First laboratory-confirmed fatal dengue virus infection and its implications for national arboviral surveillance in Liberia.

INTRODUCTION: Dengue virus (DENV) is an emerging public health threat in Africa, where its impact is underestimated due to nonspecific clinical manifestations and restricted diagnostic capabilities. In Liberia, laboratory-confirmed cases of DENV were initially recorded in an urban febrile surveillance study (2018-2020), yet severe or fatal outcomes had not been previously reported. This paper reports the first laboratory-confirmed fatal dengue case and its implications for national surveillance and policy in Liberia. CASE REPORT: On February 2, 2026, a 38-year-old Liberian man arrived at J. J

Evaluating the antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory mechanisms of dexmedetomidine in managing bone infection: a laboratory perspective.

BACKGROUND: Osteomyelitis involves bone destruction, impaired bone formation, and systemic inflammation. Dexmedetomidine (DXMT) possesses antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anti-apoptotic properties alongside sedative and analgesic effects. This study evaluates DXMT's effects on markers of infection and bone healing using osteocyte-like cells infected by Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus). METHODS: Human osteosarcoma-derived SAOS-2 cells were differentiated to an osteocyte-like phenotype over 28 days using potassium dihydrogen phosphate. Differentiation was verified via qPCR for osteogenic ma

Laboratory-based molecular test alternatives to RT-PCR for the diagnosis of SARS-CoV-2 infection.

BACKGROUND: Diagnosing people with a SARS-CoV-2 infection played a critical role in managing the COVID-19 pandemic and remains a priority for the transition to long-term management of COVID-19. Initial shortages of extraction and reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) reagents impaired the desired upscaling of testing in many countries, which led to the search for alternatives to RNA extraction/purification and RT-PCR testing. Reference standard methods for diagnosing the presence of SARS-CoV-2 infection rely primarily on real-time reverse transcription-polymerase chain react

Laboratory parameters related to disease severity and physical performance after reconvalescence of acute COVID-19 infection.

Research into the molecular basis of disease trajectory and Long-COVID is important to get insights toward underlying pathophysiological processes. The objective of this study was to investigate inflammation-mediated changes of metabolism in patients with acute COVID-19 infection and throughout a one-year follow up period. The study enrolled 34 patients with moderate to severe COVID-19 infection admitted to the University Clinic of Innsbruck in early 2020. The dynamics of multiple laboratory parameters (including inflammatory markers [C-reactive protein (CRP), interleukin-6 (IL-6), neopterin]

Clinico-laboratory Profile and Outcomes of Megaloblastic Anemia presenting as Severe Pyrexial Illness mimicking Tropical Infection.

BACKGROUND: Anemia-causing fever has been described in patients with megaloblastic anemia. Although the exact mechanism of this is unknown, high-grade fever is relatively less reported. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This prospective observational study included all new cases of megaloblastic anemia presenting with febrile illness (>101°F) during a 3-year period. Patients with existing anemia, comorbidities, and other causes of macrocytosis were excluded. A detailed evaluation for megaloblastic anemia and workup for excluding tropical infections was done. The patients were treated with parenteral

Prevalence and incidence rates of laboratory-confirmed hepatitis B infection in South Africa, 2015 to 2019.

BACKGROUND: Hepatitis B virus (HBV), a global public health threat, is targeted for elimination by 2030. As national HBV prevalence and incidence is lacking for South Africa, our study aimed to provide such data in the public health sector. METHODS: We analysed laboratory-confirmed HBV data from 2015 to 2019 to determine annual prevalence and incidence rates of HBV infection per 100,000 population, HBsAg and anti-HBc IgM test positivity rates, and HBsAg and anti-HBc IgM testing rates per 100,000 population. Time trend and statistical analyses were performed on HBsAg and anti-HBc IgM test posi

Human Brucella canis Infection and Subsequent Laboratory Exposures Associated with a Puppy, New York City, 2012.

Human Brucella canis infection incidence is unknown. Most identified cases are associated with pet dogs. Laboratory-acquired infections can occur following contact with Brucella spp. We identified a paediatric B. canis case, the source and other exposed persons. A 3-year-old New York City child with fever and dyspnoea was hospitalized for 48 h for bronchiolitis. After her admission, blood culture grew B. canis, she was prescribed anti-microbials and recovered. B. canis was also isolated from blood of the child's pet dog; these isolates were genetically similar. The dog originated from an Iowa

[Infection studies in laboratory mice with erysipelas and coli bacteria after the administration of biotechnical substances].

Chlormadinone-acetate, human chorionic gonadotrophin, oestrophan, and zinc-metallibur, all of them substances used for biotechnological indications, were tested in generation experiments for their bearings on the immune status. The tests were applied to untreated descendants of biotechnologically treated mothers. Though the model animal experiments were continued through 6 generations of laboratory mice, no clue was obtained as to immunosuppressive action of any of the substances involved.
