retrospective study was done on classes entering from 1987 to 1992. Suggestions are made to increase retention.
SETTING: The medical laboratory department at the Community College of Philadelphia in Pennsylvania.
PRACTICE DESCRIPTION: There were 43,987 students enrolled for the 1993 to 1994 academic year; 17,846 full time equivalents at the college. Clinical laboratory technician students averaged 26.2 years and were 26% male and 74% female, which closely paralleled the college.

Respiratory chain deficiencies have long been regarded as neuromuscular diseases. In fact, oxidative phosphorylation, i.e., ATP synthesis by the respiratory chain not only occurs in the neuromuscular system, indeed, a number of non-neuromuscular organs and tissues are dependent upon mitochondrial energy supply. For this reason, a respiratory chain deficiency can theoretically give rise to any symptom, in any organ or tissue, at any age with any mode of inheritance, due to the twofold genetic origin of respiratory enzymes (nuclear DNA and mitochondrial DNA).

The clinical and laboratory features in 62 patients with acute pulmonary embolism were analized. There were 26 males, and 36 females with mean age of 63 +/- 11 (range 37 to 90). The clinical symptoms include: dyspnea (92%), chest pain and/or chest tightness (65%), cough (50%), wheezing (29%), leg swelling (32%), hemoptysis (24%), syncope (18%), leg pain (10%). Clinical effects of SY5555 dry syrup, a new oral penem antibiotic, were analysed in 20 children with various bacterial infections. Ages of the patients varied from 8 months to 14 years. Doses of SY5555 were varied from 12.8 mg/kg/day to 30.5 mg/kg/day, and it was administered in 3 divided dosages. Clinical efficacy rates were as follows; 6/7 in acute bronchitis, 5/5 in pharyngotonsillitis, 3/3 in acute otitis media and 2/2 in cystitis and 3/3 in impetigo contagiosa. Of 101 fertile women (15-50 years of age) consulting in general practice due to vaginal discharge and/or genital malodor, bacterial vaginosis was diagnosed in 34% and vaginal candidiasis in 23%. We report our experience with closure of the bladder during laparoscopic nephroureterectomy by using a gastrointestinal anastomosis type stapling device designed to deliver 6, 3 cm. rows of 3.5 mm. titanium staples via a 12 mm. trocar. We initially used this stapling device to secure a cuff of bladder in 8 female pigs undergoing laparoscopic nephroureterectomy. Followup in these animals was completed 2 to 6 months postoperatively.
