Methyl-mercury (CH3Hg+) production was studied in freshwaters from lake Moreno, an ultraoligotrophic system belonging to Northern Patagonia. Hg2+ labelled with high specific activity 197Hg was spiked to water samples in concentrations of 10 ng l(-1), and incubated in laboratory for 3d time trends under different conditions. The impact of runoff from sulfuric soils in the heavily drained Cudgen Lake floodplain, eastern Australia on water quality and downstream coastal lake sediments has been examined. The oxidation of sulfidic soils and the transformation into sulfuric soils leads to changes not only in the upper soil profile but also affects drainage water quality and the chemistry of bottom sediments in receiving waters. The objective of this survey of primary care physicians in Salt Lake County, Utah, was to determine how many of these providers were prescribing anorexigenics (antiobesity drugs) and to evaluate their knowledge of side effects and drug interactions. In the summer of 1994, an outbreak of cryptosporidiosis occurred among visitors to a state park in New Jersey. We enrolled 185 persons in a cohort study, 38 (20.5%) of whom had laboratory-confirmed cryptosporidiosis or gastrointestinal illness that met our clinical case definition. Having any exposure to lake water (e.g., swimming) was strongly associated with illness (P < .001). The outbreak lasted 4 weeks and affected an estimated 2,070 persons. We conducted a prospective study of soccer injuries during the Soccer America Dawn to Dark Indoor Soccer Tournament, which was organized by the Lake Placid Soccer Center, Lake Placid, New York, 1993. A study of maternal health care and outcome of pregnancies in a rural area of Nigeria is presented. Over 80% of women sought maternal health care from the traditional midwives. The chance of survival of the child born was found to decrease with parity. In 95% of families child spacing was between 1-3 years. The peak incidence of multiple pregnancy occurred earlier and the rate was found lower than has been reported elsewhere. Hamilton Harbour is an impaired embayment of Lake Ontario that experiences seasonal algal blooms despite decades of remedial efforts.
